Official Pontiac Street Engine Combo Thread, Post your combo here!

I would like to start this thread and make it a 'sticky' so others can see what different combinations people are having success with. This will be a very useful archive to use for future reference for all PY members, your post won't disappear from the top of this page.

'Traditional' 1955 - 1981 Pontiac engines only please.

Aftermarket blocks, heads and cranks that fit the 'original' Pontiac V8 engines are also part of it, they're definitely still all 'trad' Pontiac pieces. The '66 -'69 Pontiac OHC-6 engines are welcome. No LSX, Chevy, Olds, or any other engines.

Please post the component combo of your running street engines only, not the combo you're now building or might build someday. The more details, the better.

If you've run your car down at your local dragstrip, we sure want to know what E.T. and MPH it ran. Let us know what kind of car the engine resides in and the car's weight if you know. We need to know what transmission, torque converter (if auto), rear end gears and rear tire size you're running if posting dragstrip results.

If you've had it on an engine or chassis dyno, please share the HP/TQ numbers or your dyno sheets.

Everyone has a different idea of what constitutes a 'true' street engine. Some folks drive their near-stock street engines hundreds of miles on road trips, other just rumble around town with their really wild street engine in a thinly-disguised race car. As long as you use your car on the street on a regular or semi-regular basis, we want to know all about the engine.

Post a picture of your engine if you can or of the car your engine lives in (one only full-size pic please), we would all like to see what your Pontiac engine looks like. Do not post pictures that are so large that we have to scroll back and forth to read the thread. Please reduce the size of your pictures, if you don't know how please ask in the 'Test & Tune' forum. Post all the thumbnails you want, you can download up to 5 of them in the current format. The whole point is to keep this thread easy to read. I will delete pictures that are too large (no larger than 640 X 480 pixels).:sorry:

Please help keep this thread 'clean', nothing other than your engine combo can be posted in this thread.

If you have questions, please send a Private Message to the engine's owner or start a new thread asking your question. You can link to the individual post you are referring to by clicking on the post # in the upper right hand corner of the post, then copy and paste the link that appears to put in your new thread.

This is a reference thread only, not a Q & A thread. It loses usefulness with a bunch of questions and answers mixed in. I will delete any posts by members who are not presenting their engine combo.

Please do your best to put up a quality post on your combo, spend a little time so others can benefit.

Step up and post your street engine combo, Pontiac fans! :clap2:

Great site idea B-Man.

http://www.pontiacstreetperformance....455jh2006.html

I added this link as it pops you into more details than you could ever hope to see in one place. Plus, I am a terrible typer and this way, you can see it all correctly organized. :):)
Every single "secret" is revealed in grand detail here too. :)

http://www.pontiacstreetperformance....455jh2006.html

I will also add a link to the car in action. No dyno numbers but some real strip numbers to share.

And here is one so those interested can see how truly quiet this street car is when it runs mid 11's. If you listen, you can tell by the low rpm it is geared rather mildy (3.31) And, since both 3" tailpipes come out this side, you can really tell how quiet Goerlich's large case 3" XLERATORS are, even on an engine this powerful.

My 462 runs on the cheapest fuel.....

1 Attachment(s)
My low-compression 455 street engine, built with 99% stock parts. It would be hard to build a milder (or cheaper) 455.

1973 455 block bored +.030 for 462 cubes, no decking or line bore/hone.

TRW forged pistons, matched to the weight of the original factory pistons/pins. Pistons at zero-deck (zero to -.005"), same as factory pistons.

Stock un-rebuilt cast rods  with original bolts, std./std. stock 455 cast crank, no balancing other than the factory balance job.

1971 #66 455 114cc heads (no porting/port matching or milling) converted to 7/16" straight screw-in studs, 8.2:1 compression.

Crane 068 'Blueprint' cam, installed straight-up with Cloyes Tru-Roller timing chain set. Stock stamped steel RAIV 1.65 rockers, polylock nuts, stock 5/16" pushrods, Edelbrock 5758 springs, stock retainers/keepers.

Melling M54DS oil pump (pickup retained with 10-32 bolt tapped and loctited), HO Racing hardened oil pump driveshaft, 1973 baffled oil pan with HO Racing trap-door mod for retaining oil pressure on hard right turns. Oil filter adapter bypass plugged with 3/8 pipe plug.

1966 Tri-Power, stock including jetting with K&N filters.

1967 HO repro exhaust manifolds, full 2-1/2" exhaust with 17749 20" long Walker Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers.

Stock points distributor/stock coil ignition, HO Racing curve kit

TH400 trans/13" Continental converter, original 2.56 geared 8.2" 10-bolt open rear, 235/45-17 (25.3" tall) street tires. 1964 Tempest weighing in at 3780# w/o driver.

