Old GTO with new GTO running gear...

I just got to thinking to myself today about how long it's going to take someone to drop enging/trans/suspension from the new Holden GTO into their origional goat. I've seen the 50s and 60s corvettes with new vette running gear and also old mustangs with new mustang stuff. Personally, I like having pontiac power in mine, but the t56 would be nice. Oh well, just an idea to ponder.

Putting a 455 in the Holden SS might prove difficult. if you want a t56 six speed, i saw in high perf. pontiac that McLeod is now making them to fit pontiac engines via an adapter plate. haven't had time to look at it yet, but you could check it out.

OK, here's my plan, I'm pulling the previously correctly restored OHC6 & 2 spd. out of my 1967 Red Tempest Ragtop and looking for the first totaled out 2004 model I can find to scavenge everything out of.

You don't need to find a wrecked GTO to do it. Just go on ebay and look for a LS1 out of any F-body or Corvette. Plenty to be had.

Or buy a $600 bare iron block from GM and fill it to make 400cid, LS6 heads and intake and you will have 475hp and you will be able to use the T56 with little issues.

It is very doable. More companies are makeing conversion kits to install those motors in GM A-bodies.

If I get impatient I might go ahead and get a Corvette motor, but I like the Idea of getting a hold of the latest Holden/GTO setup and using as much as possible, not some old hi-school kids clapped out Z-28. Maybe if I could find an SLP Firehawk.
I drove a 1965 GTO to Hi-school. My car is a "Tempest" it's supposed to handle better since it isn't as nose heavy.
I don't really care about being the fastest, I think an LS-1 will be plenty quick enough, and won't be plagued by the quirks of 35 year old technology.
I want tuned port injection and at least 4 different gears. And, I want A/C.

Oh yeah, I loved my 389, but it was pretty thirsty and the ones I've seen around in the last 10 years or so still have a lot of the same problems.

I like fuel injection, and painless wiring too. A Cruiser that looks like Old School.

Except for a 455, when was the last true "Pontiac V-8" built, or offered? You know you can fit just about anything you are willing to between the fenders of a '67.

Cadillac 500's and Northstars are cool too, but, I'll probably just be happy with an LS-1.

Anybody put a Northstar in one yet?

yeah, someone had posted that link claiming the first wrecked GTO, but further research showed that it was an Australian Monaro that a car thief wrecked at 150+ trying to outrun the cops! Bad mistake! Think the engine is any good?

Hey Ol Blue, go for it, and you might want to stroke it out to a 389 for the fun of it. I'm sure your tempest has the rare factory kanooter valve, so you might want to restore it and never drive it again, but if not take this idea and run with it, or any other original idea.

I think I remember seeing that crash on the news. If its the same one i'm thinking about, it was a stolen Monaro in western sydney somewhere where police were in pursuit of it and he just lost control.
