Who are you guys using to recast a stock steering wheel. I have gotten an estimate of 510 and that just seems a little high

For my clarification, places re-cast old steering wheels (for example the 1968 firebird deluxe wheel) using the original hard parts?
What are some of the names of these places? |

I used Koch's in California. It was about $500. They did a beautiful job with a lifetime guarantee.

I’m thinking your choices will be quite limited, I doubt more than one or two places even offer this service for ‘64 -‘65 deluxe steering wheels.
Hard to go wrong with Koch’s and they might quite possibly be your only choice. http://www.kochssteeringwheels.com/p.../mainIndex.asp

They did a fine job. Jaimie (pronounced hymey) is the guy you want to talk to if someone decides to deal with them.

There is a place in NC that will do it for 400 and they will cast it in your interior color. Not painted but actually cast in that color. Guess I’ll go with them.

D&D Automobilia Recast Information
I spoke to Dave the owner this morning about his steering wheel recasting. He seems to be a really knowledgeable nice guy. He spent 20 minutes explaining a lot of the aspects of wheel recasting.
He has steering wheel molds for most cars built between the 1930's through the late 60's. He does have molds for 1963 Tempest and the 1968 Firebird & LeMans. His process is to remove all of the original plastic from the wheel. He takes a non sun damaged inner core portion and smooths / polishes it so he can get the color for the new resin dialed in. Next, he bead blasts and powder coats the steel portion of the wheel. This is then placed in the mold and the resin cast. The remaining work is to sand with progressive finer grits of sand paper and eventually buff and polish until glass smooth. He is a single owner / operator so he's really busy with an approximate 6 month waiting list. He offers potential customers an option to send in a $400 refundable deposit to hold your name on the waiting list. At the appropriate time he would contact you and ask to have the wheel sent in. The turn around time is approximately one to two months. The cost estimate to recast / complete either the 63 LeMans wheel or the 68 Firebird / LeMans single color wheels were $1800 each. |

The guy in North Carolina still does them but I think the price is up to $1800 and a long lead time.

I have heard of the Swedish connection, the price seems intriguing.
Sent a wheel to a place called "Backwards Unlimited" in WA last Fall only to find out that they have no mold for my wheel. Nice. Thought we had clarified that on the phone??? They seem unwilling to return the wheel so it may prove to be more "expensive" than I had planned.
