It's hard to believe that Pypes has been around for 15 years now. Many of you long time members may recall that Pypes got its start right here in the Pontiac community. Before Pypes was a brand, it was an accumulation of components assembled into a kit to fit the GTO. We had sourced a pair of tailpipes and X-pipe, added a choice of readily available mufflers from famous brands and sold them to many of you here on the PY Forums.

The PYPES name was soon after inspired by the PY forums. PY was short for Performance Years and seemed like an appropriate name for the forums. The 'PY' tag stuck and later the PYpes brand was born. . Otherwise, the company name would have been 'Pipes'!

Here was the initial announcement:

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=428420

At some point, someone made the observation that PYPES stood for Performance Years Performance Exhaust Systems. Very clever but yours truly never even made that connection until someone brought it up to us years later.

Around 2005, we had a contest on these forums. We wanted a new name for our loudest muffler. One of our members came up with the winning name. 'Violator'. That muffler still remains one of our most popular mufflers.

Another marketing compliment we got was with our URL. http://pypesexhaust.com Many people citing how clever it was to put 'sex' in the middle as a subliminal reference. Again, I'd love to take credit for that but it was simply an accident.

Now to the reason for the trip back in time.....We think it's time to freshen up our logo. We'd like your opinion. Take a look at these logos and give us your vote.

Chief of the 60's 10-16-2018 10:19 AM

I went with number one. I have done a lot of advertising as well as signage and the rule of thumb always was "bold and bright", no dark colors. So IMO number 2 is out. You can see why just in the photo. Every one sticks out except 2. Now, if you change the red to yellow it might make a big difference.

PurelyGTO68 10-16-2018 10:40 AM

#1 has the most promise in my opinion.
Dark color on dark background is undesirable so #2 is not ideal unless you change the colors.

I like the simplicity of #1 because it is less dated and still communicates the product well (resembles bent tubing and laser CNC processes). The red tag line is unreadable on the dark background though....

Are you always going to have a dark background? If not, what colors are you using for white background?

Is there a reversed version?
Is it always stacked or is there a linear version?

#2 is the best logo design, IMHO.

You could play with the colors to make some people happy if needed. But the actual design is a keeper. It looks like an exhaust.

goatless 10-16-2018 11:21 AM

#1 is the way to go. It looks like the evolution of the original logo- which is good for brand recognition. The little streak/star burst at the bottom gives it dynamic motion and suggests the image of an exhaust.

Not a fan of #2, no matter what the color. The big circle, while I understand that it is supposed to represent an exhaust, just looks like a big knob hanging off the logo.

vwmailman 10-16-2018 11:22 AM

I like #1.

GT182 10-16-2018 11:37 AM

My pick is #2, but with yellow instead of red. More "flash" to get their attention as it stands out more and makes them take a closer look.

Chris65LeMans 10-16-2018 11:38 AM

#2, but color the letters and pipe yellow. The others remind me of the ‘80’s Sears logo.

I'm glad you said that not me. ;) But... I was thinking it too. LOL

PunchT37 10-16-2018 12:18 PM

Number 2 with a color change should grab more attention.

There will be a reversed version for placement on white background. Adding 4 with white background to the poll would have caused a lot of indecision. Some viewers would like one logo over another just because of it being on a white background.

That hurts....in light of Sear's recent bankruptcy announcement. :(

If you look at the Sears logo, it's got very old block letters and the swoop is curved like it was hand written. Side by side, I don't see the similarity but that's why we posted these logos! :)

Ccass 10-16-2018 01:05 PM

I just uploaded a new image file that contains our original logo and the current logo.

61-63 10-16-2018 01:06 PM

This was the Sears logo from 1966 - 1984. I fail to see any similarities.

Here is the one they replaced it with from 1984 - 1994. A little closer, but not much.

TAKerry 10-16-2018 01:20 PM

I voted for #2, it stands out a bit from the others.

Firedup6975 10-16-2018 01:21 PM

#1 it’s crisp and clean and to the point. What the heck, now I’m gonna need a new Pypes hat. Lol

Bob's GTO 10-16-2018 01:23 PM

Number 2, but change the red to yellow.
I think that would really stand out on the side of a Pro Stock car.

68 461 Bird 10-16-2018 01:28 PM

I like the flames, leave it alone.

Chief of the 60's 10-16-2018 01:30 PM

I fail to see the Sears connection Chris.

