Default rear disc conversion 2nd gen f-body

I'm considering different options for rear disc conversion on my 71 Bird. Does anyone know if these are any good on ebay?

For that money you can buy from a reputable source. Maybe take a look at Kore3....

Three issues with that setup:
1. No e-brake cables provided.
2. Setup uses Eldo calipers, which may interfer with shocks.
3. 71 'bird should have BOP axle, which is not a C-clip type, and you wil need to shim ou the bearing.

Default shimming the bearing

Ive read this several times but havent yet figured out what this means to shim the bearing. So do I just place shims in between the bearing and the bearing race inside the axle or is there an easier way like some have said they've used washers?
Thanks

My 71 has the original rear end and it is a 8.5" with C-clips.

I was looking at that ebay kit also for my '72 Formula. The seller is really nasty on the phone and in his feedbacks. He also hasn't sold one of these kits yet. Came close to a BIN before I started researching. I would shy away from him for this much money.

I have concluded that the Wilwood Dynalite 140-9315 is my choice if it's the right one for my '77 rearend. It's for 10/12 bolt with staggered shocks. also has built in parking brake.

yup, Verdean (who is building my shop) clued me in on this. Would have made sense for the F plants to carry only one axle type. Our stuff would run about 600 if you got the calipers, etc locally.

Arrow Alternative kit supplier...............

I installed a SSBC rear disc kit on my 72 TA clone, and everything fit well.

I opted to use a Lokar universal e/brake cable kit in place of the kit's poor cable extension piece, which is designed to wrap around the driver's side of the axle in order to enter the forward-mounted caliper.

I'm pretty sure my '71 has 8.2" non-C clip axle.

I will shy away from the mentioned Ebay setup. But now I'm considering a couple other options and I hope you guys can help me choose wisely. First off, I've been reading on the conversion using the 98+ GM S10/S15 rear disc brakes. It looks like these bolt right on with the correct axle flange and everything. The only real issues is it widens the rear stance 1/4" and the e-brake cable has to be custom. I don't think either of these cause a problem for me. I've called around and found all the parts (backing plates, calipers, rotors, e-brake cable) for $200 at a local salvage yard. I'd recondition and use most of it. I figure I'd need another $100-$200 to get it on the road. Good price but is it a good setup?

Another consideration is another board member has a '79 TA rear with disc and posi with 3.08 gears for $350 plus shipping. This would get me posi too, but I'd want to change gears. (I currently have 3.08 and want around 3.42 gears). Are the disc brakes from '79 good disc brakes? As good as the S10 rear disc brakes?

Which setup do you guys recommend?

If you can get the S-10 setup for that, I would go that way. The e-brake setup is excellent as long as you do not drive it with the e-brake engaged and smoke the lining.

I'm working on it right now. I'd get a '79 corvette disc/disc master cylinder and a '79 T/A disc/disc proportion valve. Still working on caliper part numbers. Here's what we need so far....

'98-'04 Blazer/S-10/S-15/Envoy rear disc conversion.......

Driver's side:
15064302 - Complete left kit.....from 4WD (backing plate, dust shield, caliper bracket, e-brake setup)

1 ea.- 4WD drivers side caliper

Passenger side:
15773309 - Complete right kit......from 2WD (backing plate, dust shield, caliper bracket, ebrake setup)

1 ea.- 2WD passenger side caliper

Pair of 2WD rotors and a set of pads

disc/disc master cylinder

disc/disc proportion valve

There was no 8.2 non c-clip in '71. I'm pretty sure you have an 8.5 corporate 10 bolt rearend. Why would you think that?

I think '79-81 discs are old school compared to the S-10 brakes. I also think you need to swap brake lines and everything that comes with the WS6 setup.

I was thinking the BOP axles were 8.2" bolt on axles...?

Thanks for the part #'s and such. I've read quite a bit on the S10 swap and I agree it does sound good. Here is a link to an article on HPP in case someone hasn't seen it. http://www.highperformancepontiac.co...kes/index.html

I found it would cost $600+ for the main parts with the kits you mention (backing plate kits, calipers, rotors) . I can get the main parts for 200 at the local yard.
The backing plates for 25 bucks a piece(left 4wd, right 2wd)
The callipers for 30 each, and they should just need a seal kit. Compared to $115 plus shipping online or $60 locally with $80 core charge.
I don't believe a disc/disc master cylinder is necessary. The stock MC should work as long as the proportioning valve is swapped out with Disc/disc or an adjustable one (see article).
I'm going to try and get all the parts this weekend. Two different local yards have the parts... keep my fingers crossed.

Here is a post from another guy that did it (Myckee) and posted some good info. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...=518454&page=3

I'm still leaning towards the Wilwood 140-9315 kit. I might go with the S-10 setup the GP J/428.

This is woody's '80 Z28 setup. '79 vette MC and Summit adj. valve. Is the gold thing connected to the prop. valve a residual valve? If it is, what is it's purpose?

If you use this knob style proporiton valve, what happens to the tan wire connected to the original proportion valve?
