Default Clutch/Flywheel question

From what I've been reading I see that some Pontiacs came with a stepped flywheel. Say I was to buy a steel flywheel that accepts a 10.4 or 11" clutch and bought a stock LUK type clutch would this combo work? How or when does the stepped flywheel play a role here?

If the stepped section of the steel flywheel is 11 inches in diameter then you are good to go.

It should be that 11" minimum and then the 10.5" clutch disc will work on the larger diameter surface area wiithout any issues if you run a 10.5" pressure plate vs the 11 inch pressure plate with the 10.5" disc.

I have run a 11" steel flywheel with a LUK disc and Corvette 11" pressure plate for, years without issue on the street. I just bought some new pieces (Pressure plate and Disc) last year when a PY member was selling them. They will go back into the car when it warms up. Still cold in Michigan.

I didn't ask my question correctly. Are clutch kits different for a flat flywheel vs stepped?

In other words, say I ordered a luk clutch kit for 70 GTO and it originally had a stepped flywheel. Will the luk clutch kit be set up for a step flywheel and what happens if I bolt that up to a new flat steel flywheel??

Also, does anyone know if a 70 455 came with a stepped flywheel from the factory?

I've never seen a stepped flywheel on a Pontiac, I would have to say they weren't used, but not 100% sure.

For that matter, I don't think I've ever seen a stepped flywheel at all. Where is it stepped? I can't see a practical purpose for stepping it?

If you're buying a flywheel, just don't buy a stepped one, and problems avoided. Many are drilled for 10.5 & 11 pressure plates, so you can pretty much use what you want.

Is this stepped Flywheel a Chinese knock-off or is it a known part like a Hays or McLead Steel Part? I WILL NOT RUN a cast flywheel in my vehicle.

I came across this doing a search here on PY for clutches and flywheels. There isn't a lot of info on it and it's not clear which flywheels had the step but some did apparently. Here's one thread that I came across.

I've never seen a stepped flywheel from any 68-79 GM PASSENGER CAR V8, they may be out there although I've never seen one....I've changed many clutches and ground a lot of flywheels.

If your buying a flywheel, I would only buy a flat one, the step I would think would be a queer.... and limit your clutch choices.

FWIW

My 76 400 Formula came with a 11" clutch, no bolt holes for a 10.4", and it is not stepped.
