I have an original paint trunk lid from a brown '70 Formula - if my memory serves me, the sticker is in the recess nearest to the glass, on the other side of the trunk!!
(it's the trunk lid from the car that "donated" it's engine to me... and I'll be using the fenders from the same car)

I assume it's a Norwood build also? Another picture wouldn't hurt, when you get the chance.
We know from the Assembly Manual what Pontiacs intent was, but it appears that the line workers had minds of their own!

Interesting to note that the weight on the title (1973 - 2nd owner it appears) is 3536 lbs. vs. the AMA base Formula weight at 3571 lbs. Obviously shipped with less fuel in the tank (35 lbs.).

The dash bezel in my 1971 Formula doesn't have a bird emblem on it, and there are no holes to indicate it ever had one. I've never seen this before. I know that cars equipped with rally gauges and air conditioning didn't have the emblem, because there was nowhere to put it, but every other car I've seen had the bird emblem.

Eaglesan13,

Here's a picture of a '70 Formula 400 with AC (no gauges) with the bird in the dash over the fan control switch (proper location). I wonder if the dash panels were pre-punched for the emblem, but if gauges were ordered, that area was punched for the gauge instead.

Interesting that the '70 Firebird brochure shows the Firebird emblem in 3 different areas and not where the actual production location ended up being (above the fan switch).

Did '70 TA's (and later years) have the dash emblem too as shown in the brochure?

I seem to remember that on non-a/c '70 T/A's (and I believe non-a/c Formula's with gauges) having a mid-year change for the dash bezel birds location. I'll have to look for the thread but I think it started the year with the bird on the far right and at some point in the model year it moved towards the left above the lighter.

Here is the thread I was looking for, seems like it was decided that sometime in June '70 was the time it changed: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...91#post3993691

My '71 Formula non-A/C car with rally gauges had the bird emblem all the way to the right as in that first brochure you posted SD455DJ.

I know along the way I purchased a number of dash inserts and I specifically recall some that were non-A/C, non-rally cars with no emblem. I looked for those since I just cut them for 4 gauges anyway, that's how I remember.

Neat car Dennis, nice to see another one surface.

Bird emblem on the dash of my 70 Formula is all the way to the right, has rally gauges and no AC. Van Nuys 05D build.

Mine is just like the picture to the far right that you posted, original paint and decal still present, but mine is a Van Nuys car.

My car is a first week of June Norwood car;
The bird is on the far right.

I acquired a replacement dash insert for my car a couple years ago from a member here (the clear is lifting off my original) and it too has the bird on the far right.

When I went to look at my dash inserts to confirm the bird location, I may have stumbled upon an unexpected answer for these "no bird" dash inserts;
I have a 1972 dash insert which was for a non-AC & no-gauge car;
It was modified to work for a gauge car;
While looking at this, I also confirmed with another one of my dash inserts, that on a non-AC & no-gauge car, the bird is placed just about bang-on-centre were the far right gauge pod ring goes;
So, this 1972 dash insert I have appears to be setup for gauges, but has no holes for a dash bird.

Is it possible that this is why on occasion members were able to find dash insers with no holes to mount the dash bird?

EDIT:
It is also worth noting that the '73 Formula which my brother owns also has the bird on the far right.

Unruhjonny, HWYSTR455, & RicskGTO,

Thanks guys for the input...confusing and no consistency to say the least. I think the assembly manual illustration is correct showing the dash Bird emblem location right above the fan switch on the HVAC pod for a dash without gauges, and over the cigarette lighter on the TA without AC.

It'll remain a mystery why the Arrowhead emblem replaced the Bird emblem in our Formula...was it installed at the factory, or replaced later. The light bulbs were all the original ones that Dan had to replace (burned out) and nothing looked tampered with under or behind the dash...who knows!

/\ I'd wager that someone picked at or pulled on it, and broke it, or broke the locating stud - then the arrowhead was found as a cheap stand-in.

Jonnuy,

Could very well be. We are going to replace it with the proper bird (lol).

Dennis,

I picked up an NOS dash emblem a couple of months ago for $40.00, and I have seen others advertised for close to that price. I'm probably going to install it on my car, since I think it should have one.

Here are some pictures of a car that belongs to a friend of mine. I call it the "ultimate strippo" because there is only one option on the PHS, and that is the EVAP system, which was required on cars sold new in California. My friend bought this car out of a tow yard years ago and it's in very original condition. This is a base model with a straight six (Chevrolet) engine and a three-on-the-tree. No gauges and no a/c, but it has a bird emblem on the dash. (Sorry for the crappy pictures, but they were all I had).
