Gas Prices?

Filled up today and local station was @ $3.42 per gallon for Regular Unleaded.

IIRC, last week same station, same blend was around $3.29...

tekheavy 04-09-2014 06:43 PM

Paid $3.79 for regular yesterday. Gotta love NY.

GTOMazz 04-09-2014 06:52 PM

$3.65 here, when will it end?

hurryinhoosier62 04-09-2014 07:07 PM

Went from $3.65 yesterday to $3.79 today. I filled up at BJs where it was ONLY $3.62.

Gordon Church 04-09-2014 07:41 PM

You think that's expensive try a 1.46 a litre for regular unleaded that's $6.62 an imperial gallon or 5.30 a us gallon..... Montreal QC

CDN2PLS2 04-09-2014 07:58 PM

At Least you're STILL in Canada!!

Matt Meaney 04-09-2014 07:58 PM

the refineries are in the process of switching over from the winter blend gas, to the summer blend. this results in a temporary lower volume of refined gas available and increases the cost. once the change over is complete, the prices will regulate down again. same thing happens in the fall. (only the other way)

yeah, right. I'm calling bull sh!t on this. just want to increase the profit margin more. it will go up $0.15- $0.25 or more and maybe drop $0.03- $0.05.

The Champ 04-09-2014 08:24 PM

Our local gas prices dropped $.06 per gallon today.

$3.89 to $3.99 for regular, and $4.29 for Premium.

Some great excuses for when gas prices soar:

1) Summer blends, or winter blends, or not enough blends, or too much supply, or not enough supply.

2) Something happened to an oil refinery somewhere on the planet.

3) There's unrest in the Middle East.

4) There's unrest in Asia.

If you stick to these 4 excuses, they can justify price hikes whenever they want, and the sheeple continue to buy the stuff.

I miss the days of 2008, when gas was $1.80 a gallon, under a leader that didn't want us all driving electric cars.

Dennis H. 04-09-2014 09:11 PM

Gas prices are all BS. The oil companies can raise or lower prices based upon what criteria that they set up. Media always reports refineries doing maintenance, world crisis in middle east and so on. There is no basis on the price per gallon, I have seen outrageous prices when oil was $85.00 a barrel and prices drop when oil was $110.00 per barrel. It makes no sense and never will. It is their ball, and they will continue to do whatever works for their agenda. Shortages are manufactured and gives them basis to raise or lower prices based upon how they want to conduct business. It is the same for the stock market. We will never be a winner in todays world!!!

John V. 04-09-2014 09:12 PM

You guys must be getting hosed!

I only have to pay the retailers here about $2.96/gal for regular.

Of course, that doesn't include about $0.53/gal that I have to fork over to the federal gov't and state gov't for the privilege of doing business with the local retailer. My retailer's a nice guy, he figures the tax for me and sets the pump price accordingly, saves me the inconvenience of figuring out the tax and paying it separately.

I'm sure his wholesale cost includes a pile of buried taxes too. But I'm sure if he could buy it tax free, he would just pocket the extra profit since he isn't that nice a guy to share the savings with me.

He complains to me that he has to pay rent, maintain his equipment, purchase liability insurance, deal with drive-offs, but I've seen his 4 yr. old Kia, newer than what I drive. He can't convince me that he isn't charging a little more than he needs to.

importsmasher 04-09-2014 09:15 PM

Saw it this morning for $3.19 per gallon. It has dropped a few pennies in the last couple of weeks.

Gas prices are not that bad when you consider inflation. Willing to bet all of us make a lot more money then we did in 1983.

John V. 04-09-2014 10:28 PM

GRX, somewhat valid point but one big flaw in your thinking. In 1983, I was 6 yrs out of college.

In order to compare apples to apples, you would need to argue that a guy 6 yrs out of college TODAY with similar value to an employer now as I offered in 1983 is making a lot more money than I was then. Then compare that increase with the rise in gasoline price.

