'68 Rally paint stripe

Does anyone have an original stripe car or a clear copy of the page that shows the rally stripe measurements?
I think I have it right but the copy in the assembly manual is very hard to read.

Let me approach this a different way..
Does anyone have the '69 assembly manual?
If so, look on page 91 and see if you can read the measurements noted. If not, I'll go with my interpretation. ;)

Pic below of a striped car I owned back in '82 but the dual stripe details are not visible..

I think this photo from my manual copy is readable...

I'm mainly interested in the spacing BETWEEN the stripes. I think the other stuff I can decipher. Looks like .180 to me...? But seems kind of wide...

Greg Reid 10-09-2017 06:02 PM

Thanks kk68. That's definitely better than mine but still waffling on the space between. What's it look like to you? .180 or .120?

cruzingratiot 10-09-2017 06:18 PM

looks like the 2 in the .250 dimention

kk68 10-09-2017 06:29 PM

I'm pretty sure it's 0.120.
So, 0.06 or close to 1/16" for upper stripe; and 0.120 or 1/8" for lower stripe; with 0.25 or 1/4" between. Lower stripe is 1/2" above lower body line crease.
Can't read the details on exactly how the ends come to a point, but they angle together to form point.

Hope that helps. Mine had the rally stripes but I haven't put them back on yet. I plan on using the vinyl pin striping tape in 1/16" and 1/8" widths.

Here’s a nice factory picture of a Rally stripe car.

Formulajones 10-10-2017 09:12 AM

Boy you sure don't see many restored like that today. I'm guessing this went away after 68?

Greg Reid 10-10-2017 09:53 AM

.120 seems right to me. I did a mock-up on a piece of sheetmetal using the .180 spacing and it looks good but I don't think the originals had that big of a gap between the lines.
As for when it went away Formulajones, I've never seen any car but a '68 with it and damn few of those. I'm thinking of adding a black stripe to mine using 'One-Shot' pinstriping enamel.

north 10-10-2017 10:34 AM

The stripe was an option in both 68 and 69. Pretty rare in 69 anyway with only 9 of the 450 non judge PHS's I have ordered with it. I'm not aware of any documentation stating it wasn't available with a Judge but logically it wasn't. The 9 examples I have are from various plants and colors, the earliest is Feb 69 but that is probably not meaningful since my sampling is so small. Worth noting that 6 of the 9 come from ragtops meaning 1% of hardtops had the stripe and 5% of my convertibles did.

I parted out a 69 convertible 15-20 years ago that had the Rallye stripes on the window sticker (Liberty blue with white stripes). Car had been repainted but we found the ends of the painted stripes on the inside back edge of the fenders and the inside leading edge of the doors when we pulled it apart. They were exactly as described; 1/2" from the lower body feature line to 1/8" lower stripe and 1/4" between it and the upper 1/16" stripe. I took note of it because I tried it (with stick on pin-striping) on my GTO convertible. I hated the look, it made the car seem high and took away the cleanness of the lines of the car, drawing your eyes to the bottom. My car was Matador red and I tried both white and black, black wasn't as bad since it was less noticeable but still did nothing for the car.

I guess if I had a car that had it on the PHS I'd consider putting it on the car (tape only) but I'd never add it to a car that wasn't ordered with it.

Greg Reid 10-10-2017 10:38 AM

Ignore the first paragraph in my response above. I see it all now. It was the quarter inch between the lines that seemed excessive but that is clearly what that measurement is.
Good idea to try it with tape north. A lot easier to get rid of if I don't like the look. I've been going back and forth with trying it ever since I got my car back from paint.

I hear you north on the stripe not being particularly appealing and in most cases, I agree. I don't really like it on the factory photo posted earlier...but on my car, it kind of looks like it might work in black. My whole car is kind of a black, turquoise and chrome scheme. I even left the steering wheel black. Couldn't bring myself to paint such a nice original wheel. It's almost overloaded with Turquoise except for the top and wheels.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1507688406]

I made up a test panel using the factory measurements clarified earlier. Just to see what it looks like.

north 10-10-2017 11:26 PM

The gap between the stripes is larger than typically seen but I think it was intentional given the stripes were low and further away from the eye.

