Default New LeMans addition in the Break Away Squad

I think I posted about this car a few months back but can't find the thread so I'll start a dedicated one. This car is an exceptional survivor with 100% original paint, interior, cordova top and driveline. Surprisingly the odometer reads 71k and there is a ton of documentation to confirm it but you'd swear it has 20k miles by how it drives and looks.

I'm second owner (not counting dealer who flipped it for OO. I suspect I overpaid but something about the condition was irresistible along with the unique red, white and blue color scheme.

A bit oddly optioned too, has typical (for southeast) AC, auto trans (TH400), 350 2bbl, power steering and power drums along with console, tilt and FM radio etc but a bit out of the ordinary is the blue top, rally wheels, Y96 suspension, rally gauges but no duals and it has the seat recliner.

First order of business was removing a bunch of day 2 vintage stuff like a glove box mounted 8 track, alarm, trailer hitch and vintage trailer brake kit etc. Luckily the OO was obsessive about not butchering things so the original radio and its two speakers were left untouched and the 8 track operated with a separate power supply and speakers (mounted under the dash and on the left side of the package shelf. The only thing that was butchered was the rear package mesh (it had a factory rear speaker on the other side). To save the original package tray cover I painted a factory rear speaker grille red just to fill the hole.

The OO had even bought an NOS glovebox insert to replace the one he had cut for the 8 track. It took a full day to get all the junk and wires out!

Car drives beautifully. I'm leaving it as is other than replacing the incorrect exhaust (just got the factory style single system from Waldron) and refreshing things like the car and service components. It drives like new. I'll do a bit of sneaky resto with NOS rocker 350 emblems and center caps . Amazingly for a cordova top car it has zero rust happening back there.

I love that car. I posted the auction link over here because I thought it was so exceptional with the options and colors, not to mention it's obvious originality. I still have the saved pics.

What a cream puff. I would love to see a pic of your garage. Must look like a Pontiac dealer straight out of 1969!

The OO was a mechanic at a Pontiac dealer when he bought the car. Interestingly he traded in a 69 Karman Ghia. When asked why he traded in a brand new car, he answered, “have you ever driven one?”

I think he was in his heart. The OO was a Vietnam war marine vet and even the keychain is a US flag. Found in the trunk a bunch of magazines from Patriotic orgs and veterans associations.

The color choice seems to have been intentional. Good for him, we need the likes of him more than ever today.

North, such a cool Lemans! Only thing that would make it better is if it had the 350HO ordered...still very cool though.

Yeah, odd he ordered the Y96 suspension (which got you the 1” GTO bar and the springs and shocks from the Ram Air GTO’s) and rally gauges but not even dual exhaust.

Always loved white w red interior . Always looks good .

Silver w red looks amazing , but only when the silver paint is in really good shape .

White just doesn’t fade doesn’t look bad til it’s damaged. The paint itself holds up very well.

Back in the early 80’s I remember going to a guy (can’t recall the name) who had a business near Pontiac Michigan. He was going to the southwest and bringing back GTO’s on autohaulers and selling them as rust free project cars or cutting them up to sell rust free sheet metal parts. They were basically from junk yards, the ones that got junked because of a major mechanical failure he’d sell as a car and the ones that got junked from a hit he’d cut up.

I went there to get a trunklid for a project I was working on but in his yard he had a 69 hardtop that I still can recall fondly 40 years later. It was palladium silver with a red interior, no vinyl top and optioned just right esthetically with hideaways, hoodtach, rally’s, power antenna and softray glass all around. It was all original with zero rust or hits but faded paint and interior. He wanted $500 and it didn’t run (probably timing gear failure). It was an AC 4 speed and had a lot of options. I could visualize it minty then and still can today. Wonder what happened to it? Never seen a 69 with that factory color combo since.

Silver, gold, red and black were the worst colors durability wise in the 60’s. White and Mayfair maize were the most durable.

I love your stable. I am guessing you were brought up in the same area as I was. Came down with bad case of COVID - so spacy today. I also have Canadian '69 2 + 2 Mine is a convertible as well as a project 10th Anniv T/A - 4 speed.
There are 2 companies selling the '69 nose piece - the outter cover in plastic or Fibreglas. Can you tell me which one is better? I just ordered the metal piece it attachs to. Alternatively I recieved a return email from a guy who had one, very much like the orginal, made, he did not remember who did it, he told me Jay Leno referred him to the guy.
Thank you for offering to assist.