Yes, I make a lot more money, but I'm a LOT more valuable to my employer today. The increase in my income was only partly fueled by inflation.

Comparing more rationally, gasoline prices take a bigger bite out of household expenses today vs. 1983 than a comparison of an indidual's income rise over 30 years would suggest.

However, on the whole I agree. Gasoline is a pretty good value for me.

To those that complain about the high price and tend to demonize oil companies, I'd ask this. If the price fell to $1.80/gal, do you think consumption would rise?

The answer is obvious. Supply and demand is at the root of the price of gasoline.

If gasoline was such a lucrative commodity, we should expect refineries to pop up like weeds. It isn't happening in the US. There are multiple reasons why not. But if one is willing to think beyond one's own preconceived opinion, you'll see that producers and refiners are subject to market forces. Blaming them is just as irrational as blaming consumers for the high price.

Consumers keep buying the stuff because they, knowingly or not, consider it "worth it". You might consider that US consumers HAVE adjusted to higher prices by decreasing their total miles and buying more fuel efficient vehicles. But reduction in US consumption is being offset by global increases.

You might wonder why the US is among the largest exporters of gasoline. Could it be that domestic regulation and policy has sometimes made it more profitable to sell gasoline overseas than to sell it domestically? Maybe refiners should be less profit motivated and more "patriotic". Or maybe they should be legally compelled to do the "right thing" just so the rest of us can more cheaply enjoy the fruits of their labor.

I'd suggest you be careful about what you wish for.

Baron Von Zeppelin 04-09-2014 11:55 PM

Over the past 6-8 years NC has joined the upper ranks in the nation on amount of taxes per gallon. We used to be mid-pack.

Last week they announced proposed legislation to also add an additional tax -
to also tax us by the mile.

After yearly safety and/or emmissions inspection -
your mileage driven in that vehicle for the year will be calculated from previous year.
And you will be sent a bill reflecting the miles you drove.

Your following yearly registration will be forbidden if the tax is unpaid.
Similar to current vehicle property tax parameters.

A.W.Dille 04-10-2014 09:46 AM

The station where I get my ethanol free premium raised prices .33 per gallon. Going to have to do something different for the tiller. movers and my GTO and truck. Can't afford those prices, paying property tax when I renew my tags is enough.
I have less money coming in now than I a few years ago so unless I necessarily have to go somewhere my stuff is going to stay parked, as is the wife's car which is the easiest thing we own on gas but due to needing more than I can afford to do to it right now is parked on account of overdue on inspection and tags are out.
Gas and oil prices have gotten out of hand for sure, may have to double up on the Aleve and throw a saddle on one of my horses, ride out the rodeo and make that my daily transportation if I need to go to town for anything I don't need the truck for.

A few weeks ago noticed prices had jumped .20 cents overnight.

Had lunch w a fellow Pontiacer and mentioned it and he and his wife ran into same thing while on a driving trip. He reminded me that excuse then was it's due to "Spring Break". Has continued to progressively climb since then.

Back around that same post-Spring Break time, I noted that locally Diesel was @ $3.95 per gallon. Impacting shipping etc. no doubt.

Americans do the right thing buy driving less and buying more fuel effient cars but still pay the price for oil companies exporting fuel to other buyers
From the news Bloomberg

Eleven tankers were chartered to export clean products off the West Coast in the past month, up from two tankers during the same period last year, ship-fixture data compiled by Bloomberg show. Gasoline exports from the region rose 6.9 percent to 2.36 million barrels in January, a record high for the month, according to EIA data.

“I don’t think people are driving more here, so if this isn’t because of demand, then it does leave you to wonder if it isn’t all exports,”

Driving less and buying fuel efficient cars is not the "right thing", it is simply a predictable human behavioral response to rising prices, basic Econ 101 stuff.

“I don’t think people are driving more here, so if this isn’t because of demand, then it does leave you to wonder if it isn’t all exports,”

Does this dimwit believe that demand only occurs on US soil?

