Default Header choice

I dont have a large budget but I need new headers badly. I was thinking about these.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/he...rd?prefilter=1

They are the only header with a 1-3/4 primary I can find that cheap. Anyone running these? If so, how is the fit? Any reason I should stay away from them? I just cant figure out why they are half the price of everything else.
The car is an 81 TA 400 4spd 6X 4 heads, performer intake and mild cam. 3900 pounds ran mid 13s when I used to take it to the track.

Yes the tubes are thinner & the flang is thinner to. They will probrely fit but you'll have to do some slight mods to make them fit good. Remember you get what you pay for. If it's that much cheaper then something has to give way for it to be cheaper.

I really haven't had any success w/ the hedmans'. Some may recommend them. I've found that they need to be clearanced, etc. I've tried first-gen headmans only - have not tried the second gen's, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I've used Doug's roundport and dport in a 2nd gen and they fit great. I know they are $$. I've got a set of try-y's/tribal tunes that I've test fit (round port) - they fit as well or better and have more ground clearance. Ground clearance on the doug's are fine - just not as good as the tri-y's. I've used maddogs and they are nice headers - but I've not used them on a 2nd gen.

Good luck.

Thanks guys. Ill probably wind up giving them a shot due to the low cost. Just wanted to see if anyone had an awful experience with them before I ordered.

Default cheap?

i bought, sold & raced many sets of hedman headers--never any problems with fit. we used the 35270 on our early birds. the only problem was the super short collector. we always added 18" extentions 2 get the fumes past the driver--otherwise they'll get gassed. i see from the pics that the design has'nt changed a bit-- but the price sure has! best price i've found is over $250. i sold them for $69.95 & made a few bucks--i guess that really dates me! my worst header experience was hooker round port for a 69 goat--1 bolt was so hard 2 reach i had 2 grind down an open end wrench 2 turn it. that 1 bolt took longer than all the others combined. until i win the lottery i can't pay $600+ for dougs--but they look great for those who can buy em. haven't used any of the 3-tubes--so i have a ? about them--if your going to run a full street exhaust system on a mostly street driven car, how much power would actually be lost as compared 2 a decent 4-tube with the same system? are there actual dyno test results of this any of you guys can point me 2? thanks!

I can only speak for round port Hedmans in a second gen. The 1 3/4 tubes both sides hit the firewall BAD no way they would ever fit. Sent them back to Hedman-"fit's our jig you must have moved the engine back in the frame". I wanted that size for that motor so we cut off 2 tubes each side and made our own.We also straightend the angle of the collector out as it opinted uop at the floorboards.

Tried a set of theit 1 7/8 -collectors pointed at the tranny -they at least corrected that when I sent them back.

I've run a number of them on body 2nd gens and 68-72 A bodies. You do have to clearance them some, and I would usually cut the flange between #5 & #7. With the steering shaft there it's tough to get the back #5 bolt. Cut up a number of wrenches and bent some to make it easier. Also, like the Hookers, the passenger side hangs lower than the driver's side, no clue why. But overall, ok, better than other less expensive ones.

Hi-Po manifolds. Ya won't feel the diff in the seat of your pants.

Installing headers on a TA with a 4-speed (clutch linkage) not fun.

My 78 TA has 4 tube hedman, soon to be manifolds.

Noticed the same thing on my Hookers-definately lower on the passenger side.

I've recommended the 28150's numerous times and those who use them are satisfied with the fit and ground clearance.
The collectors are even spaced with no odd angles or mismatch.

Default Finally got them....UGH!

Ok, I finally got the headers and so far I have one fit issue. On the drivers side one tube makes contact with the rear lower control arm bushing mount. Im thinking I can do two things: one- tweak that tube over a little in the shop press, two- hit the mount with a grinder a little. Any suggestions??
I still have to check the other side, has anyone else had this tight of fit?

I went through 4 different sets of headers on my 73 GTO & finally went to the RA manifolds because none of the headers would fit without major adjustment to fit or cut & weld to fit. I can't tell the difference with or without the headers & my runs mid 11's .

My Doug's round port headers were the same way on the pass side, had the beat a $700 set of headers to fit. Not happy. But that's not too bad, I would BFH the header before grinding on the mount, that area could use a gusset in the first place.

Was looking at a Summit add and they have Eagle and Cragar headers for under $50. You can get a universal complete exhaust with headers for $122.50! Shame that was out of a 1980 issue of Car Craft...
