1962 BONNEVILLE SPECS/INFO;
 

Well my friend recently saw this car after I told him about it and to my surprise bought it.

Now we are searching for detailed information as far as Engine, Trans, Rear and such.
we're confident this car is very untouched but would like to know all or at least as much as possibly of what is correct for the year.

I've been looking but there isn't a whole lot that I've found

What LETTER is in the car's VIN?

Is the wide, rear quarter chrome ONE piece or TWO pieces?

Also interesting to see chrome block letter fender emblems (not gold) but the block letter grille emblem (not cursive script).

looking for air shocks for '62 Cat. the major brands list only front shock's if anyone knows where to buy them any info would be great!!
it belongs to my friend, i have a '64 Bonn with air shocks which the top of shock has different mounts! if your Bonn. needs them good luck!!

The car in your pictures is a Bonneville, I see it has factory A/C, tinted windows and the optional spinner hubcaps, otherwise it looks pretty typical. It has power brakes, you can't tell from the photos but it most likely had power steering as well. With a Hydramatic automatic transmission, the standard engine would have been a single four barrel carb, 303hp 389ci engine.

edit: I agree with the others, first thing to do is to get the PHS documents and the second thing is to pick up a full set of factory shop manuals. There were several volumes; one for the chassis and engine, one for the body, and I think in 1962 there were also separate volumes for the transmission and heating/air conditioning. You can find originals at swap meets, and reprints also available either in paper or on CD-ROM.

I can't tell for sure but the grille emblem looks like one off a 1961 car.

He has the PHS, also came with all the factory manuals and original window sticker he was just looking for numbers and codes to help determine if all was correct. I think we have enough to go on now.

I see what your saying but not sure about the grille emblem just did a quick search and both come up on '62 images but its not a '61?? I guess figuring it out is half the fun.

I don't think I've ever seen a decal like this.

I did a google image search on 1962 Bonneville grilles and found a number of pictures with both styles of grille emblems. Curious.

I looked at the PY online parts catalog, and could only find a single part number for a 1962 Bonneville grille emblem:

Description: PLATE, name (Bonneville)
Group: 1.303
Part number: 545471

There were other part numbers for the emblems on 1962 Tempests, Grand Prixs and P/8 (full size cars, which I assume just says PONTIAC in block letters like you would see on a Catalina.) I wonder if the two different style Bonneville emblems had to do with where the car was built - some assembly plants may have used one and other assembly plants used the other.

Same thoughts I was having, either a line/plant variation or a style option denote?

Yep. Cool. '63 was last year for that.

It was a federal requirement to put those on radios from 1953 to 1963.

RE: emblem, to the best of my (admittedly limited) knowledge on these cars, when you ordered a Bonne in '62 there was a no-cost 'choice option':
1) front fender emblems and rear tail panel letters that were either chromed or gold-plated.

1a) if you chose CHROME emblems, you got the CURSIVE SCRIPT grille emblem.
1b) if you chose GOLD emblems, you got the BLOCK LETTER grille emblem.

Over the past 20 years of watching for this, this is consistent with ALL of the original cars I have studied (both mine and others'). BUT, and this a junk-in-the-trunk-sized BUT, the production line wouldn't wait for a part shortage that day, and in my opinion it is completely plausible that the grille emblem from one package would have been used as a substitute if the udder wasn't available.


RE: Civil-Defense Frequencies: ALL factory-installed '62 DarkSider radios have the two IDs.

RE: Spare tires... the US Royal hide is very likely the as-delivered unit. VERY cool. Please tell your friend that if he has plans to put a set of five new tires on the rims that I would be interested in buying the spare and wheel and supply him with a bare replacement '62 wheel.

RE: my earlier question, what is the letter on the VIN (located in the driver's door jamb)?

RE: dealer & salesman decal, WOW. Never saw anyting like that. Suggest that he clear-coat over it if possible to preserve what's left.