And as I also mentioned, certain US laws make it cheaper for refiners to ship overseas rather than to domestic ports. Since US refiners are competing globally, it makes perfect sense to sell to buyers that offer better profit margins for the refiners. If those buyers are overseas, the product will be exported.

That shouldn't be so difficult to understand. Nobody should have to "wonder" about exports.

If you dislike free markets and prefer that gasoline be restricted and controlled, I guess you can lobby for that.

Again I'd suggest you be careful about what you wish for.

I just did the inspection-tags-property tax on my daily driver , Monday.
First time under the new program.

The new procedure with paying property tax at DMV on same day is creating some binds for a lot of people. Going to take some getting use to - versus the former staggered procedure.
Everything due on same day doesn't leave much wiggle room.

I listened in on the totals as all the folks ahead of me stepped up to the clerk.
All were between $150-300
Plus they had already paid whatever the 96-newer inspection fee is now (35 45 ?).

So approx $200 - $350 in 1 day for most of them.

My 89 VW Diesel Jetta was $29 for tags - $4 for taxes - $13 for inspection
$46 total

My 85 VW TurboDiesel Jetta is $0 for taxes
because they quit billing for taxes that are less than $4 in my county.

plus they average 48-52 mpg overall btw
Wisest money i ever spent was buying these VW Diesel vehicles.
Else i'd be saddling a horse too ... or putting a big basket on a bicycle.

Sounds like you could use 1 of them too A.W. !

GT182 04-10-2014 10:30 PM

Sounds like you guys need address and tags from another state. NC is another state, now added to my list. that I wouldn't move to. ;)

I returned from Arizona on Monday where Regular was $3.50. When I got home (also on Monday) Regular in CA was $4.00.

mikeb 04-11-2014 01:28 AM

I've seen regular priced upwards of $4.19-ish here where I live in a L.A. suburb. Costco has regular for about $3.89 or so right now. I'm sure it will go up by the time I need to fill up again.

The Champ 04-11-2014 06:49 AM

When I was in Germany for Christmas, I was paying over $7.00 per gallon for diesel. Mind you, in Germany, diesel is about 10% less expensive than regular E10 gas.

Maybe the prices here aren't so bad...

2002Z4CSS 04-11-2014 08:38 AM

Gas is $3,66 around my house. Just went up from $3.57. No reason to raise the prices other than greed.

Baron Von Zeppelin 04-11-2014 04:45 PM

3.50-3.60 per Gal regular gas
3.95 per Gal diesel

Pepsi on sale for 99 cents per 2 liter

Just read an article in our Electric Utility Co-Op monthly magazine that Germany pays 3x per kilowatt/hour than what we pay here.

Germany is a great place to visit - but couldn't afford to live there.

Chastings 04-11-2014 04:51 PM

This could be a painful year for driving old cars and boats. I paid 3.99/gallon in Richfield, NC last week for ethanol-free premium. It's basically .50/gallon more expensive than premium at a normal station but will probably save me a carb rebuild later... Last year I had to go through the carburetors in my boat and damn near just about every yard tool that I owned.

Dave from England 04-11-2014 04:57 PM

Gas Prices

Gas price in England for the equivalent of a U S gallon $8 .38c you should be so lucky
& diesel is more expensive

Deadhead 04-12-2014 07:35 AM

Ukraine.

Gas prices are not set by oil companies any more than gold prices are set by gold miners. RBOB gasoline is a publicly traded commodity. The price goes up and down as traders bid or sell the futures based on supply, demand and expectation of future prices based on perception of what effects current events will have on them.

