Yes, why?
You'll just be prone to getting Exh fumes in the car and the gas tank/ fuel will be getting a bunch hotter.

Even if your going to run 2 1/2" tail pipes those splitters will still not really be a restriction that far back since the Exh had cooled off a large amount!

74 up 2nd gens, need some kind of turn-downs to keep exhaust off rear bumper cover or lower valance.

I've seen what happens with stock length and location tail pipes with no splitter on the end. And it ain't pretty at all.

Got to have something back there

Your car, your choice.

My car? Absolutely not. I look at it as part of its persona.

Urethane bumpers, you NEED side exits, or it will cook the bumper.

If the exhaust doesn't exit from under the car? You will not only smell it, but long trips can be dangerous.

What side exits look good on 2nd gens? OE, hands down.

mercy no, keep em on. splitters are the Pontiac way.

I'm going to use splitters on my 72 . can't stand the straight out tailpipe. I am going to trim them on mine to show about half as the stock look does.

I installed a flow master American Thunder system with stainless straight exit tailpipes in my ‘75 TA back in the mid 90’s. Drove the car about 30k miles over the years. It never melted/burned the bumper. But definitely left black soot marks on it and the interior resonance was intolerable. About 6 mos ago I removed that system, And I plan go back to the original style with splitters.

Masserratti Splitters appear same as 70 GTO. I got re-inspired to put 70 Splitters on the 68

I love almost everything Pontiac but cant stand splitters. I vote take them off but its your car!! I have an NOS GM tailpipe with the splitter on it, been meaning to take to swap meet for years.

Run splitters or dump the exhaust before the rear axle. Anything else on splitter cars looks out of place.

I don't know who has the best price, but I can say the Walker Intermediate pipes, and tail pipes(splitters already on them) fit like a glove. Highly recommend them.

So all the Camaros from the same era were running around with melted rear bumpers?

Hmmm

If you look on E-bay you will see the 74 Camaro Z28 had a chrome bumper with rubber insert. Which is totally different than the Pontiac F body.

74-up camaros had aluminum bumpers. They were anodized. Even so, some later years with urethane bumpers hung ridiculously low below the rear of the quarters, or were turned down, because it would cook the bumpers if they were closer.

If you want a little twist away from 'factory correct', you can use the 72 GTO or other angled splitters, like the 64-65 GTOs. You can look at the ones over the years and pick one you like.

If you WANTED to, you could run extended length tail pipes that are angle cut, or even run the 70-74 tips, but you need to run them further out than originally on the 70-74 birds because you will cook the bumper covers.

If you don't believe me, try it.
