Went to the track tonight....

Well we finally got the car together and got to the track tonight. It's only an 1/8th mile track and its up on the mountain so the air is terrible but the times were pretty good. We had some issues associated with the vacuum advance on the distributor so we ended up unhooking it and running only mechanical advance and 38 degrees total timing. My combination is a 455 .30 over, xe 274 cam, 062 heads with good valves and springs and gasket matched with no port work. Torker 1 intake, 750 carter competition series carb, th400 with a 10" continental converter and 3.73 rear gears with a 28x9 hoosier slicks. The first three passes with the car falling on its face were 8.30-8.40 passes with 1.80 short times. After fixing the timing issue the car totally came to life. The converter just plain WORKED also! Thanks Cliff for working with continental and getting me just what I needed. The next pass the car went 7.74 with a 1.61 sixty foot with the left front tire up in the air pretty good and followed it with a 7.62 with a 1.59 sixty as the air cooled down. All and all I am very pleased with how my ol unported cast iron headed motor runs. Hopefully we are VMP bound in a Pontiac Powered BUICK WAGON....and maybe tomorrow night I will get the video of the last pass posted..

hal101 04-17-2010 06:56 AM

cool sounds like it is running good

nice runs with a EX 274 cam , what do you shift at ? good job and have fun .

You are welcome! Great 60' times for the combination of parts, quicker than my own car, best I've managed to date is 1.61. Let us know how it runs in the 1/4 mile? I see potential for high 11's with some good air......Cliff

johnta1 04-17-2010 09:05 AM

Congrats on the ET's.

Sounds like you have a good combo.

:)

66bonne 04-17-2010 09:40 AM

Those are some great times for your combo, very impressive. I really like those 60footer times. Good job. Iron block, iron heads - that's sweet.

tc 04-17-2010 09:57 AM

Wow. How do you and other's car's run so good. I know someone with a 455, xe284, unported d-ports, ran a 7.48 in the 1/8 mile. My car has run 7.63, and that is with a 1.73 60 ft. Guess I need to do more work. Some of your of parts are certainly not recommended on this board. Great job, hope it goes quicker. Looking forward to the video.

ponjohn 04-17-2010 10:02 AM

Nice runs for sure.

What is the weight?
What gear?

grandville455 04-17-2010 10:11 AM

Yes Excellent times!.. what size stall conv?

71 Ventura II 04-17-2010 10:16 AM

Now you see why "Wagons" have the hook advantage from the weight transfer! Your last run calculates +- 11.96 in the 1/4. I'm surprised to see it took 38 total timing though, most combo's similar to yours generally like 32-36 degrees. But every combo is unique. Congrats!!! JD

I set of unported 225CFM D-Ports can make 1 horsepower to cubic inch on a 455ci. That can push a 3600lb car into the 11's.

7.60 what with a 1 what sixty foot, using a comp xe 274 cam, and a old ##s torker 1, psha I say psha and bah hum bug to! And stock heads, my god man don't you realize the possible repurcushions of such actions! That performance w those parts goes against the actual thread of the fiber that's holds the entire Pontiac community together! Oh wait a minute I see you actually used the community specific torque converter! So never mind the torque converter is why your so fast! Ok good job! But watch your parts selection in future young man we run a tight ship around and deviating from the community plan is fround upon! Hahahaha lol! I'm in a good mood today just joking around guys! And that is excellent performance and thanks for sharing

we will need pics of that :D

rtanner 04-17-2010 12:09 PM

Oh I almost forgot, and that car better have a quadrajet on it!

Mikes455Wagon 04-17-2010 12:40 PM

Thanks everyone, I am very pleased with the combination. I stalled it at about 2800 seemed to be where it left the hardest and the converter is a 10". Any more than that you will have to ask Cliff because converters are still somewhat of a mystery to me. When i get back to my windows based desktop I will put the video up even though my dad seems to need some video camera training but its still a decent clip. I was shifting the car at 5300 and that seems to be where it went the fastest. The timing we are going to play with a little more once we get to VMP. Probably wont be competitive there bracket racing because we don't have much time on the car at all, about 10 passes, the first 3 broke the th350, and the last 7 last night on the new 400. The motor still has the break in oil in it at this point and not much run time so as the rings seat in it might pick up a little more.

grandville455 04-17-2010 12:44 PM

wow that has to be a pretty loose convertor!..i think my own conti. will start pushing the car around 2500? i will see tom. i know it will go to 2000, u must have the 4200 conti? mine is a 3200 restalled to 3800 suppose to be anyway. What does car weigh? Either way looking forward to vids!.. and great performance with a xe 274 wow!