DITTO!

Old Goat Racer 10-16-2018 03:57 PM

The P's look like a question mark on 1 through 4. No thanks.
I'll have to go with #5

sdbob 10-16-2018 05:31 PM

I liked 1. However after looking closer at the others and specifically 2. I think 2 portrays the exhaust image and draws me in.

cnc 10-16-2018 05:42 PM

Gotta go with 2... that caught my eye first and like the design...color change sure if so desired .....but it was the design that first caught my attention

Jim Moshier 10-16-2018 06:04 PM

I voted for #2 but think a yellow and gray borders with red letters

tekheavy 10-16-2018 06:34 PM

Numero Uno

Simple Man 10-16-2018 07:25 PM

Number 1

Firedup6975 10-16-2018 07:56 PM

Speaking of Pypes, Mike and I saw them and your box with the logo on it, on the Welder Up show on Discovery channel. :D

Royalties. :D maybe even some business.

400 4spd. 10-16-2018 09:07 PM

Number 2, with a blue crescent (pipe) and orange letters (exhaust). That pulls some of the colors from the original flamed version.

Half-Inch Stud 10-16-2018 10:03 PM

Chris,

1,3, or 4 but the 1st P is broke and needs fixed. would be great if the PYPES was slanted like the "350", "400" "SPRINT" Rocker Panel badges.
Number 1, Numero UNO with the fixes

5 is gay.
6 is metro gay

Sirrotica 10-16-2018 10:29 PM

Do it in neon outlined around the edges and the lettering, I'm just partial to neon look signs myself.

Thom San Soucie has some neon graphics that I have always liked. Link: http://www.americanautoart.com/Autocityhome.htm
Click on the link and go to the neon series artwork for a sample of what I'm talking about. I met Thom at Norwalk around 2010 and have always liked his neon stuff. I'm sure he'd do the logo in neon graphics. Just a suggestion that is different from everyone else's stuff

dhcarguy 10-17-2018 07:14 AM

#2, but outlined in yellow

Never really a good idea to try fixing something which isn't broken.

^This^

I like #5. It depicts flames coming from an exhaust pipe. What could be better ?

http://pypesexhaust.com/

TJ likes #1 best, followed by #5.

bird72 10-17-2018 11:09 AM

I like simple, hence #3. I kind of suspected most are different than me and prefer "fancier". Most of you probably have hood scoops too! And spoilers!

I like the flames to, and if it gets changed we will all need new hats. :D but I do get wanting to change it up a little.

I like #3

Thanks so much for your participation and contributions. A logo is really kind of a piece of art. As such, it lends itself toward wide interpretation. We all have different tastes.

Most brands update their logo after a while to avoid looking dated or stagnant or to better reflect a new direction the company is going in. . We are not exempt. . Sometimes logos are updated to hide a negative past. That's not the case with Pypes. Pypes has been quite successful. So realistically we could pick any new logo change and it probably would help a bit. The real help for our brand comes from making really good quality products at a fair price. We're starting a new campaign to promote that. The new logo will be part of the campaign. . We want to just freshen it up a bit. We don't want to risk losing our identty or look like we got bought out by someone.. Logo #2 was a popular pick but is very different from our original logo. Logo #1 is the closest to our old logo while adding a fresh look. . The voting both by our internal staff and here on PY seems to confirm both observations.

Thanks again for your opinions and interest! Last chance to get us to change our mind! :)

Chris

I personally like 5, next choice would be 1.

lust4speed 10-18-2018 05:02 PM

#2 but in yellow. The starbursts are a dated design left over from the 50's. Good if you're selling nostalgia, maybe not so good selling exhaust systems.

We never thought upgrading our logo would be so difficult. We REALLY didn't think that after the poll we'd still be scratching our heads. Although a lot of you voted for the large swoop logo, you can see by the results it fell a little short of one of the new logos. The fact that a lot of people liked the original logo better than the various new ones, kept us from pulling the trigger. Hence this newest design. Although some of you may still favor the original and some may favor the others presented, we think this latest logo most captures the classic design you've gotten use to. Even if it is not your favorite, we hope you grow to like it like you grew to like the original. :)

Sidponcho 10-24-2018 02:29 PM

5
BUT the S needs to be silver.
Lose the flames
Have the tailpipe tip cut at an angle.
