I figured I would squeeze one more contest in prior to the GTO/POCI Nats. Hope to see many of you there as I am a guest speaker plus I will have a small indoor vendor spot. Pete Serio will be also with me. Pete has been a long time personal friend of mine for over 30 years.

The prize for this contest is a discontinued printed on two sides full color GTO T shirt. Pretty certain I can match the size you want if you win.

Its a part that appears at one time was offered reconditioned/rebuilt but you never see them reconditioned/rebuilt today.

What is the EXACT part I am referring to.

The one I have covers up to 1966 so it was offered at least thru the 1966 model year.

Again I have proof.

The answer is spark plugs. I wil have my buddy post a photo of a kit I bought at Carlisle years ago a company actually reconditioned and sold set of 8 spark plugs they happen to be AC which if you played one of the other contests stands for Alfred Champion and later AC spark plugs.

Any rate you have to admit it is unusual to see reconditioned spark plugs packaged for retail. The packaging says quality reconditioned and tested!

It lists various cars up through 1966 models so it was in the heart of the GTO era. Unfortunately no price is on the package so I have no idea what they sold for.

That is the extent of this history lesson Mr AMC will post photo soon I hope.

Too weird really. I remember seeing some sort of Spark Plug Reconditioning equipment that would blast (glass bead?) the electrodes clean - when the plug was inserted into the special cavity designed to hold the plug. The machine (countertop box) I remember seeing in an old Auto Parts Maxhine Shop was a commercial item with mostly yellow painting...and was from post WWII time frame in the 1950s.

I remember seeing machines that cleaned spark plugs back in my youth, but never seen them packaged for retail sales.

As a kid any money saved this would be the way to go. On a similar note we were one of the very first companies to get 4 barrell and notably tri-power carbs rebuilt for GTO customers. We also sold that "stuff" coating that went on the end carb butter fliers so they would seal better on the trips...called something like dyechromate?

This place would also put that "color" back on the carbs to make them look factory new again.

I am sure others do it today but that was one of the services we offered back in the day besides getting shifters rebuilt at Hurst.

Now we get ECMs rebuilt for our Buick market and powermaster brake units.

Probably have another contest up and running towards end of July. I need to think of one that will stump the panel for more than a few days.

Same here. I used to clean them when I worked at a full service gas station back in 1970. And also cleaned them, with the same machine for aircraft piston engines back in '69. Never saw them reconditioned and packaged at any store from back then up to and including today.

I remember back in high school auto shop class we had one of those little spark plug cleaners that sandblasted those puppies clean. The kids in my class all had a good time cleaning up their dirty spark plugs and making their cars (or their parent's cars if they didn't have one of their own) run a little better.

I thought a bit about what they may have rebuilt/reconditioned and sold back in the day that you can't really get now and spark plugs seemed to fit, and all of the GTOs most certainly had that part in common.

Buying a set of cleaned-up and tested spark plugs may seem bit far-fetched for those of us who really who really think nothing of buying a new set of plugs and tossing out the old ones. I figured buying a bargain-priced set of reconditioned spark plugs back in the sixties when it was not uncommon for folks to tune up the family car in the driveway wouldn't be out of the question for any budget-minded car owner.
