Ok who is running a set of dual electric fans off of some junk yard car ???

Lincoln Mark 8 fans appear to b the highest oem cfm rating I have read about here and on other chevy sights.
Supposed to be in the 4000cfm range BUT they draw close to 30 amps. |

Windstar dual fans have a very high cfm flow and will package on most "A-Body" radiators with little mods. They also can be used on "F" body vehicles with some minor bracket work. Tom V. |
Dual 11"SPAL out of Italy are good too. No problems with them.

Been using Chrysler fans for a couple years now and love them. Matter of fact, word got out and now when I go to the local track I see them all over. I perfer the ones from V6 Sebrings,Intrepids etc(all late models,2002+). Kinda cool as one of the fans are 2 speed, very easy to mount and wire up Keeps my 462's cool no problem even cruising the beach in Florida in the summer months.

saab fans work well, too. i have one mounted in front of the radiator.

They are a double fan all in one shroud. The harness for them is also a 1 piece unit, and it doesn't use the balasts that so many do. They, like others listed, have incrdible amount of airflow. I choose the Chryslers as their v-6 run pretty hot and over the years there fans just kept getting more and more powerful, and the fans are in so many cars that they are pretty easy to find.

I have a dual fan set up off of a 97 LT1. Fits nicely on my stock 4 core rad. Another guy I know has the same fan setup on his 67 Camaro with a 454. Keeps it nice and cool for him. Hope it works as well for me.

Do you mean phsically locating them or wiring them up?
I wire them up with a themostat switch run through a relay.Can post a basic diagram for that if you need it. |
Wiring them up, I like what was posted looks like a good way to save on horsepower.Also would it be better to locate the fans in front or behind the radiator?

Mount them behind (the engine side) of the radiator. As for wiring them here is a basic relay diagram.Pretty easy to wire anything once you understand a basic relay.
I am just attaching what I made up for a couple of my friends so they would quit wiring everthing straight to there battery or fuse boxes. |
Thank you for sending the wiring diagram and location to put the fans, it will be another project that I can do to improve my car to make it a better daily driver when I get it on the road.

If you are going to the junkyard,look for the fan off a Buick grandnational..I use one on my race car and it works great...Good-luck

I just picked one up today from a '95 Chrysler New Yorker. Looks like the one in AndyR's second pic. I think it should mount fairly easily to my '68 Bird's radiator support. It's even equipped with a a 2-speed module. Bolt hole spacing is 28 1/4".......the same width as my radiator!!! http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

Just a note about the circuit thsat AndyR has shown. That is a Bosch relay that is rated at 30 amps. If you run two large fans, you will probably exceed 30 amps, so you would need separate relays or different relay capable of handling more current.
I tried twin 14" fans off a V8 Ford. They were 8 blade, 'S' shaped blades, & turned at 2300 rpm, pulled close to 40 amps. They did NOT cool as well as my trusty Pontiac Ram Air 7 blade flex fan, so they are now gathering dust! |
If you decide to go "new", check out the new Flex-a-lite "180" series. I just put one on my '67 Firebird. It works GREAT! I installed it in conjunction with a CSI electric water pump.
With both of those, my motor temperature has not gone over 178. Sitting at a traffic light, the temp stays right at 160 (thermostat setting). The fan comes with an adjustable relay/thermostat unit, and is also shrouded. It is rated at 3330cfm. Lee |

I'll try to remember to post some pics this evening, when I get home. I may have to work over today, so it may be tomorrow before I can do so.
The fan came with a nice selection of brackets. They are "universal", though, and not specific to any car. I was able to modify them without too much effort, to make them fit (IMHO) fairly neatly. |
MY dual electric fan install cause the Alternator to go nuclear...and ran for 10minutes after car was shut-off.
I use the GM flex, or now the Flex-A-Lite Stainless repro Mechanical fan. HIS |
To add to what Geoff said, I probably should have put that in there. Gm F-bodies especially, have a great relay on theirs. It is gray and oval shape and about 2 times the size of a Bosch and is rated alot higher than a standard ISO. I use them and no problems at all. (They were designed for a dual fan set up )

Use FORD or GM relays for best results.

Don't mean to hijack, but what amp alternator do you need if you want to run the dual fan setup? I think that mine is 94 amps (12SI).

That should be plenty of alternator for the car. Just remeber to use a good relay and keep the power wire from the battery is good sized and short as you can. Just don't use a harness feed for the relay.

