Default Question pertaining to a 70 Judge Spoiler

I am in the process of having my 70 Judge repainted. In tracing the history of the car I found out that a reproduction spoiler was installed (purchased from Performance Years) in place of the original one that was in poor condition. Will the reproduction spoiler diminish the value of the Judge or its desirability?

Lastly, what is an acceptable price to pay for a good used original spoiler and/or an NOS spoiler? A used one is listed on Eaby for $900 and an NOS spoiler is listed at $1,380.

Thanks

Rich; Is it accurate that an Oshawa built 70 Judge had a one piece spoiler that was lighter and with three holes in the undrside as opposed to one?

Also that the Oshawa built car didn’t have / need the HD trunk rods because the spoiler was lighter?

It depends upon when in the year the car was built - there are two maybe three different versions of the spoiler - do a quick search and you will find the thread. I believe the one piece light weight spoiler was produced very early in the year - so if your car has a fall date it would be the correct one.

Found a couple for you....3 types? Light weight wide mount, light weight standard mount, heavy weight standard mount.

Pepper
I have seen a lot of Oshawa built Judges and have never seen that wing you describe.
This wing I have is off a parted out Oshawa Judge.

Cthaden; if possible I would put an original spoiler back on if it is a documented Judge.

Interesting… Thanks Boss & Rich. I looked at both 1970 spoilers that I have including a seamed and non-seamed piece. Mounting studs are the same measurements, about 10 ½ inches from the wing outside to the studs.

The original one piece spoiler with three drain holes I have is on a 10E Oshawa built Judge and is just over 13 lbs. The seamed spoiler with one drain hole is on another vehicle I have had for 30 plus years but not original to the car so I don’t know the production date. I did not take it off to weigh it.

Pepper Judge, thanks for the feedback. Thanks to all for good information. My Judge was built in September 1969 at the Arlington Plant. From the feedback I assume that the original spoiler was the first version (light weight) one piece. More than likely I would never be able to find an original used lightweight spoiler - early production run. If I purchase an original spoiler (heavier version - later production run - which is what I typically see for sale) would it be acceptable to install? Would there be issues with the heavier weight and the mounting location?

Boss, good threads.

cthaden. You first have to see which spoiler the car originally had, wide or std., both would have been the seamless lighter version. The wide mount version will be hard to find. The late '70-1 seamed version as you know is easier to find and will mount like the other std. mount version. Torsion rods may have to be moved a notch to work well. I have an NOS unit available for purchase, if you can pick up in person.

Ransom, thanks for the information. Do you know the measurement distance from the trunk end on the standard vs. wide mount version. I live quite a ways from you. Thanks for the offer.

Not really but if you look at Boss' first thread, it shows the approx. 3" from the sides for the wide mount holes and approx. 5" for the standard.

Thanks again to all – another question. My Judge which was built in September 1969. From the information provided the spoiler appears to have been built with a standard lightweight seamless spoiler. Would it be permissible to replace the aftermarket seamless spoiler with an original standard heavyweight seamed spoiler that was installed? Though the spoiler would be original it would not be original to the style that was first installed. The dilemma is that I doubt I could ever find an original standard lightweight seamless spoiler. In summary is an original spoiler regardless of the style better than an aftermarket spoiler that looks like the correct style?

My judge was also built Sept 69 arlington and I know of two others also built the same week as mine, third week. I haven't removed the spoiler yet but it has the seams on the bottom and the mounting moved to the inside. Although the trunk lid inner structure is punched for the outboard mounts (just not used).

I've also got a Sept. '69 Arlington Judge, and it's got the lightweight one piece spoiler with the narrower supports.

Boss, is the red trunk and the one before it the same? Looks like the spoiler would be mounted too far back.
