I'm Dan in Florida and have a 1965 Lemans convertible with a '69 400. I have a distributor (dist) problem. I'm replacing the HEI dist. with a new one. I set the timing mark at zero on the balancer. It was very hard to get the old dist. out. The rotor was pointing straight back. I tried to put the new dist in and couldn't. I tried to reinstall the old one and it wouldn't go back in either. It seems that the intermediate shaft lifted off the oil pump and is not sitting properly on the pump. The dist sits about a 1/4" up. I took the gear off the old dist and pulled the shaft out. The body sits properly, then I put the rotor shaft in and turned the rotor to get the intermediate shaft to the position I wanted it to be to have the rotor pointing in the right position when the new dist goes in but the new dist will not go completely in and seat properly. Is there a way to pull the old intermediate shaft out and put in a new one from the top? All responses will be welcome. Thanks
