Default Pontiac returns to Daytona

Wonder how long it'd been since a Pontiac powered FGF turned a lap in anger there?

Had a blast running the high banks once I got used to them, a guy shot a bunch of pics and got a few of me.
I should get a CD of pics in a week or so from the official photographer, but these are pretty cool.

That's badass!

I would have liked to have been there to see you run.

Still the same old tired solid flat cam .030 over 400 with 65 cc KRE D ports. Milking it through the season.
I didn't re-gear for Daytona, needed to badly but it wasn't on the to-do list, ran out of gear way early on the back and Tri oval, good off the infield corners and Chicane though.

If I run it again next season I'll have a lot of changes done. I'll even lower the seat, can't see crap in Nascar 1-2, 3-4 isn't as bad, bigger steering wheel to slow the inputs down, gets real twitchy in the Tri-oval, add more gear, new engine, and bigger kahuna's...

Looks like a lot of fun. Your car is SLICK !!! I went to the Brickyard a few years ago with an Indy car club. Put my 1965 2+2 on the track, but was not allowed to go faster than 45 MPH. That was way to slow for me and the 2+2, but that was the rules. Would have loved to open it up. One guy tried and they removed him.

What was the race/event?
I worked for a local guy in Daytona that did road racing [24 Hours of Daytona] and other races at the track in a Shelby GT350 in the early 1980's.

What is the "Neutral Speed" for Daytona? (Speed where you can let go of the wheel and it will travel around the bowl without steering input? - Ford's 5 mile "Bowl" is 120 mph.

Tom V.

Glad you were having FUN!

This was a NASA motorsports event. Not sure they'll be back there next year or not, for a lot of people it was a bucket list track and some probably won't go back, expensive track to rent so projected car counts are critical.
Next season I'll be running more HSR events and they run there in November, so I'll get another crack at it.

I was selected and waited for hours to get on the track at Daytona in '99 for the East Coast Power Tour, but Chrysler came in and rented the track at the last min. Talk about disappointment.

Those are cool shots, ones you should frame and hang, even if the wife complains!

That is one sweet car!! Looks fast sitting still. What was your straight away speed? Did you draft much?
Its a thrill just running Daytona!!! The banking is so steep! I ran some there and it blew my mind.
Good luck. Enjoy.
Road racing is cool!!!!

Based on ratios it probably topped out at 135 with the 3.55. Needed more gear but didn't want to change it for one race. It's set up for more standard road courses like VIR and Road Atlanta.
If I go back next November I should have it changed by then. New engine should do more rpm, go with a 3.31 rear and 150 is attainable, also re-gear 1st-2nd in the tranny.

150 is fast enough for me, heading into the back straight chicane or coming off the tri-oval into T1 you don't realize how fast you're going it such a smooth track.
