Default Dynomax super turbo necks down inside

Hey, just got a set of super turbo 17734 and when I look in them they neck down pretty significantly to before opening back up for the perforated tube. Was wondering is this is how they've always been. Looking for one of a Hand to chime in. Seems that it would impede flow pretty significantly. I'll add a couple pics but it's hard to tell from them.

Yeah those are the thin tin cases and as far as I know that style is like that. It's also not a direct shot on those offset mufflers. They are still known to flow pretty decent for what they are. What they do really well is control the noise level so if you want quiet with decent flow characteristics, I'd run it.

Personally I use their welded case mufflers. The offset mufflers are a direct shot from inlet to outlet, tube size stays the same, so obviously they will flow a little better, yet they still do a decent enough job to my ears at controlling noise with the perforated pipe and packing they use in the muffler. Even these in 3" versions behind more than 700hp provide comfortable cruising levels of sound that isn't even close to being too loud.

Yeah, because of the mesh tube, there's a low psi area there, so in a way it evens out when it comes to flow.

I also have a set of 17734s and noticed the reduction in size. I thought about it and reviewed the flow stats, then remembered something I've read here and on other forums, "Engineers do things for a reason." Why would they add an extra step during production if it was not needed?

Well, sometimes the 'reasons' could be production costs, and made the internals so they can be used across diff models of mufflers, like maybe to include 2" pipe sizing.

But I think they are still flowing pretty good, or some would have noticed and said something. Especially the guys who go to the track frequently.

I’m a retired HVAC-R tech. I remember having difficulty getting proper airflow to an area far from the air handler. The sheet metal contractor suggested reducing duct size then increasing it again. I was skeptical but agreed and it worked. He explained it creates a venturi effect, increasing velocity of flow.

I'd mostly be curious if they've been this way or if this is a recent change. If they've always been like this then fine because they reportedly flow very well. If it's a.recenr change and they don't flow as much anymore then that would suck.
