A guideline for sure. But puts one buying used black plates 80% in the ballpark of what is seen or would have been applied most.

My 1964 had an "O" starting letter plate. My 1965's had P and R originally. My 1967 had T. My 1969 was an X issued plate.

I ordered a set of current personalized plates for the Goat, then ordered the same plate number in Black Plates from www.licenseplates.tv. The current DMV Plates were never mounted on the car.



I also used www.licenseplates.tv when I restored my Chrysler. It was an original CA car but it was missing the plates. I had an old Registration Card with the original plate number so I ordered a set and used them under the YOM program. The plates were sent to DMV per the program with no issues.

Finally got my plates. They aren't reflective, which is good, but the lack of the space between the first three characters and the last three looks weird.

All their promos implied they'd look the part with the SAM 123 sequencing. Oh well. As they say - good enough for government work.

(Ken) You would have to order a custom plate to be spaced accordingly. Thus the reason you got 6 digits sequential.

Although you could custom order plates with a space in there, you can not order with 3 letters, a space, and then 3 numbers like original - but could come close to that and look somewhat right.

Best to just get a nice set of original black plates and put them on your 63-69 car. These new plates are pretty ridiculous and honestly no need with so many used and available sets out there.

The YOM route in my opinion is easy too if you really want black plates:

everywhere and on everything. They look good on the black cars, seen a newer audi with one today.

I have the originals on my '64 GP. I wish the black plates were limited to classic cars, but I guess that is no longer the case.

I agree with Greg, and do hate seeing them on Prius, Teslas and Volts -- they are everywhere.

I'm waiting for DMV to send me the approval of my YOM plates. It has been a month since I've paid the fees. I relinquished my current plates and received a temporary (3 month) permit to operate the car.

How long does it typically take for DMV to send the approval?

I have had YOM plates approved in as little as 3 weeks... but then as long as 10 weeks.

I ordered my personalized Legacy plates online with explained definition, but was refused by DMV due to "the plate configuration has a sexual connotation, or is a term of lust or depravity". I assume that it was the "HO" in the character selection. As per their instructions in the letter of refusal, I sent a letter back with a copy of my original window sticker highlighting the exact wording of the plate and its meaning. They approved it after that.

There was a mistake with my application. DMV worker under charged me for the registration renewal and the YOM, so they kicked it back as an incomplete application after 7 weeks. Had to start the process over after paying $17 shortfall. I works have thought they would say ok, but you owe us this much, rather than starting over. It was such a trivial amount that it shouldn't have been an issue.
