Default Window Handle / OEM vs Help comparison

I bought a set of four Help (Dorman) Chinese repop window handles and have compared them to a OEM handle from m 69 Firebird.

I purchased a set from Classic Industries. I believe they listed them as 1957-1981.They were made buy OER and looked like an exact re-pop.When i went to install them on my 81 T/A, with the custom door panels, they wouldn't fix without crushing the vinyl.
The angle at the base was wrong and the handle would rub against the door panel.
I never sent them back as at they time they were only 7 or 8 bucks each. Not worth the price of shipping. I contacted them about the fit and they suggested i try another p/n at three times the cost. I still have them,so i'll take a look and see how close they match your OEM's. I know thy look a lot better then the Dormans.

Great! I would to see some options. I bought these since they were $4 each and complete. They have the correct angle but as they are Chinese crap they do not look exactly correct but they do work for now.

Looking forward to seeing what you have.

The replacement ones I got for the 79 Camaor didn't fit. Couldn't copmpress the door panel enough to get the clip to lock in. The old butt ugly worm out sticky plastic stock ones popped on like a charm.

I had the same problem with a few repops recently on the clone, they wouldn't pop on all the way, and when they did, they were loose, and the teeth made only partial contact. They stripped off pretty quick. I think those were OER. Then I got some that were in a blue and white box, those too, stripped pretty quick. I ended up buying a bunch of the Help! ones and they worked good, still on the car.

Another thing I noticed was that the clips were different too, the ends were too long, and I initially tried to trim them. They made contact with the panel and didn't go past the panel into the hole. The wire clips were cheap, and more like a 'V'.

For my '63 G/P. I'd like to try to find a listing for the correct numbers of the Dorman HELP items that are mentioned previously. Seems their site & the local auto parts store don't have a listing.

Would anyone have some insight on that?

Thanks...

After using these cheapies for some time they work half way. Two of them work good and the other two want to strip and come loose. They look okay but the knobs come very loose and of course wobble when in use.

We do not have a "pick n pull" nearby so that leaves looking at eBay or catalog vendors for other sets. I am wary about buying the $35each items since they come with zero info and fuzzy pictures.

Any recommendations?

Yeah, the HELP! products ones are good, fit right, don't strip, knob is tight, correct clip, but obviously, they are not correct. They look pretty close though, I can't tell or care. The # 76912 is the one with the black knob, and should be readily available at parts stores.

Not sure if serious?

I was warned about using these but gave them try and now have paid the price. There are other repop's out there but they come in a variety of descriptions and prices. Anyone had success with a repop that isn't $120 or was able to find a set of originals somewhere?

The ones I have don't look like the pics you posted, fyi. The pics you posted look like the OER ones I got, the threads inside were too short and didn't make full contact, stripping out. Maybe I got some NOS HELP!/Doorman ones?

I still have some on the wall in the garage, want me to take a pic of the threads, etc? Mine are the black knob ones, not the clear ones. Maybe there's a difference.

Man if they work and are better yes I would love to have some pictures and ideas on where to get them. Thank you! I have swapped out the knobs before so I don't mind dong that at all. I have an old set of OE's from 12 years ago I can put onto any set of cranks.

ETA: In the picture that shows the Help! package the Dorman part number #76910 is correct according to their website.

yeah, the 76910 is the clear knob, the 12 is the black knob.

But, I stand corrected, the ones you posted are the same as the ones I have, and do fit a little loose. Not as bad as the OER ones or the 'white box' ones did, which strip, but still not tight.

I pulled some off the wall and opened one up, took pics (attached), and even went out to the A body and pulled one off the door to compare, they are the same. Sorry for the glimmer of hope, my memory isn't as good as it used to be.

Pot metal, yeah, but you would probably be cheaper to buy the $120 versions. Or convert to billet handles.

The NOS GM corvette ones are available, not too expensive. Can try that.

Shop it on eGay, see what you come up with. Maybe post on a chevy site and see what the chevelle/camaro guys say.

Goodmark makes the ones with clear knobs, maybe buy one of those and see what it looks like? Part number is 4012-421-691 ....

There is a thread over at www.nastyz28.com on this also. No good answers there.

I have the same problem with the repro handles i bought. They dont seem to stay on the shaft of the window regulator, even if they clip in with the retainer clip.
I just bought an NOS pair on ebay and bit the bullet ans paid $120.00. I hope these actually work and stay on.

Ames just announced they now repop 'correct' GM window handles, with both black and clear knobs available. Thought everyone would be glad to hear that!

Just called Ames and asked about them. No extra pictures or any description to help out. They only cited that there were no complaints about the product in their notes. So it will be a crap shoot to order them and check them out before we know.
