How would you have ordered a new 68 Firebird 400 Convertible? Options, color combinations,engine, transmission,wheels,etc. What would you order to make it the ultimate 68?

68 bird vert 4 spd. , Ram Air II, posi, am/fm radio, hood tach, HD cooling, PDB, Ralley II wheels, Red Lines, Gauges, wood wheel, Deluex interior, rear spoiler, & go out & have some fun.:jumping:

Rear spoiler? That was an option? I thought you could only get those on a Camaro. :)

Otherwise, Rex's list is pretty good except I would have stuck with a deluxe steering wheel. Looks better in the Firebirds, IMHO. The wood wheel is great for the GTO's...but a 'bird isn't a goat. To that list I would add:

I think that is all. There may be some conflict with a couple items such as the 8 track and the console clock.

By going convertible, it isn't an all out race car so I would load it with what I could get "luxury" item wise. Much of which is standard equipment on many cars today. If possible, I would order another with the TH400 and get the Cruise Control. Would they let me do all this to a Ram Air II car? I do have a '68 convertible that I'm working on which is a 400 auto car with alot of these options. Unfortunately, not the original drivetrain.

and yes in 68 you could get non power disc brakes

I can't answer for others, but I grew up with Army green, both my parents served in Army green. The color scheme shifted a bit while I served, but there was always equipment that color around. Hmm, maybe that is why I like it so much.

Going off what the other have said, I would order mine like this. I built mine to be very close.

If I were ordering it for me, it would be a triple black, RAII, 4 speed, Rally II red lines, gauges, hood tach, deluxe wheel, soft ray glass.

If I were ordering it for my wife, it would be pretty much just like the car she has now...Alpine Blue, Parchment, white top, white HO stripes, hood tach, TH400, safe-T-track, PS, PB, A/C, Cruise, AM/FM, rear antenna, rear seat speaker, deluxe interior, power top, soft ray all windows, custom sport steering wheel, console, clock, dual exhaust, rally II...only thing to add would be gauges, 3.08 gears (rather than the 2.56 that came with the car), red lines (rather than white walls that came with the car), and most likely the full HO package...

how would you order now knowing what you do and not using it as your only means of transportation or back then as a driver?????

Flambeaux Burgundy, deluxe white int, PS, PDB, Rally II's with redlines, RA II 400, M-20, 3.55 safety-trac rear, white power top, Rally gauges, hood tach, center console w/clock, am/fm radio.
don't know if you could get a m-20 with the RA II not into the ra car options.
BTW I have a 68 burg 400 auto deluxe white int power top, ps, rally gauge with console and wire wheel hubcaps. complete numbers matching car... will be nice when finished

To the past post that didn't know you could get the rear spoiler for your 68 bird, Yes you could get it, either from the factory or as a dealer added option. the dealer add on was more expensive but some waited because the dealer would usually shy away from them because it made them to hard to sell with because some looked at as a race car with them so many were ordered without it for most any dealer stocking cars. Also I forgot to mention I would have had the 3.55 rear gear in mine as that was the best all around gear for a bird with a Ram Air II. OH! i forgot to say the verts were stiffer because of the body brace because of it being a vert. And the color is Verdao Green not Voodo green.

don't forget radial tires...they were available as an option.

The rest of the money goes to multiple sets of rear tires. :D

But just like in 2002 when I really wanted to order a Firehawk T/A, the reality is - it would have been a used 1967 green 6cyl.

Jinx, i've got the duplicate to that in a 68 GTO. Shown here with Hurst wheels but I have the original wire wheel covers as well.

in 69 I bought a 68 Camaro spoiler for my 68 Bird.
It was $17 list price and my cost(dealer net) was $14.
Until 69 T/A there was no Pontiac Firebird spoilers dealer or factory

355 and M20 was not available in 68 RA

Thanks for the replies, the reason I was asking is I have a 68 PHS documented 400 Convertible that was originally Flambeau Burgandy, Red standard interior, and 3 speed transmission. It is currently a late model Bright White, Black standard interior, NOM,hood tach, and 4 speed transmission.It is as good a car as I have ever owned, PO did a good job on mechanics and body work. I don't like the Bright White and want to paint it a 68 color. Also, I ordered a new Parchment standard interior from Legendary and have it ready to install. Red interiors tend to fade and I have always loved the 68 Pearl Parchment. I was originally going to paint it the Burgandy but I have not been able to find it in modern formulas. I was thinking really serious about Voodoo Green. PPG has the formula for it in their new Muscle Colors line. It won't ever be a numbers matching car but I want to showcase how good a 68 Bird can look in a sea of Camaros. I know I want the original style exhast splitters, does anyone have a source for them? I also have 14x7 rally II wheels and will order Diamondback redlines soon. This car is also equipped with tilt wheel and wood wheel. I have a set of Longbranch manifolds to install and will install Ram Air pans.Car is presently equipped with a Camaro spoiler which I may remove and install a new deck lid. What would you guys do?

Oh, and I'd delete the convertible top and add a white vinyl top :)

I totally agree with you Cammer, X2 on the BS. Never saw a PHS with that option,or an original 67 or 68 with a spoiler. I was sixteen in 1968, and I don't remember a Firebird with a rear spoiler. Only saw them on Camaro.

If your asking what to do with the spoiler my opinion would bo get rid of it.The only place for a rear spoiler on a first gen Firebird is a 69 T/A.Why make your car look like a Camaro.Most don't know that the spoiler was not even an option on a 67 Camaro,it started in 68.

Alpine Blue, parchment pearl interior, black top, console auto, 3.9 safe-T-track. Was ordered with HO stripes and red walls, white air scoops were added later, lots of other options. Would have been a stunner in 68. I have no history but who ever ordered it got the best, if it was up to me I would have added the hood mounted tacho. Bruce

Thanks for the replies. I think I will get a 1/2 pint of Verdero Green from Dupont and 1/2 pint of Flambeau Burgandy from PPG and spray them out on a card and see which one looks the best with the Pearl Parchment interior. Some of the modern formulas just don't look right. Anyway I am going to try to make as sharp a 68 as I can.
