Pete McCarthy 476hp 400 article
this was published in HPP in the early 90's. could someone e-mail me a copy?
thanks, bob |
I have it but I know I could never find it. Call Pete or Jane if nobody can produce it. The # is on his website.
|
I have it, I am scanning it in as we speak. Post your email and I will send it to you.
Mark |
Me too, please [email protected]
|
|
isn't it the same as the one from SD performance that was in Car Craft ?
|
Hmmm,I checked my article collection, did'nt find it,dont seem to recall the article that well either...
All the Pete M. 400 cid articles I have are higher hp builds. Anybody care to post the relevant specs for discussion? I cant expect 65gto69 to send everybody a copy of the article. Maybe post the scans for those interested in this topic. :noidea: |

No mention of Pete M. in the CC article either... |
Good idea but it is too big. The article is 3 pages and in order to have good clarity I scanned them in at 150 dpi 8-bit grayscale, file size is 6 megs or 4.5 megs in pdf format.
If I can post it I will, but I don't know how clear it will be if I take it down a lesser amount. Thanks, Mark P.S. The article is in the April 1992 issue, under "Indian Head" I just tried lowering the scan dpi and the article is still clear, so I will post each page separately. |
that's the one I remember, ok

Works for pics too. Usually ends up taking a couple of posts to get a whole article posted though. I could probably do it if need be. Email: [email protected] |

Page 1, 2 & 3. I know it is in a microsoft word DOC file but it is the only thin I could use to get the file size down to 300k. If you can't read a DOC file let me know and I will send it to you via email Mark [email protected] |

Goat, I have the mag. Remind me to bring it next time we get together-GET the goat ready, I want to go to the strip! First 5 gallons of race gas is on me.

Great article!
Note the serious increase in power with the Torker II over the performer manifold. Also note the increase in power with the Holley 850 compared to the Q-jet! A very well written article and a great test of the mighty 400. Just imagine what that 400 could do with a set of 300 CFM heads, good rods, a stout solid roller, and a good single plane manifold. |
Quote:
If I remember right this motor went on to get an offset ground 400 crank, 6.800 rods, roller valvetrain, Warrior intake,1150 and the 670 heads were around the 279 cfm range. It ended up in the Verdoro Firebird that Joel Larkin now runs in Super Stock. I haven't heard where the motor ended up but it did run well. |
Only 400cubes and a Hydraulic cam and it really liked the 1 7/8" stepped headers. And people still think 2" headers are "Overkill" for 455plus engines?!!
PHILLYGOAT |
Another jab at Cliff I see!!
|
I used the 246/253 duration cam in my 455 way back when.
That was an awesome grind. Went 12.01 time after time. Heres a quick breakdown: Car weighed 3750 at the time. 455 .030 TRWs. No 13 heads, unported.Just a valve job. Stock T-2 intake. Holley 850. 1.75 Heddman headers. Comp Roller tip rockers. Torque Tech 3" exhaust with tailpipes. Generic TCI 3500 conveter. 3.89 gears. Cam was also advanced 4 degrees. Gave alot of Mustangs the whooping;as that cam was very streetable.I drove that thing everywhere. Mark. |
that's a deal twister!!! who's buying the beer??? smitty???

My 400 is loosely based on that article except I used 7" ali rods ,a T1 inlet,2" headers and a bit more compression, whether my porting is up to Pete Mcarthy's standard I can't say,but it has run 10.1@137mph in a new car, should run easy 9.80's this year. Oh yeah,my cam was the Crane equivalent.