Dragstrip results: 13.899 @ 101.85 MPH going through the traps in 2nd gear, shifting at 5000 RPM. This was the only run I could get in at the crowded track that day, but I was glad to come home with a 13-second timeslip. Couldn't launch it hard, otherwise no traction. Pitiful 2.3-second 60' times, the Tempest was built for cornering and highway flying (saw 140 MPH once).

An honest 335 HP at the flywheel, runs on 87 octane.:D

1968 #16 heads 2.11/1.77 milled 0.035 on the deck and intake side to get a true 72 cc chamber. Gasket matched to #1233's. I home ported my heads a little conservative, K&M machine estimated 240+ cfm INT and 185-190 EXH flow.(No flow sheets) Final compression came out at 9.44-1 UPDATE: Comp actually 9.70-1

Holley #4779-4 750 DP w/milled choke tower. Jets 72/80, towers .031/.035, PV front 6.5hg Rear plugged. Tuned the squirters with what ever cams it came with. (They are faded no way to tell)
"REGULAR" Performer intake w/separated water crossover gasket matched and blended to the #1233's. I use a cheap TransDapt adapter for the Holley carb which helps smooth the transition.

UPDATE: Hand filed casting flash in venturi's, contoured and radius airhorn, polished the venturi's and airhorn, knife edged the remaining seperation between the primaries/secondaries, rear jet extensions, BG slotted float, jetted 76/85, started using the 4 corner idle, 3.5 Hg PV,and changed to a port matched Torker II intake

HEI curved for 20 degrees mechanical and 16 Initial NO vacuum can. 36 total all in by 1800 rpm. 990 module, stock OEM coil, and Taylor 8.2mm ThunderVolt wires. UPDATE: locked mechanical @20 tune engine at 36 total

13 yr old Summit 4 tube headers. w/leaks lol 2.5" dual exhaust NO crossover w/Dynomax Super Turbo's. Dumps just PAST the rearend. UPDATE: swapped the Summit headers for a set of Hooker Competition w/ceramic coating, 2007 Plastic flex-fan and large two core aluminum radiator w/home made shroud.

TH350 Trans-go shift kit, Hughes GM25 converter, and either 3.70 or current 4.30 3rd members in a 9" rearend. W/ Comp Engineering bars and 50/50 oil filled shocks rear. Old rusty unknown shocks on the front.
BFG 275/60/15 DR's 28" tall UPDATE: Swapped out the Hughes converter to the "Redneck" 9.5", it footbrakes to 3200-3300 and flashes to 3600-3800, currently running the 4.30 spool setup

Car ran a best of 12.991 @106.54 mph w/1.940 60' w/3.70 gear
Car ran it's best 12.60 @104.78 mph w/ 1.864 60' w/4.30 gear
Car ran it's best 12.59 @107.29 mph w/ 1.869 60' w/4.30 gear
The only change I made from previous best was removed the filter element in my Fram canister fuel filter which validated a fuel volume delivery issue. Dropping .01 and getting + 2.51 MPH was great, especially for free!
Once I get a little more converter (Redneck "Tight" 3500) and upgrade my fuel system (-8 from cell to regulator) it should run low 12's! I need a better 60'!!! JD

P.S. ??? Unknown yet how the new combo will respond! Hopefully weather permitting I'll know by the middle of Nov.!

455 bracket race engine, now back on the street.....

3 Attachment(s)
Here are some specs on my mild 455 bracket engine. Now retired from racing, it will be driven on the street to local cruise nights and car shows. Hard-core race engine? Not even close.

1974 455 std. bore, pistons sitting at zero-deck (ranging from zero to -.005") from the factory. Original factory stock cast pistons / rings / rods / bolts / crank / bearings / balance job are all still intact, this short block is completely untouched.

Hard to find a good 455 like this, I paid $100 for the entire running engine and then harvested the shortblock.

I'm a thief. :D

1974 stock baffled oil pan, full-length stock windage tray, Mellings M54DS oil pump, HO Racing hardened oil pump driveshaft, stock oil filter adapter with the bypass plugged using a 3/8 pipe plug.

1971 #197 455 HO heads, pocket ported by a previous owner with a slight port clean-up, just enough to remove maybe half of the 'as cast' look inside the ports. The exhaust crossover is blocked off with an aluminum plate on the intake side, crossover passages are not filled. Milled .025", my guess is the stock 111cc chamber is now 105cc.

Compression ratio calculates (guestimates?) to 8.6:1 with a .040" crushed head gasket.