Mikes455Wagon 04-17-2010 01:56 PM

The car weighs about 3500 lbs with me in it. The car got stripped and In some ways it got lighter but then as stuff like a roll bar and box steel cross member got added along with the 9" rear the weight came back. At about 2900-3000 the car wants to do more than the brakes will hold. With the xe 274 cam I have a torque monster more than likely in the amount of cubes I have. When I get back over the hill to my house from the parents I will try to get the video up. Like I said earlier, dad is a better engine builder than camera man. Guess I will have to take mom next time to operate the critical camera....:)

ta man 04-17-2010 02:23 PM

Wow 3500lbs .. that is a sleeper for a wagon.Those heads are they 062's or 62's.

Mikes455Wagon 04-17-2010 02:33 PM

62s from a 69 428. The motor has a stock crank, Cat Rods, and speed pro forged pistons that are flat tops so I am running a good amount of compression. The cranking compression numbers were around 220 and some of that is probably thanks to the baby camshaft i am running.

68hotbird 04-17-2010 09:15 PM

Old school can still be fast

Looks like dad and little brother are doing well with good old pontiac engineered parts and a little modern day cam and converter. Who says you need a qudrajet or holley. That old carter AFB seems to be doing ok.

Cliff R 04-18-2010 07:30 AM

Nice video. You are coming up a bit too hard on the converter, making it difficult to hold the car in the lights. Experiment with different launch rpm's, until you are able to get the R/T's where you want them.

The car will run equally as hard from leaving off idle or building up the converter. It may even run quicker as it will allow the vehicle to transfer weight when it "hits" the stall speed. I usually stage around 1100-1200rpm's for most tracks, staging shallow and leaving on the last yellow. On "soft" tracks I may come up to 1700-1800rpm's so it moves out a tad quicker. Runs exactly the same everyplace otherwise, looks more impressive leaving off idle as I can lift the front higher, but R/T's are all over the place.

For drag racing only, the carburetor just has to act like a big toilette, and get your engine thru transition, then deliver an acceptable A/F ratio for the rest of the run. There is little if any ET or MPH improvment swapping around carburetors, provided the ones you are using have sufficient CFM and are tuned pretty close for the application.

One of our customers just ran a Q-jet that he prepared himself against a very expensive Eagle Claw that he's been dialing in for many years, and the Q-jet runs EXACTLY the same everyplace, but it took him quite a while to get it tuned correctly......Cliff

ponjohn 04-18-2010 07:50 AM

I experienced the same thing, no performance gains (footbraking) in leaving at idle or 1500 etc.

No factory D-Ports flow 225 cfm Stock. A set of "slightly warmed over" D-Ports can flow in the 240 cfm range (Jim Butler sold the things for years advertising that the heads would flow better than a stock RA-IV head, which they would). Butler's cast iron head porter was a master at doing those head ports exactly the same, over and over, year after year.

I agree totally that a 225 cfm head can make one hp to cubic inch on a 455 engine.

Congrats.

What you can't see in the video is that I am actually bumping the car into the stage light on the converter and its holding the car there fine. That is just a thing I have always done. Stall the car in the top bulb and bump into the bottom. The car did its best 60 foot stalled at about 2800 and dropped off anywhere below there for some reason. I tried it off idle, 1500, 2000, 2200, 2500, then the last pass which was the fastest I piled drived it in at 2800. My reaction times I really was not too worried about this time around because the car just needed to make it from the starting line to the finish line. We will worry about driver adjustment on the light next time out since the car is acting right. Hopefully we will get some more runs to play with it at dinwiddie in a couple weeks :D

69Goat1 04-18-2010 12:52 PM

I am glad to hear that you have had good success with the XE 274 cam... It is making very good power for shifting only at 5300 RPM... I am curious - does the car have a transbrake or are you guys stalling it against the footbrake?

Mikes455Wagon 04-18-2010 01:21 PM

That was leaving off the footbrake. We kicked around the idea of running a transbrake when dad built the transmission but we would have to run super pro against cars with delay boxes down here. Up north I guess you can run a transbrake in footbrake off of a button but thats a no no in this part of the world. For what it matters when the video loads up if you go to my videos I uploaded a better quality version of the same pass just got my software to cooperate with me a little more....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSlJYxYRf2I

Cliff R 04-18-2010 04:08 PM

"The car did its best 60 foot stalled at about 2800 and dropped off anywhere below there for some reason."

If you are using an AFB or AFB clone, that doesn't surprise me. You should be able to run equally as fast right off idle, or around 1100-1200rpm's.