Chastings, went from 3.99 to 4.33 here at one of my local stations, won't be putting much gas in the GTO this year, or have to find something to cut the effects of ethanol, my truck is a chore to keep going, constant problems with the carburetor on account of the ethanol. And got a feeling I'm starting to have the same problems with the Grand Prix.

zephyrracer 04-12-2014 08:29 AM

$385.9 for regular, DOT was just on the news and said people are driving less because of the price of gas, DOT said just because prices go up doesn't mean increased taxes for road repair so they are looking for more tax per gallon, how about drill baby drill I'm sure that would drive the price down!!! One of the freedoms lost is getting in your car and going into town or just a ride to take care of business, now I wait until there is 5 to 10 things to take care of before I fire up the car.

Gregg

Hanzel 04-12-2014 10:55 AM

Where will it end..

For example
Over here you'll pay for regular, Euro 1.70 / Liter. Or that's Euro 6.54/ Gallon, or $ 9.08 / Gallon and still rising   .

We are on wrong metric system over here:confused:

MikeNoun 04-13-2014 10:51 AM

Well, here's what I don't understand.

Gas was $1.80 in 2008, then started to climb.

In 2009, new energy policies have been pushed through, along with massive spending on "green" energy.

Between Jan 2009 - April 2014

1) U.S Crude Oil Production UP 62%

2) Petroleum imports DOWN 52%

3) Regular gas prices UP 95%

If unrest in the Middle East, or Ukraine, make prices fluctuate, then why are gas prices at $4.00 a gallon when we produce MORE oil in America, and import LESS?

AZ64GP 04-13-2014 11:10 AM

I saw a story on the news the other day that blames the higher price of ethanol for the rise in gas prices. Originally ethanol was added because it was cheaper than 100% gasoline, but now it's almost as expensive. The price of refined gasoline has been pretty flat, but ethanol has jumped up to $3/gal in the last few weeks. Who knows if that's really the reason, but it does make some sense.

Ed Fitzgerald 04-13-2014 11:38 AM

Pipelines

I just met with Enbridge and Trans-Canada officials about their 2 pipelines that run through a property I acquired a couple of years ago. Seems they want to do some repair and inspection activity on the both pipes. They offered me 1000 bucks each for access to the property and based on the affected area I will receive about 5 grand from each and they will repair any damage and pay me for the soybeans they destroy. Kinda like pennies from heaven. They also said they were contemplating putting in another 48" pipe and the compensation from it would be big. As for gas prices I too am not too impressed with the pricing scheme but what can we do. Ed

What is your Diesel price per gallon? IIRC it was nearly 1/2 dollar more than gas here...at or near $4.00 per for Diesel vs Gas at or near $3.42.

Interesting OPEC pricing read

OPEC crude oil production output falls in March

"The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) decreased it's crude oil production from 30.11 barrels per day in February 2014 to 29.65 million b/d in March, according to Platts.

This number of barrels per day is the lowest OPEC has produced since mid-2011, Platts reported The total drop was 550,000 b/d and three countries - Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Libya - account for 440,000 barrels of the decrease.

Some of the decline has been attributed to insurgent attacks in Iraq, which closed one of the country's important pipelines, according to Platts. Prior to March, Iraq's crude oil output had increased because of improvements in exporting capabilities. However, difficulties such as insurgent attacks will likely make the country's output inconsistent.

Saudi Arabia has a reduced output because of maintenance. Saudi output in February was 9.7 million b/d and was 9.6 million b/d in March, Platts reported. The output in March was the lowest Saudi Arabia has contributed since June 2013.

Libyan crude oil output came to a halt in 2011, but has slowly recovered. Current output has been affected by political unrest, strikes, protests and blocked ports.

More information on OPEC can be found at PennEnergy's Research Center.

Then starts over.

quicksilver97ta 04-15-2014 03:26 PM

Why is it 3.49 at the Red Oak Racetrac, Wal Mart, Valero, and 2 Exxons but 3.59 just 5 miles down the road at the Waxahachie Racetrac, Wal Mart, Valero, and Shell? 10 cents a gallon times how-ever-many gallons they sell is a lot of money. And then another week it can be the other way around.