HO Racing HC-03 hydraulic cam and lifters (244/[email protected], 113 intake/120 exhaust LCA .550/.554" lift w/1.65 Erson stainless steel rollers). HO Racing 5/16" chome moly pushrods and VS-12 springs (1.71" installed height, spring seats cut) and stock retainers. Cam installed 4 degrees advanced using a Cloyes Tru-Roller 3-keyway timing set.

650 Holley double-pumper carb with stock jetting, only mod is a 50cc accelerator pump on the secondary side. Edelbrock Torker II intake with exhaust crossover removed and water crossover seperated, no porting/port matching or internal mods. Carb sits on a 1" open phenolic spacer. Stock 1974 aircleaner with a 2nd snorkel added, both are plumbed into the cowl for cool air.

Distributor is a stock single-point with no vacuum advance and the mechanical advance mechanism locked out (38 degrees advanced), fired by an Accel coil and an MSD-6A box. It will be replaced with a recurved stock single-point distributor with working vacuum and mechanical advance for street duty, the MSD-6A box will be retained.

HO Racing round-port Tri-Y headers (1-3/4" primary/2" secondary/2-1/2" collectors) dumping into a 3" home-made stainless steel exhaust with 3" #17547 (20" long case) Walker Dynomax Ultra-Flo Welded stainless steel mufflers, 3" tailpipes over the axle. There is no exhaust crossover of any kind on this system, it was built using all mandrel bends.

Drivetrain consists of a TH400 w/transbrake and reverse-pattern manual valve body, stock flexplate/10" Continental converter (3500 flash stall), Ford 9" rear w/3.89 gears & 31-spline Detroit Locker/stock Ford axles, 28X10 Goodyear slicks.

Best ET near sea level at Carlsbad Raceway on a warm August morning: 12.055 @ 110.29 MPH, 1.668 60' time. 1964 GTO 3550# race weight w/driver, a 5200 RPM shift point keeps the rods inside the block and produces the best ET.

This low-compression 455 makes an honest 400 HP, runs on 91 octane.

Same engine, updated a little for 2008 with a '71 455 HO intake and '77 800cfm Q-jet carb (big thanks to Cliff Ruggles) topped off with a '70 GTO twin-snorkel aircleaner. A recurved stock points distributor with vacuum advance (big thanks to Rocky Rotella) replaces the old locked points distributor. A new Rodney Red aluminum radiator with a '66-'67 upper hose location now takes on the cooling chores.

Cheap 400 build for 87 octane.....

Here's a low-compression 400 that I put together on the cheap.

I started with a 1969 400 engine that came standard in the Grand Prix that year, this one had around 90K miles on it. This one suffered the same fate as many others with the factory nylon upper timing chain sprocket. The teeth came off the sprocket and the next thing that happened was the valves started hitting the pistons, bending nearly all the pushrods. Beside maybe a couple of slightly bent valves, the rest of the engine was in great shape.

1969 400 block, still std. bore as the cylinders had almost no wear ridge, this engine must have had some decent care during its life. I reused the original pistons and put some new std. iron rings on them. Pistons sit about .020" down in the hole like most factory 400 engines of that era. The original rods were reused with new std. bearings, they checked out good. Same thing with the original 400 crank, new std. bearings installed and factory balance job retained.

1976 factory baffled oil pan with HO Racing trap door mod to retain oil pressure on hard right turns. Melling M54DS oil pump, pickup retained with a 10-32 screw through the pump housing and tube and loctited in place, HO Racing hardened oil pump driveshaft. Stock filter adapter with bypass blocked off using a 3/8 pipe plug.

1976 6X-4 350 92-94cc heads, no milling or porting/port matching. Rocker studs were replaced with 7/16" big-block Chevy studs and stock Chevy self-locking crimp nuts were used to set the valves. Stock valve springs were reused as well as the retainers and keepers. 1976 valve covers with the drippers were used to help keep the rockers lubed.

Compression works out to 8.2:1, I put the original #62 high-compression heads off to the side.

Edelbrock Performer cam (204/214 @ .050, .420"/.442", same as Summit 2800 cam) was used with stock 1.5 stamped rockers and stock pushrods. Cloyes Tru-Roller timing chain, cam installed straight-up.

1972 factory iron Q-jet intake and a 1972 455 750 Q-jet were used, the exhaust crossover was not blocked off. Topped off with a stock 1970 GTO twin-snorkel aircleaner.

Stock log exhaust manifolds with the outlet ID opened up from 1.900" to 2.100" to match up to the ID of the 2-1/4" headpipes. Full 2-1/2" mandrel-bent exhaust with H-crossover, Walker Dynomax 17749 20" long Super Turbo mufflers.

