The same old question... how much hp do you think...?

462cid
11.0:1
Cam = @ 0.050 244/256 and 0.510/0.540
E-heads (out of the box)
RPM manifold (out of the box)
800cfm Q-jet w/appropriate mods per Cliff's book
Headers = 2.00 x 3.5
X-pipe 3in exh.
4-spd

What's your best guess for flywheel and at the rear wheels? It should be put together here in the next month or so and I will post what it really turned out to be.

Thanks,

ponjohn 08-11-2007 12:09 PM

No idea about Net HP but I would guess 500hp/535tque gross.

What camshaft is that?

John

Ron H 08-11-2007 12:38 PM

Solid or hyd flat tappet cam? 1.5 ratio rockers?
Rear gear and tires? Upgraded your driveshaft?
72 cc chamber heads? Should net around 11.8 to 1. 85cc would be around 10.4 to 1 with a 0 deck.
Stock water pump, power steering, AC?

slowbird 08-11-2007 01:09 PM

Why so little lift?

Ooops...:o
  • Solid lifter
  • 2.73 rear gears and 17" rim and if I remember right the tire hight is 25" (rims and tires seen below)
  • Stock rear and drive line
  • 1.5 rockers
  • 72cc heads (I was taking a guess at the compression so if you say 11.8 I believe you:D)
  • Stock water pump and power steering is the only acc.
Thanks,

Don't know, I didn't pick it. The cam was suggested to me by someone that's into Pontiac's and knows more than I do so I believe them. The cam card isn't in front of me so we will just say that I remembered it correctly.:D It's a #10.;)

No one else wants to guess?

mchell 08-12-2007 06:50 PM

I will guess that your gonna spatter 4 gear parts all over the pavement as soon as you fire that puppy up!.........seriously?...I wouldn't put a sticky tire under it........whats with the 2.73 cogs? is it going to be some kind of road racing machine?........with 12 to 1, eheads and a good cam you should have no problem making 500 hp....

LOL! As far as the tranny goes it worked just fine with the old combo and it was 475-500hp and I'm sure the torque with this cam will be about the same, well over 500ftlbs that is. I don't run the thing on the drag strip and I'm not one to go around dropping the clutch but I do floor it for sure. With the old cam (Crower # 60243) it would well over 150mph. On paper it should do 170mph at 6,000rpm but I can't say I'll try that though.:D

It's intended to be a "Pro-Touring" car I guess. There was no name for them when me and my buddies started dreaming about a car like this back in 1984 when my friend Chris bought it (this car) from the second owner. All we knew was that it wouldn't bury the 160mph speedo and that was just flat WRONG! We were 19yrs old at the time and invincible.:D At the time it would run out about 140mph at 6,000rpm. Back in 1993 the was given to me by my other friend Kevin who had bought it in the mean time. He got it in 1986 and it spun the rod bearings in it so it sat from 1986 until 2004 when I finally got the money to start on it. I intend to put a 5-spd in it as soon as I get the cash. For now it's just a matter of getting it as close as I can to what I want and still drive it in the mean time.

uneasyrider 08-19-2007 10:03 AM

No other guesses? I thought it would be fun to see what you guys guess and then we will see what the dyno (picture below) will say. It's not a real big deal to me what it make because I'm sure it will be more than enough to get me in trouble. :D

:ranger: 517hp @ 6,000rpm's and 525tq @ 4500rpm's give or take a point. uncap those headers and it will jump up to 546Hp and 539tq, by the way, 400 going into my formula tomorrow with all kinds of upgrades, looks so beautiful on the engine stand, i should be at 305hp and 398tq, not bad for a hair lip :p

Not sure why there are so few guesses on this one, most of the time everyone and their dog jumps in to make a guess.

517hp is about what my DynoSim told me also so that will be my guess too. So as a rough guess with a manual tranny that should be about 444hp at the rear wheels.

That's cool that you got the engine going into the bird. I can't wait to see it on the road!:drive:

Anyone else?

That would be nice. :D

Thanks for the input and that's a nice TA you have in your Avatar,

Any projections on how the car (in picture below) would perform 0-60, 1/4 mile, and top speed if it doesn't break as predicted above?

1974 TA
4-spd (original)
2.73 final drive
25in dia tire (seen below)

Dan Linebarger 11-02-2007 11:12 PM

I would guess with all the hp, torque and highway gearing that 170 mph is where you are headed.

That's what I was guessing. Not sure if I will do it but the hole idea is COOL! lol :D

b-man 11-03-2007 03:06 PM

One thing I'd seriously consider would be to lower the front suspension by at least by a couple of inches.

Any top-speeed runs above 120 MPH would be a lot less hairy if the front end were down lower.

Lowering it some would keep it from plowing through the air and reduce any tendancy to lift the front of the car at speed.

Dan Linebarger 11-03-2007 04:47 PM

lower front

I don't think my car will run much above 120 with the 4:11 rear end.
But, lowering the front end a bit makes sense.
I changed the original Endura front end for fiberglass. The original needed a lot of work from a botched repair due to an old front end accident.
Later, I changed the original heads to alluminum and the cast intake for an alluminum RA-IV.
I don't know the total weight reduction with these three change outs, but it is significant.
My car now clearly sets higher in the front than before.

Good point, it's always looked like sat a little higher in the front than in the rear and I don't think the E-heads and Al intake made that any better. I don't want to get it to low either because I drive it on back roads that tend to be a bit bumpy and I don't want it bottoming out either. I've got a stock replacement shock on it right now and I'm going to upgrade to a set of gas shocks so that might give me a bit of a buffer if I lower the car. Before I ever really get the thing up to speed I have to upgrade the breaks to 4wd too. I've had it to 156 before but that is faster than the present configuration should be run at. About 140 is as fast as I should run it now and it's a bit spooky at those speed at that. Like you said at about 120 is where it starts to feel a bit light. The way it sets right now 120 is "cruising" speed for the engine. I need to live in Montana or Wyoming! lol:D What the ultimate plan is to put a 5-spd and 3.55's in it. It will be about the same top speed but wont be such a pain in the ass around town. It's capable of doing 70 in first at 6,000rpm but that makes it a pain to drive at low speed and actually puts it far enough down on the cam that at 70 it's really lugging down to far. I think I'm turning about 2,100 at 70 in 4th. I should run it in 3rd at that speed it feels like.

When is the dyno? My guess is 410 at the wheels. -Jim

Unfortunately I don't think it will be on the road now before spring. 410hp at the wheels would be cool!

uneasyrider 11-17-2007 06:57 AM

The engine is together now so it wont be a real long time before it's on the dyno... I hope. With the Canton pan on there it looks "Road Racy". :D

ModifiedPONPON 11-17-2007 08:13 PM

sweet! thats good news. cant wait to see her back on the road where it belongs:D

When he gets it back together we are going to do a run on the dyno for peak hp and top speed.

uneasyrider 12-02-2007 09:52 AM

Well it will soon be setting on the dyno shown below. I'll do a hp run and a top speed run. My buddy got it running a couple days ago and it sounds WICKED. The "Big Guy" did me right on the #10 cam I can tell. I'll have to send him the dyno sheet. :D The carb was tuned to Cliff's specs and works fine out of the box other than it's a little fat on the idle circuit (nothing major at all) and the throttle reponse is PERFECT!!! It's like glass smooth, like fuel injection! The guy that rebuilt it did it from Cliff's book so there is my plug for the book. Now it's a matter of some fine tuning but the carb works fantastic on the over all! Thanks Cliff for publishing the info.
