Nice work on the bezels. I did a couple of mine with same results. My buddy's couldn't tell the difference. That feel nice when u fix something like that and get that kinda complement. Just some time and elbow grease. Keep up the good work.

We need more updates, Paul. I'm gonna rattle your cage until I see that car on the streets of Tucson.

Well Jim, here's one for you! I got my body filler today so I'm now ready to wet sand the POR15 this weekend and spray epoxy primer on it. Then I'm ready to fill the craters in the dash. Then, onto the body and interior floor.

Any rust / pitting should be sand blaster to remove before anything is applied . If not it will come back again .

Rust won't come through POR-15, I'm sure of that. Sand blasting makes a mess too, and hard to clean up after. Etching would probably be a better solution, but I'm not a body guy.

You have never used POR15 before, have you? This stuff is great. It loves being put over rust, as long as the loose scaly stuff is removed. I wired wheeled all the loose rust off. Then I applied the metal ready chemical they make, which etches the metal and leaves a zinc phosphate coating behind that the POR15 bonds to. Once this stuff is cured, you CANNOT remove it. It's there to stay and rust will never come back since it kills it dead. Plus POR15 is non-porous, so moisture will never get between it and the metal. You need to be sure all moisture is dried out first though. I used a heat gun for this. I POR15'nd my frame 15 years ago. No rust has come back through it. I have tried to scrape POR15 off with a razor blade before, and it just wasn't happening. It gets into the pores of the metal and latch's on. It's bad-ass stuff! It just fades in sunlight, so it needs to be top coated.

POR = Paint Over Rust
It was designed for submarines and ships, and is based on barnacle enzymes. Actually, it reacts to moisture, making it harder. You can hit it with a hammer and it won't come off. Same with skin, you get it on you, your skin has to wear off before it's gone. Which is why you don't want to spray it if you can avoid it, it can coat your lungs. Full respirator is needed. I did the 'bird in the early 80s. Still there. No rust. Could park that thing in the ocean and not worry about rust. .

I tested it also by coating a piece of 1/8" strap steel. After it cured, I measured it with a micrometer. It was .0015" thick on each side. I bent that strap into a "U" shape. It did not crack or try to chip or peel. I hammered it flat. Nothing. Still there. I pried it back apart with channel lock pliers, then hammered it flat again. Nowhere did that stuff try to come off. Even where the pliers left a dent in the steel, the POR15 did not break it's skin. This is amazing stuff IMO.
I got some on the oil pan rail of an engine I painted with their engine enamel. I coated the bare block with POR15, then coated that with the enamel. When I assembled the engine, I noticed I got some on the oil pan rail, both the black, and the red enamel. I used a razor blade to scrape it off. I scraped the red off the black. I could not scrape the black off. It was there to stay. As far as sand blasting goes, I tried that before. What a mess. I would find sand piles in my car for years after I got it running again. Every time I turned around, I was cleaning up another pile of sand. It's easier for stripping, but makes such a mess. No more.

Here is a pic of my car when I first bought it and brought it to it's present location in 1997. Just ran across it this morning.

That's what that is! I saw that but didn't even think about it being a fingerprint.

All the parts were just piled inside the car. There were no seats or interior stuff in it. Found a 64 LeMans I bought for $300 IIRC[CRS] that I pillaged interior, front fenders, A/C radiator core support, bumpers, and a few other odds and ends. Then I sold the LeMans to a friend[twooldgoats] who built a 64 GTO replica drag car out of it.

So you mention ac core support, is the 64 an ac car? If so do you plan on running the ac stuff?

My car was not an A/C car, nor will it be, but the core support had an opening and mounting for a taller radiator. I think it was 2" taller, or there about. I will need all the cooling I can get for the engine I build.

Well, I successfully sanded the POR15, and sprayed some epoxy primer over it, and the cowl area that still had remnants of past paint jobs, including the original Silvermist Gray, green, and black. The green looked like something you would paint a John Deere tractor! I will post some pics later. Right now I am waiting 1/2 hour to re-coat it. That will be another 10 minutes. Back soon.

Ok, here are some pics of it now, after spraying the epoxy primer. Gave it a couple of coats. Mixed up way too much. 2 cups. Needed about half that. I primed my rubber coated brackets for the doors, and all four tie rod ends, and centerlink, along with the tie rod end adjusting sleeves with some of what was left over. Think I got the hang of this spray gun. I have never used one before. First time for everything, right? I found an online manual on how to use it and clean it. It's a DeVilbiss. Had it for 25-30 years now. It looked brand new, until I got a hold of it. Getting practice for when I paint this thing. Tomorrow, maybe I can get some body filler in these pits.

Keep up the good work. Helps motivate some of us that have been sitting on projects for a long time. Bart |