Thanks for posting

Just my 2 cents worth and a question
First of all, "Who is Pete McCarthy?" Well maybe I should have asked this question more like this. I have heard the name on and off for a while and decided to find out who he is or was. I found that his name is out there but there isn't really anything with it. Just like this Thread. It starts out as if it Pete built something yet did he? So I started to research who Pete was. I did find that he raced a GTO but could never get it under its index and wrote an editorial blaming the NHRA??? Who picked the combination??? Oh well, that is what I found. I saw that he has a book out there, and haven't seen it in person. If the above is all there is about Pete (and most of what I have found in the Magazines are always someone else’s ideas in his words or that is the way that it appears) I would feel much better reading something from somebody else..but that is just an opinion from a Gear Head Cop that went to one to many statement analysis and interview interrogation schools.
 |
You might want to do a bit more research, because right now you're just spinning your wheels. :)
Pete McCarthy's book "Pontiac Musclecar Performance, 1955-1979" was kind of the bible of Pontiac engine parts for several years before we started seeing all the aftermarket choices we have now. He certainly contributed greatly to my knowledge of (and enthusiasm for) Pontiacs. |
ignorance is bliss if only you could fathom how big a dumb ass you just made your junior member self look like in the pontiac community you would hide your head in shame!you want to find out who pete mccarthy is BUY and READ his books!
|
well as someone that does not know who Pete is some of the info you found on the all mighty intrernets, it may come across as you describ but Pete never clamed to know everything but he has done and put in print some of the most important information on Pontiac engines to date and ALWAYS gave credit where credit was due and this may be the very thing that make it look as if Pete is not an accomplished pioneer of the modern Pontiac era and if it wasn't for his wrightings we may not have what we have now.
|
I just ask a question. No I not a dumb ass....
Quote:
By the way, it isn't to late for you to do some research on your own. Might even save you some personal embarrassment, especially before you call someone that you do not know, A Dumb Ass..... Out to "mzbk21" I seems that the more information that I dig up the less I find. The more I read the dumber I become. I may be spinninmywheels but at least I am spinnin. I am not taking away any truth to his book, matter of fact, I said I have never seen it in person. I only know that I can not find that much on the person except that that in XXX amount of years he only walked away with one lone trophy. I like drag racing and as I stated I would rather listen to someone who walks that walk every day. Take for instance, JB over in Leoma, Tn. At least they build something. I am not trying to run anybody down, I just ask a legit question and I get attacked. If someone could or would show me proof I would be more than happy to retract my few tidbits that I have placed upon this site................. Now I don't mean ( Dude said it so it must be true ) I want proof. In my years I have found it very interesting at the amount of people that lash out instead of putting on any articulable facts that would alter the outcome of any situation. Instead they ramble and rave and never accomplish anything. And out to "pro-tour 79" Thank you for your input. Your actually took the time to address an issue. That may very well be a legit reason. Thank you for your kindness. As far as the almighty internet...it may not be the bible but you can find some interesting things on here if you know where to look. :) Have a nice Day:) |
spinnin, I agree with your assessment as it was addressed to me. My first line was meant as light-hearted jest, since your name lent itself so nicely to the line.
Also, I don't know the general opinion on this board of Pete, so I went easy in stating my own opinion of him. When his book was first shown to me, it was a real eye-opener. I spent many weekends traipsing through junkyards looking for some of the elusive parts shown in the book. In the years since the books was published there have been very few corrections to the data Pete first put together, which stands as a testament to the research he did before publishing. I was merely pointing out that he is held in high regard by many, at least for his knowledge of Pontiacs. |
one trophy:stupid: thats a hoot im still laughing!:D
|
I am not taking any thing away either
Quote:
As far as holding someone in high regards, that is great, If I knew more I might myself. As far as this goes, I can only find that people will attribute mountains of monuments in others names without the first ioda of proof. Just looking for the proof. Thanks Martin |
OK big boy prove me wrong.......
Quote:
Don't worry, I am not really gonna hold my breath. You like so many may be laughing, but tis I that is laughing on the inside. Any NHRA titles????? Wow.... Lets go find John Angeles and see what he has to say about the almighty Pete. Be careful at how much you laugh... you might choke... Still waiting...............:hail: |
From his website at http://www.petemccarthy.com/: "Pete McCarthy, 42-year veteran NHRA Stock and Super Stock driver, builder and tuner, has studied Pontiacs since 1962. "
(Warning - his website plays a cheezy electronic version of "Little GTO", so turn down the volume before you go there. :) ) |
Sounds like spinninmywheels is, in realilty, Bruce Fulper. What...got no balls to use your real name Bruce??
|
typical cop......
|
Pete McCarthy was very involved with and contributed many good technical articles within early volumes of Pontiac Enthusiast magazine. One good series spread over many editions in 1994 was titled "Sciencing Out the Pontiac Engine". Good stuff, well worth the read. This was only one of his many series on various subjects involving Pontiac. And his early development with port work on Pontiac iron heads is legendary.
|
No, wrong again Ron...
Quote:
This site amazes me. I was once told not to argue with idiots because they will only drag you down. No, I am not Bruce Fulper. I am not Jim Butler. I am not Jim Hand. I am not Mark Kauffman. I am someone that ask a simple question and can't get a straight answer from you either. And instead of wanting to see my balls how about helping the rest of the gang answer the question. Answer it correctly with facts and I will gladly sit down, but the more that you and the rest of you ramble, rant, and rave the more that you prove my point. And to you "goatasaurus rex" No, I am not the typical cop and have no intention of being the typical cop. Once again you as many other would rather just run someone down instead of looking for the truth. I know no one on this forum yet due to a question that I have asked you think you know me.......You are wrong again.. If you come out through Chattannooga Tn let me know. We can talk Pontiacs all you want. Heck, bring whatever you have and lets line them up. A day at the strip would be great. Not trying to cause a problem, Just asked a simple qusestion.....................:fencing: |
Sounds like you've got a thick skin, at least. That's certainly useful when dealing with some of the clowns around here.
Stick around.... it gets better. :) |
Thank you Steve

I can't understand what the big deal is. If more people on the Forum were as you things would end up so much better. I will look back through my old Mag. pile and reread some of the things that I may have overlooked in the past. I will never claim to be anything more than a gearhead looking to go fast. :usa2: |
Not thick skin its Dupont Kevlar...

Mine weren't hurt at all, and I didn't feel defensive. Obviously some here aren't on such an even keel, so they jumped down your throat. Not a very warm welcome to the forum, but most of us are glad you're here, anyway. :)
|
It is great that we now have several great Pontiac performance shops around the country; Bulter Performance, KRE, PPR, SD Performace, Spotts Performance, Ken's Speed and Machine Shop, AllPontiac, BOP Engineering, Wenzler Performance and I am sure their are a few I am forgetting. But it is important for us not to forget the people that did not let the Pontiac Performance candle blow out during the lean years of the seventies and eighties; Pete McCarthy, Nunzi, H&O Racing. If it wasn't for these people that were building, racing and keeping the history alive, we would proable not have the aftermarket options we have today.

