Gold YZ Formula up for auction again
I get Hemming's alerts (even though I'm not in a financial position to buy anything at this time) and the other day I received an alert that had this car:
LINK https://image.hmn.com/xU6OdA2uA14Du4...e/96555434.jpg I believe it was up for auction, or maybe listed by the same seller(?) last February - because I saved different/larger images on February 10th; I knew I saw this car previously because of the aftermarket accessory lamp(?) on the drivers side inner fender. https://image.hmn.com/Wtbcn8wvaMQnlT...e/96555439.jpg Maybe someone can clue me in - did it not meet reserve last year? |
If I had the money, would buy it, write a book with 100's of pics, then donate to the Ames foundation Museum.
I dislike the color of the Vinyl roof, but the car is a great original example. The electric seat back release is NOT a 1 off though. PDL got it as std. What was the last top bid? |
electric seat back release?
I will look at my other photos... I do not have record of what it was bid(?) to last year. EDIT: I don't have this option recorded in my other pictures - do you have a better shot of the dash to clearly read what the switches are for? (because I am guessing that is where it is) It does look to be a cool fairly original car. It also has the GM hood lock kit - as can bee seen by the hood release under the dash. (I bought one of those kits complete/NOS several years ago) |

The GM hood lock kit was a Dealer installed option only IIRC. The ones for F body's are pretty rare. I think Craig ( Norwood) made one for his car a while back.
The cable and under dash lever are still found for sale. A while back I think PY offered a generic kit. On this car There is a PDL Switch on dash, but looks like some other switch added to its left. 1970 models with the seat back release will typically have 2 door switches on the A pillar pad, which is a " double tall" area only found on a 1970. |
the hood lock kit was for sure not a factory option - I hope no one took that from my prior post.
It was for (according to installation sheet) GTO, T-37, Firebird and Grand Prix. My box (with one sticker on the box end, in the old GM colours) reads: Quote:

I have seen this car many times for sale it had different sales story but isn't a yz ra3 car if I remember correctly. It has a ys engine and #62 heads and 307 12 bolt.Have seen it for sale on ebay and in Arizona. I wad determined that my car came with the 307 but dug into it and it's not a true ra3. It's the engineers car that added dealership aircleaner plus swapted heads. It's nice but not 1 of 293. It's a clone.
|
Well this is good information!
I wouldn't call it a clone, a clone car is one which was built as a model it wasn't; If we call this a clone, then all 70-75 Formulas with the added RA bits would be blanketed as clones. Your post is a bit confusing, as it reads that your car came with 3.07's (which would be L78, not L74) - and those of us who have you & your car straight, know that it is an L74/M40/C60 car. |

HERE is a thread discussing this kit - but it has a different release than the one pictured in this car. Here is a quote from that discussion: Quote:
I just noticed that my kit has a different part number on the instructions; The part number on the instructions is 979093. |

if it has #62 heads, odds are they were installed because something was wrong with the original #13 heads (the two castings, for all intents and purposes are the same) - the #62 heads are the 1969 version of the 1970-#13 heads.
Both automatic, "72cc" (more like 80cc iirc) large valve 400 non-RA heads; Some call the #62 heads RAIII castings, because it has been suggested (iirc) that these heads were found on some auto/AC 1969-RAIII engines. So... It has replacement heads, and added ram air parts. |

Sounds like some of this was installed on the line possibly? If only he had ordered the RA IV engine? |
what I've learned from you guys, I call BS on that quote;
The gearing was nothing special, the electric seat release was a production item, and has been covered here, the hood release was never installed prior to the dealership. Headlight timer? - maybe that's what the giant thing is on the inner fender. |
Ram Air 3 formula

From my understanding this car was owned originally by a pontiac engineer who added ram air on a ys block. According to Arizona salesman. From there it went to.ebay and wad listed for @ 65k. Then seen on Facebook for 80k plus. No bs. Those are known facts. This car is very close color combo to mine and it got my curious. I think the red thing is an old school emergency light similar to a flair. It's a very nice car but it's a ys 2 bolt main with 1969 heads and dealership air cleaner. I think they said it has a hood release from inside the car. I call it a clone but not sure what to.call it. I know this if it was a base or formula turned into a trans am it would be a clone. Real ra3 are very low in production as everyone knows but what is it? A base formula non number matching true low mile Survivor.?

That was a good one Jonny ! Thank You !!!!! :D
And I mean that sincerely I about doubled over What it REALLY is - is a factory Pontiac reel out underhood light ,,,, from the mid 60's full size line. Half of the lense is red as a distress signaler (dual purpose) Its made similar to the reel out trunk lights of the mid 60's Pontiacs , but more scarce. The headlight timer remark was perfect timing for that appliance :D 62 heads would be off camber. The switch next to door locks "should be" rear window de-icer or defogger I don't believe this car is anything more than a vision. Looks repainted too. It is 35 minutes from me at Greensboro Auto Auction. If its still there in a couple weeks I will go investigate it. It is probably not going anywhere real soon unless a big sucker comes along. |
70 GTO could get factory tail light monitor that mounted on package shelf and had that whatchamacallit plastic tubing type light running to them.
I think the headlight sentenniel could be dealer installed only. But not sure it was out in 1970 yet. Not disputing it , but I have never seen any 70 Bird / TA with the door lock option. But will trust you guys on that. GTO offered it , with the seat back lock as a piggy back feature I think Power-Flow vents were available on 70 F-body too (non A/C cars) But never seen it on a car either. The switch would have been over there in the dash dummy plate where we see the door lock switch and the mystery switch on this car. |