Here is a pic that shows the CSI waterpump, the fan assembly, and the relocated alternator. Note that my car has manual steering (as God intended, for MEN's cars).
The top (driver's side) upper shroud bracket is stock, the left one I trimmed down. I've since trimmed both (and the lower ones) and neatened them up. There is another bracket that connects the long brackets to the shroud itself. If you look closely, you can see that I redrilled this other bracket's mounting holes. This moved it over enough to allow me to use the existing bolt mounts on the core support (I had to use bolts that were about 1/4" longer). Lee |

I finally got around to installing my '95 New Yorker fans on my 'Bird today. A little more work than I thought it would be. I had to do very minor trimming on the corners of the shroud to get it on the radiator nicely, and made some brackets that mount to the rad. support the same way that the radiator does.
I ran each fan on a seperate relay and switch so I can run them independently. I also used 2-way rocker switches - up is "on", middle is "off", and down will "on" and ran through a coolant temp. switch (temp switch will be installed later). Pics...... |

how do you get the fan on in front of radiator on non-engine side? I have no room on my 67 wagon as there is a tranny cooler there. Engine side has factory blade fan on the pulley. I guess i would have to ditch this and get new pulley bolts? If so what size?

Well I got me a fn from a Lincoln Mark XIII today, cost me 35 bucks and I got a few Ford relays, and a hand full of maxi fuses http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif
I measured the shroud when I got home and it was the perfect hight, but the length is short on both sides by about 3 inches per side. I suppose Im going to have to make some extra fan shroud to go on it to take up the extra 3 inches on each side of the radiator, anyone got a pic of some stuff they have done with the mark 8 fan?? Sporter?? didnt you use a mark 8 unit. Also the Newer Thunderbirds fans are identical the the Mark 8 fan, I think like 95-98 Tbirds just gota be sure its got the V8 in it, they had one of those at the yard also, If some one would like it i can pick up up for you and send it you pay purchase price and shipping, The guy said he would let it go for the same price as what I paid for the Lincoln fan. I wonder if someone could post how to wire a dual fan setup on 2 separate switches.... from soup to nuts. I dont wanna mess up anything. I dont get what kind of relays/harness should come with the fan and then what to wire where (to battery, to accessory position??). Sounds kind of dumb but this is something I would prefer detailed instructions on.

Geek I was wondering the same thing, Im going to be wiring through a temp switch with my fan, just gota get the temp switch, I dont wana have to flip a toggle switch to make it work.
You need to get a relay from a ford car of some type, go to the junk yard and look in the relay panel and get a few of the relays or go to auto zone and get a few standard bosche relays, I know that much just dont know how to wire them . Mike |

I'll go ahead and post it here too so everyone else can see. If you want to run on a temp. switch instead of a toggle, just run from terminal "F" on the relay to the temp. switch, then the other side of the temp. switch to ground. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif The fans I used are from a '95 NewYorker and they fit my stock 3-row radiator very well. They came with a 2-speed module/relay attached, and my first thought was to just wire it to use the module. No such luck, the module was bad and would not let the left fan work. So, I went to plan 2. I robbed some relays off a late 80's or early 90's Buick Century. They have a "bank" of relays behind the passenger's headlight fo the fuel pump, cooling fan, etc. Get the wiring connectors with at least 6" of wire and the mounting bracket also - they come in handy!! The relays can be mounted where the original module was. I can draw up a diagram if you need me to, but my artistic skills suck, so I'll try to describe the wiring. From the battery positive (B+) post, I ran a heavy gauge wire (10 or 12 ga) through a heavy duty 30 amp fuse holder, then split it to run to the "A" terminals on both relays. Then from the "E" terminals on the relays to the positive lead on the fans (if I remember right, it is blue on the driver's side, and tan on the passenger's side). Then simply run a heavy gauge wire from the ground leads on the fans (I spliced mine into one common wire near the fans, both black if I remember right) to the negative battery post. The fan "power" circuit is now complete, and the fans will run on full battery voltage anytime the relays are switched on. Now for the fan "control" circuit. This circuit will only carry about 1/2 amp of current, so small wires (18-20 ga.) are fine. From the fuse box "accessory" terminal, I ran a wire to the relays and split it to run to the "D" terminals on each relay. Then from the "F" terminals, I ran 2 seperate wires back inside the car to 2 seperate toggle switches. If you use simple one position switches, the wires from the relays go to one terminal, and the other terminal is connected to ground. Now if you have the key "on", and the switches "on", the control circuit will switch the relays on, which will power the fans. I don't think the fans are going to cool quite as good as it did with the factory shroud and a flex-fan. That's not a major concern of mine since my main goal here was to free up some HP for the track. The best part is the fact that the only things I had to buy were the toggle switches, some wire, and connectors. I have maybe $20 in the whole thing (I'm not going to mention how many hours, LOL). |

The only reason I ran 2 relays was to be able to control the fans seperately. Also if you use a different relay than I did, the terminal IDs will be different. I used the oval shaped GMs. You can see one in the first pic......below the fan motor.......about 7:00