"I am glad to hear that you have had good success with the XE 274 cam... It is making very good power for shifting only at 5300 RPM"

I didn't get a plug when my daily driver at 3860 lbs with cleaned up 6X heads and Crower RAIV camshaft went 7.64 @ 89mph shifting at 5000rpm's. Less converter, less gear, more weight, lower shift rpm, and we were running a factory iron intake with a 1977 smog era Pontiac q-jet sitting on it.....LOL.....Cliff

69Goat1, just pointing out facts, and I forgot the part we were running DOT tires then, not slicks. Just making sure folks are well informed, and showing once again that the XE flat hydraulic cams don't cure cancer or make our cars leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Seriously, I'm glad to see one worked OK once again, but it is not doing any better anyplace than a 30 year old outdated RAIV cam would have or could have done with less lift and "obsolete" lobe profiles.

BTW, I weigh my car every year at Norwalk on the return road (with driver), if their scales are accurate, then that's what the car actually weighed back when we had iron heads on it....FWIW...and it doesn't take much to be better looking than I am!....LOL......Cliff

MikesOldMan 04-19-2010 12:53 AM

Well, I guess it's time for me to get in all this "wagon" stuff, lol. Please allow me to introduce myself, although the name just did that. I'm Mikes old man, and I need to tell you guys that I'm old school, really old school, like 64 years old, old school, and sometimes it was a dogfight to use the parts I wanted to use in his motor. Incidentally I was going to use a 268 XE cam, but Jim LeHart talked me out of that, but I still think it'll make a ton of low RPM torque. It's going in a 428 for my 62 Grand Prix. I wanted to build an engine that I could have built in 1970. (when I couldn't dream of affording it). So, since I'm not getting a lot of credit here,(kids) lol. I built the engine and thanks to Jim Lehart for the machine work. I'm extremely happy with what it's doing so far. His much older brother that posted is also very into the Pontiac thing. He's building a small journal stroker and with my bad heart, I just hope I get to see the boys side by side on the starting line before I die. Enjoyed reading all your light hearted and informative replies. Great forum!

Cliff R 04-19-2010 06:17 AM

"Incidentally I was going to use a 268 XE cam, but Jim LeHart talked me out of that, but I still think it'll make a ton of low RPM torque."

The XE268 is not enough cam for a moderate compression 455 engine. I wouldn't even consider one for a 428 build either. I've had scores of complaints from folks who chose them for 455 builds, with two common denominators.....detonation, and DONE by about 4500rpm's.

Those cams have short seat to seat timing, and very good at cylinder filling at lower rpm's. This can/will make 455's detonation sensitive with them when we start getting close to 10 to 1 or higher compression. Probably an OK choice at lower compression ratio's, if you want to further enhance the strong mid-range characteristics of the 455 engine, but they will NOT make any respectable power in the upper mid-range and top end.

We've verified this thru LOTS of second hand information, as I get a LOT of calls in here complaining about that cam in the 455 build with well prepared iron and even Edelbrock heads. I've also had two customers drive/trailer their 455/XE268 combo's considerable distances to our shop to have us custom tune them, with little if any improvment to what they already came up with. I guess that's getting close to "first" hand information, although I didn't build either engine here, don't know where the ICL was set at, or the true SCR, etc, but those engines were still TURDS non the less....

The best 2nd hand story which we've observed FIRST hand, is one of our customers who has a 3700lb GTO with a very well prepared 455, Jim Hand style engine/drivetrain set-up with ported iron heads, 10" Continental converter, 3.73 gears, slicks, and perfect traction. Instead of running mid to high 11's in the 114-117mph range, or even low 12's at 112mph where a lot of folks end up at, he's stuck in the high 12's at 105-106 mph. He says the engine hits really hard, 60' times are mid-1.6's, but falls on it's nose about 4500rpm's. I'm pretty sure he swapped out that cam this Winter for a HR grind, and I'm certain we'll see greatly improved track number from his car this season.

Just pointing out a few FACTS. Mike and Mike's dad, glad to see you are pushing 11 second runs from your combination of parts. Sometimes things just fall together like they're supposed to, even when you don't use all the parts recomended by the "guru's" on the websites.....congrat's and let us know when you get to a 1/4 mile track and post some 11 second runs!.....Cliff

stickboy 04-19-2010 10:53 AM

Cliff, with all due respect, you're the greatest Pontiac tuner/builder ever second only to Jim Hand....OK? Hows that for a pat on the back, Mr non-modified Iron intake, non-modified Qjet, non-modified 30 year old RAIV cam, "cleaned up" 6X heads...this ain't about you or your acheivements...Mike and his dad have put together an awesome POntiac that runs it's ass off, EVEN WITH AN XE274 CAM. Not that easy to run 11's is it......those who have done it know how hard it is to put it all together and make it happen. Most of us (hobbyists like me) have incrementally moved from 13's to 12's to 11's. We do it because the journey is fun....not to simply acheive some end goal. Can we move on now?

