Where do people sell classic cars now?
I used to buy and sell cars on Ebay. But Ebay seems to be all dealers now. Where do regular people sell cars online? Pontiacs you can do here, but is there another clearinghouse with wider appeal?
thanks, Chris |

That’s a good question. Most all of the national marketplaces like autotrader,Hemings etc have been co opted by dealers.
Try local craigslist or Facebook marketplace ads.

carsonline.com Lots of private sellers there, I ignore the dealer ads.

Ebay still works well to get views. Most of the time the sale happens afterward.

Craigslist, eBay, Hemmings, Bring-A-Trailer, etc.

There tend to be local or regional auction venues like Barrett Jackson, but smaller. We just had one in town a couple months ago called Spring Grove Classic Car Auctions. But, they are located about 45 miles away. They sold over $2 in cars on a weekend. Mecum also comes to mind, as I've seen them at big car shows.

I search Craigslist for parts, and have found some great deals on stuff I needed, locally. But I notice most of the cars for sale are realistically WAY overpriced for their condition. Anything you post for sale generates LOTS of browsers, not buyers.
So where to list a car for sale, I can't say, have not seriously been in the market for a classic in years. Search for the car, or type you are listing and see what site gets the top billing from each search engine.(Google,Bing,Etc). ....Then add your local area to the search. Auctions. Unbeknownst to many casual collector car owners there are a lot more collector car auctions around this country besides B-J, Mecum, Russo & Steele, etc.

I own three classics. My Firebird I bought off this forum. My Galaxie I bought off The HAMB. And my Jeep was a family connection.
I would just put it up in multiple places. Local CL and Facebook marketplace. Forums. Etc.

Good friend of mine has bought and sold a number of classic vehicles on the Bring A Trailer site. He says the process is fair and the fees are not crazy. Seems like the listings are very detailed.

Facebook and Craig’s are nearly the same, full of D’bags. If you advertise on CL, state phones calls only, no text of email, that’s sorts out some tire kickers.
I think it depends what you are selling and the buyer you are aiming at. eBay is still a good place to advertise although not cheap, try eBay classified if you do t want to auction it.

Since 2013, I've bought two cars from eBay and one from Hemmings. On eBay, you can choose to browse cars from private owners only, but you are right in saying that the dealers have proliferated the website. Going to autotempest.com allows you to narrow down a lot of parameters and look at several websites; but those sites been mentioned above, and most of the cars for sale seem to come from craigslist.
