Another 70 t/a resto underway
 

Well I finally got started on my Lucy blue t/a. Going to have lots of questions as I go! First question I have is on the column it has the linkage for an automatic on the column. It is used for the same thing as the automatic.

It turns the collar on the column to lock the steering in Park and for the reverse lights.

Oh sure that makes sense! Part that threw me is that it wasn't hooked up and just seemed odd that it was there.

"Back drive Linkage" , Lucky to have it present. If this car had headers , it would be missing

Another question I have.. The car is all numbers matching and I want to be able to drive the car and not have to worry about it for a lack of a better term. Would it make sense to put the original engine on a shelf and put in a 72 ho that I have?

have you considered finding a 400 4-bolt block, stroke it with a 428 crank, and run Ram IV top end on it. I've run a Ram IV top end on a 428 many years ago, and it was awesome.

I have considered running a 428. My old man has a ra4 that's a blast, so it's certainly crossed my mind. I'll have to check my 400 blocks too see if any are 4 bolts.

My 73 4-speed had the same linkage hanging in the same position. Someone unhooked it and just left it there. Weird thing was, it didn't have headers yet. Running Tri-Ys now.

the 70 I have been helping with was like this, just pick an area as a project and get it done, area by area. a rotary could help. The lower 'air horn" area is available repop.

PS, you are NOT alone!

Like a friend keeps telling me it's only metal! You are right! There is probably worse ones out there too. Going to need LOTS of advice and knowledge on this project.

I am working on my '70 as well. Mine will need a lot of outer sheet metal but structure is solid and rust free. I will subscribe as I will probably have alot of the same questions as you do.

Looks like a lot of work but the good thing is its a blue car with the original drivetrain.

Reading your thread has given me hope!

pretty common areas to have to deal with. might as well figure on 2 quarters, the tail panel, wheelhouses, trunk extensions, trunk n floors. had to patch my lower cowl in the same area, but wasn't quite as bad. I have an NOS door support for pass side, pic n post down in the classifieds.

If it was just that I could probably handle it. Part that's got me the most flustered is that it needs both frame rails. Car was hit on the passenger side pretty hard and the trunk and frame are messed up.

I was actually lucky with my 71 because the rails where fine on the car and so was the inner tail panel. We had a few good reference points so it was not that bad. Also my inner wheel houses where solid. On you project I don't know where I would start. You are very fortunate to have the original drivetrain. Good luck with your car and the nice thing is the repo parts that are out there are very good.

If anybody knows of a good rust free body let me know. I would like to splice in bigger pieces so I could keep the car more intact. Like cutting the car from the rockers back. And putting the quarters, trunk, frame rails, tail panel, etc in as a whole.

Don't lose hope. At least you have the original drivetrain. I am missing my original block.

That's not a bad idea.

The car is for sure worth saving. Just trying to decide what is the best way to fix it so I end up with the best end product it can be.

I don't know anyone that's done it on a sec gen.

I do Not, and I have seen almost anything fixed around here. The rear unibody , once on a rotary is Not a big deal to get panels on and welded up. plug welding spot welds is easy
Its all possible and can be done right , here is a buddies car , 70 Formula ( its back together now but not painted yet