I expect to get flamed severely, but whatever...Back to topic...

That car 60 foots awesome! Way to go guys...keep on doing just what you are! Nice job with the Carter carb too, I never had good luck with those things.

Kyflier 04-19-2010 11:32 AM

No disrespect there stickboy, but he was talking about the XE 268 that Mikesoldman was going to use, said nothing of what they did use. Plus gave them a congrats as well.
just my 2 cents

Cliff,
We appreciate the help you've given us, the converter seems to work really well. As for the 428, I'm planning on using it for a restored 62 Grand Prix as a somewhat cheater 421. I'm going to run my 9770716 heads on it too. It's more a show car than anything else. That's the heads on it now and I love the low end torque it makes now and that's exactly what I want it to do. It's unlikely it will ever go down the strip again. It did back in 2000 at Bristol at the old Pontiac meet there. I had a ball! Thanks again to all you guys for the moral support and kind remarks. We are hoping the old wagon will continue to run well. Honestly, it ran better times than I ever expected it to Friday night and that track is generally thought of as the slowest track in these parts, but also by far the best facility within a hundred miles of us.

grandville455 04-19-2010 12:28 PM

What exactly is the convertor :)... Is it the conti 4200? what are the codes on it? Inquiry minds want to know :D ....Cliff? lol

GRUMPASTOY 04-19-2010 12:28 PM

The way I see it, a father and son got in the garage, used the parts and resources they had available and cranked out a quick little grocery-getter... Doesn't matter to me what parts they coulda, woulda, shoulda used, they had the fun and heart-ache of the experience... Props to both for a good job

Build it to abuse it

We really don't know what the converter is. Cliff co-ordinated all that for us with all the info on the car. It seems to stall, from what my son is telling me at about 2800/2900 and I don't know what it's flashing to. We only have six or eight passes so far, so can post more when we get more runs in. I don't do secrets, lol. Will gladly tell you just what is in the car. BTW, that car of yours is out of sight, awesome, fantastic etc! You have gotten a super combo there with tons of character, pun intended, lol. I love it when you don't do things like everyone else does!

I got a converter in a box that said continental on it with no paper work so I personally didn't even know what to expect but I am more than satisfied with what it does. The last thing I told Cliff when I ordered it was that I wanted the front tires in the air if at all possible which was fulfilled fully. When I get home I can give the number off the side the box but past that I have no clue.

That will work cause they put their code on the conv on the outside of the box, Curious to what u have thanks!

Mikes455Wagon 04-19-2010 08:23 PM

I had mom go to the garage and find what was written on the side of the box and it is as follows....

10" 400 P-1P/S (the S may be a 5 not too sure, can't read the hand writing)

Cliff R 04-20-2010 07:22 AM

The converter is a custom 10" unit, it is simply built on the same "chassis" as the popular 3200 stall "Jim Hand" version.

Due to the head/cam/compression combo, vehicle weight, full race applications, etc, it is considerably "looser" than most of the 10" units we send out.

It is not possible to compute an exact stall speed when you build a converter, but we targeted around 3800rpm's (nearly as I can remember) for this application.

Obviously, didn't miss the mark to far a the 60' times are excellent for the combination of parts, as is the ET and MPH.....Cliff

That seems looser than a 3800 cliff? to be able bring it up to 2800 on the brake. Mine doesn't want to go much past 2000 from what i seen at the track and it is a 3500 now... Either way i like it.. just wonder how streetable this particular conv is that he has? Mine is right around 28-3000 at 65 mph cruising

I think you could probably survive on the street with this converter ok. It is a little loose though. The only times I have really personally noticed it was driving it on the car trailer and in reverse. The reverse thing is something I have seen in every converter that was higher than a stock stall speed though. Its not "loose" like some cars you hear at shows and cruise nights that sound like you rev them to 4000 then the car suddenly jumps forward. If I take my foot off of the brake it moves forward with little to no effort. All in all I have to say Im not sure if it could really get any better than 1.59 for my combination but I have some tuning to do as this was the first night out on the car and I will let you know if it improves. Some other food for thought is my car is about 1100 lbs lighter than yours Darby, which takes way less inertia to get moving. The flip side of that is your making way more power than I am (well if I am making as much power as your motor, dad has built me a freak of nature) so it might handle the looser one ok.

I also have the 10" 400 P1 P/S converter. In my 3900 lbs car, 428 ( low 12's ), stalls to 3400 rpm on the highway. Track is 100 or so more rpm for flash. Drives superb on the street, just a little gas and it goes.