Spinnin, who are showing just how little you know. Most of the people on this forum are aware that NRHA wins for a true Pontiac in Stock and Superstock are few and far between. It is very hard to build a competive car and stay within the strict rules of the NHRA especially in an off make like a Pontiac. You are limited in the amount of engine work that can be done and what engine combos the NHRA recognizes. You can't just stick RA 4 heads on a 455 block and go racing in these classes. Not to metion if you start win a lot and/or are going well under the class index, The NHRA will either refactor your car or the the whole class. Why do you think Pete complained to the NHRA, once he got his car competive the NHRA refactored it, which means you have find some more power to get get it back in competive form. Not easy to do in a strict rules class. In superstock the only National event winners I can think for the past 15 years in a true Pontiac powered car are Art Peterson and Bruce Fullper and in stock Tebor Kadar, who by the way was runner up in points in the 2006 NHRA season. There might be a few others Don Kennedy, Joel Larkin, Keri Angeles but I do not know if they have won any races.

Thanks for the insight
I have not claimed to be a know it all and all I wanted was for someone to explain something to me. You have done a great job of just that. I am still not showing anyone how little that I know because I first ask the question.....I was the one who was attacked for my question and when I pointed out inconsistances, no one came back with anything except the same old bla bla bla:drum: . I understand exactly what you are talking about. Trust me, I have been a poncho fan for a long time. As far as keeping candles lit, maybe he did, maybe he wrote down a lot of items made popular by others and got credit for it. Who cares, it's just funny to me........

yeah, you are typical. all issues turn into a goat rope. do you have anything to run? come on up to ubly dragway i will be glad to take your money. better bring your A game.
|
Wow, bring my A game and all..
Quote:
It would appear that in fact you, my friend, are the typical one. No goat rope here. I may question something but you will never hear me call someone out unless I have the facts to back it up. I ask a question and wow, instant "my Daddy is bigger than your Daddy". Who cares! Tell someone to bring their ride to the track and they think they are gonna take your $$$$. You might (11.66???) , you might not. We race for fun, always have and always will. You are the reason that these forum sights are nothing more than the new bathroom wall of slander and crap. If I am wrong about something, please point it out to me. If it is an oversite I will gladly fix it. If you are not poised enough to carry on a general conversation like adults why even bother.......:focus: |
While I disagree with your "Bathroom wall" comment, the board is what the members make of it. The vast majority of our members are here to share their interest in Pontiac's.
It is, however, a red flag when a new member jumps right in and throws his spoon in the pot working up the emotion of other members. If you honestly feel PY is a bathroom wall then please find another stall to crap in, if you can be a productive member then by all means stick around and have fun. |

:fish: Irony,,,I recognize that... What's so mature about your methods amigo??? You jump in the sandbox and start kicking sand in all the kids faces and expect them to thank you for the privilege of eating sand,,,I dont think so... Just because your the type of fella who apparently feels that if he's not personally aware of another fellas accomplishments or contributions, that they simply cannot possibly be valid yet, well sorry but that's just not a very realistic way to view the world if you ask me. If you honestly wanted to know more about Pete M. and were not intent on starting $#!t with the members of the forum here, why the hell did you not post a new thread here and ask us that question outright, instead of digging this thread up and coming off like a bull in a china shop with your comments and attitude. Why $#!t on someone else's thread??? Lemme use some LEO lingo, you should understand this next comment, your M/O would seem to give away your intent in this thread. You came here to start $#!t by being the one to take this thread off topic to begin with, and you continue to stir the $#!t with your continued contributions to taking this thread off topic, and likely you'll end up getting this thread locked in the end with this sorta dreck. This thread was'nt about Pete McCarthy at all, this thread was about a specific engine build he had published in a magazine a while back, the discussion in this thread was about that article, and other various articles he had written on pontiac engine builds. This thread was NOT about the man himself, nor his personal worth to the pontiac hobby,or his personal accomplishments. You my fellow member are the one who's been off topic with your personal issue(s) regarding Pete M. here, what they are based off of I cant fathom,I dont worship the guy myself either,I dont worship anybody in this deal really, they're all just car guys doing their own thing, maybe they share some info with others, maybe they dont,no big deal to me either way IMO. But I also recognize that the books (plural=2 books) I have of his are among the more useful books I own about pontiacs. You seem to think some guys are straight shooters just because they take a little time to bend your ear and tell you a thing or two, well often that's exactly why those guys do that when folks let them, they do so to gain your trust without really earning it,not with their actions nor thru their reputation amongst others. That's where the con in con-man comes from, confidence,a con-man has to exude it to gain it from others, once he gains the marks confidence,he can pretty much convince the mark of almost anything, that is one of the oldest tricks in the book. :-ohwell: Good luck in your pontiac endeavours. |