Greg Reid 10-11-2017 09:39 AM

Yeah, that spacing didn't seem right and that was what I thought my original question was but it was a brain fart..I won't even try to explain.
I'm still just playing with the idea. It's like a tattoo...you need to be sure! I'll do the tape and see if it works for me first.

Jeff Hamlin 10-11-2017 05:11 PM

FWIW

Greg, I would take a very clear/bright straight on side-view picture as close up as possible and then use a image editor on the computer.
You may save some time and/or tape while you mull it over.

This was just a quick paint upload...

Greg Reid 10-11-2017 07:29 PM

Hey, that's pretty cool. I have no idea how to do that but I'll look into it. I mean, that's way thicker and more 'in your face' than what I would do but even that image kinda gives me a visualizer. Funny you should do it that way also because I was thinking of doing away with the spear in front of the wheel opening.

Greg Reid 10-11-2017 07:41 PM

Yeah, that's probably close enough ilo. It may grow on me but right now, I'm not feelin' it. I'm still interested enough to maybe invest in a cheapo tape job to see it in person.

Greg,

Here's the only close up photo I have of the rally stripes on my car before I started the restoration. Clearly they are not to the factory specs we deciphered from the assembly manual. I'm sure they are not factory original as the car was definitely repainted prior to my purchase. And I think the stripes were applied as tape. I wonder how the factory actually applied the Rally Stripe option, decal, paint or tape?

I like the black rally stripes, particularly in my case with triple white scheme. I think it accentuates the "coke bottle" styling, but is subtle from a distance. You hardly notice them in the old side view photo of my car.

Based on these old pics not sure I will go with the factory specs. As you've been wrestling with, kinda like them a little closer together than the 0.25". You also got to wonder, unless they were decals, how accurately the factory was at following specs for applying the stripes.

I'm going to look through my car show photos to see if I can find some other examples of the stripes.

That's an excellent photo kk68. They are much closer to what I can see from pics of my old Mayfair Maize car. The spacing seems incorrect in the assembly manual. If I do it, I am not going to put them that far apart. I'm certain the original pinstripes were painted, as they were on all previous years. Photos I've seen from the era shows them using a jig to paint the stripes.
Your rear stripe indicates to me that it's not the original. I don't recall them coming to a point at the rear and also, it should be 1/2" above the style line, whereas yours is right on the line. Spacing and size seem right though.

I found another pic of my car from back when I first brought it home. The stripe is pretty subtle. In fact, I never even recalled the stripe until someone on this forum pointed it out from this photo... I don't think that the car had never been repainted and still wore the original wheel discs. I suspect that the side moulding was dealer applied.
On the other hand, it looks like a single line so it too may have been applied by a previous owner. It's been almost 35 years since I got rid of the car...memories 'change'.

I know brochures are notoriously inaccurate (note the 400 on the rocker trim), but I'm thinking this picture from the '68 performance brochure shows the stripes pretty close to how they actually were.

kk68 10-12-2017 09:31 PM

Well there you go. Agree with trophy421. Although, interestingly when I pull out and look at my actual brochure you can see that the distance from body crease to lower stripe varies quite a bit in this photo. On the door it's almost right on the body line crease, while the front part of fender it's quite a bit higher. Obviously the factory was not as particular as us. Stripes also appear to be closer than the 1/4" specified in the assembly manual.

Another note, if you look at the brochure 2-page spread photo of the hardtop right before the convertible, black rally stripes were clearly retouched in the photo as they cut across the flower stems in the foreground 🤔

Greg Reid 10-12-2017 10:19 PM

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...9&d=1507855133

Yeah, that looks right to me.
Agreed that the line appears to waver more than I'd be happy with. Also, I'm almost ready to believe that the .250" between the lines is a gaffe in the assembly manual.