TH400 trans with Trans-Go shift kit and stock converter, stock 3.23 open rear and 235/75-15 (28" tall) whitewall radials. Engine resides in a 1969 Grand Prix, weighing 4100# w/o driver.

Best ET 15.11 @ 92.7 MPH, launching fairly easy to keep traction. Not bad for low-compression 400 running nearly all stock pieces, easily a high-14s car with any decent traction tire. I was getting 13 MPG with this car running at 80 MPH on the freeway with the A/C blowing ice.

An honest 270 HP 400 built strictly for commuting, runs hard on 87 octane.

Overkill for a street car that will probably never see the dragstrip again? Maybe it is, but it sure will be fun for the next few decades! I really do need to get the posi installed as the biggest problem is wheelspin! I just barely (and I mean barely!) get into the outside carbs and it's all wheelspin at most surface street speeds.

Here's a link to some pictures of the build.

Only had the car out to track once. 12.80 @109. No tuning or tweaking. Was having some clutch/launching issues which have since been sorted out. Can't wait to try it again. Thinking if I can get out the hole at full power and power shift, she might be down into low 12s. I'm hoping.

Great to see what others are running

My 400 has been a pretty good combo and took years of abuse. My best all motor pass was 12.50. This setup consistently ran anywhere from 12.6 to 12.9 depending on heat, humidity, and motor temp. The cars best 60’ time is 1.64 but I’ve been unable to duplicate that and it usually runs anywhere from mid 1.7’s to 1.9 range. I need to work on this area. This motor liked to rev to 6000 rpm. The car is a ’69 Firebird 400 and race weight is 3800 pounds.

Engine Modifications:
'69 400 2 bolt block bored .030
Deck height set to zero
#62 Iron heads, minor bowl blend – milled about .015 - no flow numbers.
Stock 10/10 crank
Eagle H-beam rods with ARP fasteners
Forged TRW pistons
Crower 60211 cam/lifter set
Crower 1.6:1 roller rockers
Mallory Hyfire IV
Mallory Mechanical magnetic distributor
Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake, top 1” milled out of plenum divider
825 CFM Mighty Demon

Transmission:
’69 Muncie has been upgraded with Super Case, Iron Mid plate, M22 wide ratio gears
McLeod SFI Aluminum Flywheel
11” clutch

Rearend:
Dana 60 with 4.10 gears and 35 spline Strange axles and Aerospace disc brakes

Suspension
Multi-leaf rear springs
QA-1 Drag Race coil over shocks/springs up front
CE adjustable drag shocks in back
1 1/8” sway bar up front
Cal-trac’s

A new configuration is in progress and the changes are:

Motor bored .030 – dingle berry hone to remove glaze (bores are good)
#62 Iron heads – owner ported using Jim Hand method and Pete McArthy video.
275 / 188 cfm @ 500 lift on intake / exhaust, respectively
New Manley valves
Probe SRS Pistons with Mahle rings
* Converting to Solid flat tappet cam – not selected yet

I’ll post final configuration changes and results once I get them.

Took car to San Antonio Raceway last year, ran 17's, hence the new 400 was called for. Broke cam in this afternoon, ran around for about hour today.........think I can kiss 17's goodbye ;-).

My car is a driver first, take to track couple times a year. Last November, drove my car from Corpus Christi, to SAR for racing, 300 mile roundtrip, then following weekend, drove it to Houston 400 mile roundtrip, and was entrant in Autorama, got Honorable Mention, was pretty cool.

Look forward to going back to SAR and posting some "lower times" Kelly

Here's the engine that was previously in my gto

http://turboninjas.com/gallery/d/13348-1/engine.JPG

Block: '77 400 bored .30 over 2 bolt mains with ARP studs
TRW forged pistons
Speed-pro moly rings
Stock rods, ARP bolts
Stock crank, .020/.020 under
fully balanced assembly
high volume oil pump
homemade crank scraper
Heads: '67 670's bone stock
stock rockers
crane dual valve springs
Cam/lifters: Summit 2802 224/234 @.050 .465/.488 lift 114 LSA
dynomax headers (didn't fit the gto very well)
3" full exhaust
Summit fully welded mufflers
HEI with accel supercoil, taylor wires
MSD 6al
milodon water pump
MT covers
Performer RPM intake
Holley 750 vac. secondaries

With the timing dialed in, it ran good on super unleaded. Tough, rowdy sounding idle, but very streetable. Strong idle with plenty of vacuum, lots of low-end torque and it really started to scream above 2500.

I never ran this engine at the dragstrip... but I can say it was a very fun street engine in my 4 speed 67 GTO with 4.10 rear gears. My guess is it would be capable of somewhere in the 14's or maybe 13's in the quarter.
