Default 1967 GTO Trunk torsion rods.

Anyone have any pictures on how the rods go into the hinges. I did a search and saw some but the area wasn't very clear. I also looked on line and got the same results. The shop manual also doesn't have a clear picture on how the get installed.

Default FWIW...

Here is the layout in a '66 This will apply to '67 as well.
The square end of the rods are slipped through the hinge and set into the hinge bracket before the tension is set.
You will need to use a support for the lid or have someone holding it up while this is done.
I set mine in at the lowest position and once both rods are in place then adjust the tension.

Images are from DS across to PS.
Note the rubber insulation sleave.

Hope this helps and makes sense.
Cheers

Thumbs up Adjusting tool.

The factory had a specific tool for Rod adjusting.
They also have a diagram to make your own, This is what we did.
Some have said they were able to do this with large channel locks,
But this tool is much safer and makes the task far easier

For what it's worth, although the tool for removal and installation would be really nice, it's not strictly necessary. I removed the torsion rods in my '66 using carefully placed vise grips, and installed them again without any tools other than my feet and some courage.

Do I recommend the tool? Yes! Is it necessary? No, especially if it's a one-time deal and you aren't doing body work professionally.

Default 1967 GTO Trunk torsion rods

I’ve done this a few times using Vice Grips, but got tired of the “clenched sphincter” effect it produced. Also got tired of how the Vice Grip jaws gnawed the paint off my freshly painted torsion rods. Bought a piece of 3/8(I think) bar stock, used the shop manual drawing to cut and fab the pieces, then had a friend weld it up for me. Slipped a piece of rubber hose over the handle and found that it works like a charm.