Jeff Hamlin 10-13-2017 05:37 AM

Missed that one,

I must have easily looked in this brochure 100 times and never noticed those stripes...

I love the look of lacquer factory paint cars like that pic from I Dream of Jeannie. These base coat clear coat paint jobs are like a colored mirror...you look at a car and just see reflections of the background like a mirror.

68gtoMN 10-16-2017 11:09 PM

Greg, I just saw a car for sale online this week that had the original paint (Verdoro Green) with this White stripe. I just searched for it but came up empty. Dang it! I'll keep looking.

Formulajones 10-17-2017 08:19 AM

Actually Greg, I think that looks pretty good. Looks good on the yellow one above too.

I remember 66 or 67 chevelle Super Sports having a similar stripe as well. Accents the body line down there and breaks it up just enough to be subtle.

Greg Reid 10-17-2017 10:00 AM

Thanks Kurt. Post it up if you find it.
As soon as my shift settles down into something I can get used to, I'll try to find some tape stripes. I've been working crazy shifts for the last month and no end in sight right now.

They should fire the guy who painted the stripe on the I dream of Jeannie car, he didn't even follow the body line up front!

I finally got around to trying this with a cheap parts store striping kit. Not to scale but gives me an idea of what it would look like. I don't see it being worth the effort to do the way I was going to...with paint.
Also, trying a new wheel. :)

Love that Blue! Somewhere I have old (online) pictures I saved of a Red 68 that was my motivation for getting my car done. Its had white rally stripes & my first thought was "why would somebody add those to correctly restored car?" not because I didn't like them, but rather I had no clue until later years it was a factory option. :)
I like them, but I'll bet most people wold not realize they ever came factory.

Greg Reid 11-06-2017 10:28 AM

Yeah, I ran across a photo like that myself. Maybe this one?

I've only seen a few cars with these stripes, but thought they were kind of neat because they're different.
So now that my car has been brought back from the brink after 34 years, I figured I'd try them...but I was hesitant to have them painted since I wasn't sure how they'd look.
So I opted to go with auto parts store 'tape' first to make sure that I actually liked them.
Since it's $10 cheapo pinstripe, it's not exact to the factory specs, but it does give you an idea, which was all I wanted.
I know the placement is probably off a little bit though.
Jury is still out, but I do kind of like the way it looks with them.
I'm going to leave it as-is for now until I decide if I want to make this permanent with paint.

Yeah, I was in the same boat myself. For me it's not enough of an effect to go to the trouble of painting it. Also, it brings attention to some less than perfect body lines in that area on my car. Looks good on yours though!

That's the same way I see it Charles. I was just a little hazy on whether that 'Bottom' line was .120 or .180.

Bigd400 05-13-2018 03:24 PM

This forum is awesome! I was looking for info and a member directed me here and I have spent the last few days finding everything I was looking for.

I am a long ways from finishing restoring my 69 GTO but one of the options listed is D98 accent stripe (Tape). The car was painted in the early 70’s so have no idea what it originally looked like. I had assumed it was the judge stripe and was thinking it would look good. So not as excited about this pin stripe but we’ll see if it goes back on.

Cameo white with red interior and wire wheel hub caps. Would it look good or not?? Safe to say the accent stripe would of been red and tape not painted?

north 05-13-2018 03:35 PM

The pin stripes were painted by the factory. I’m honestly not crazy about the look of those stripes. I had a liberty blue 69 ragtop that had them.

I’d buy a set of the typical tape pinstripes at an auto parts store to test if you like the look or not.

Given your car s color scheme I’m sure they were red.

Alright thanks for that. When I get back home I am gonna take a little harder look in that area on the back side of the fenders to see if there’s any thing hiding in there. Looked up higher but I was looking for the typical judge stripe.

Also the ram air stickers would of still been black then? As didn’t they only come in white and black??
