Getting key buzzer working

Putting the 72 lemans back to stock. Trying to get the key reminder buzzer working. Traced everything out. I have a 3 pin plug where the buzzer plugs in. It is above and in front of the fuse box. One pin is ground, one battery positive and one is ground from the key switch.
My problem I cannot find the plug-in buzzer. Original one is long gone. I searched everywhere on the internet. Any ideas where to get one or a modern seatbelt alarm I can wire in?

I think there are some on E-bay.

johnta1 02-01-2026 06:22 PM

The part that buzzes?

That is the horn relay I think? Does the horn work?

Horn Relay is the buzzer.
Relay should have four wires;

Red - Battery
Black - Horns
Green - Horn Switch
Pink - Key switch

The other side of the column key switch goes to the drivers door jamb switch

That was a great question and I have the same issue with my 68 GTO.
I did buy a schematic for my GTO and did see that the horn relay and buzzer work together and I bought a new relay [ not installed yet]
and notice that the person before me said that the horn did not work they installed a new relay and looking at the AMES catalog a relay for an older GTO was used with someone's version of how to wire it [ not correctly] so now I know for sure the new 1968 relay is the way to go.

Horn works perfectly. Horn relay is located under the dash near the headlight switch. It has 3 wires going to it. My research showed that in 72 they moved the horn relay to inside the car in this location. Can't find anything on the buzzer for 72.
There is a molded connector located above and in front of the fuse box with 3 wires, 12v, ground and ground from the key switch. My meter reads a ground with key in and door open. Clears when door shuts or key removed. It works perfectly. In search of the buzzer that plugs into this connector.

Only schematic I can find it 70-71 and does show it in the horn relay. Can't find schematic on 72. I bought the car from original owner in 1984 so am confident this is how the factory wired 72's

Schematic in 1972 Service Manual, also has a troubleshooting section for the buzzer. Section 12-4.

This is from an original factory 72 service manual in color.
The pink wire to the horn relay is very faint.

The pink wire may have its own plug. Is there an open terminal on the horn relay?

NPD had the buzzers.

Do you find a pink wire coming off the connector on the steering column?

A photo of this part might allow others with a 72 to compare/confirm

Same suggestion... a photo would help others understand what you are describing.

What wire colors enter this connector? Is nothing plugged into it? ???

Yes, it seems the pink wire did not copy but was there...

Seems a mismatch between the observations and both schematics. Could be:

- there's another terminal on the horn relay without a wire connected
- both schematics are wrong and there is indeed a separate buzzer on a 72

Definitely a confusing situation.

Does anyone else with a 72 have a horn relay under the dash and not on the firewall?

I added the missing pink wire (note that it is labeled) to johnta1's schematic.

From what I'm reading on the WWW, the 72 Horn relay is a one year only part and not reproduced.
The buzzer is part of the relay itself as in previous years
Your's may have burned contacts. It's not a hard job to open one up and inspect.
Or you can adapt the wiring to an earlier 68-71 relay which will work fine.

From Indymanjoe's photo, it looks like the 12 volt power is a round tab protruding from the relay? Does that tab connect to a 12 volt power stud?

The first set of pics indyman posted is what I am talking about. The black wire is ground the orange is battery voltage, and the pink one comes from the key switch. I am looking for the blue part in his pictures Like I said everything works as it should, just missing the blue module. I am guessing it was unplugged early in it's life because it was annoying. Figures 72 is a one year only. Wonder if chevys are like this for 72.

I miss the 80's when you can walk thru a junk yard and get any part you wanted for these cars.

Found this thread. First schematic is what I am talking about (buzzer assembly).

Maybe adapt a buzzer from a different car or find a "universal 12V buzzer"?

Here's some parts on eBay that look similar:

Found one, but don't want it that bad.

I didn't think of the seat belt buzzer, thought it was separate from the key buzzer.
Most people bypassed the seat belt interlock because it buzzed all the time.
The belt needed to be buckled to use the car.

That service bulletin probably showed how to bypass the seat belt system.
(didn't look at those pics in thread)

As was said earlier, use the horn relay?
If the horn works it must have a relay?

tigergto 02-03-2026 06:31 AM

The buzzer is so annoying, I disconnected the one on my 71 GTO when I owned it.

johnta1 02-03-2026 09:39 AM

Is your car automatic or manual?
Appears they have different setup.

Would be easy to use any buzzer or probably the horn relay.
Just need the pink wire to be the trigger for the relay or buzzer.

:)

My buzzer is timed, removed it in the 70’s. Now I love it.
