I just started driving my 80 Trans AM a little more since getting the car back together. Problem is, I have play in the steering. I already changed out all the steering components, except for the gearbox. So im leaning towards the gearbox needing adjustment. Do you turn the screw in or out to tighten it??

With all due respect, are you sure about 'out'? I thought 'in' way the way to go...

Two ways to do it, the easy, or the hard. The easy is to take it to a reputable shop, the hard is to get a shop manual and do it yourself. If all components are in good condition, you will get adequate adjustments, if you want new car response, you need new components, period. The Saginaw steering in your car is a good unit, and will last for years, but as it wears, the "feel" will go away, and the only way to get that new car handling, is to do a new rebuild of all components. The fact of our hobby, if you want modern feel and handling, you need to upgrade to modern parts. If you want 60's-70's-80's handling, then you will get what you've got. I love the response of newer cars, and if my 66 can handle half that well, I will be happy. But if I want madern handling response, I know I will have to spend some serious cash to get there. Choose your poison.

Rag joint maybe worn.

No offfence, but what's a "rag joint"?? Iv'e been working on cars for years, and never heard of it.

the rag joint is the rubber piece that connects the steering column to the steering box.

Oh, ok. I guess I just refer to it by another name. It's new too. I guess i'll just replace the whole damn gear box. I tried adjusting it, but there is still some play. With the steering wheel locked, everything is tight, except for the gearbox...

ryche what did you ever find out about your steering? I am having the same problems and
i have replaced the steering box. Just wondering.

Well, unfortunatly the rag joint I installed came apart. Since it was under the steering shaft cover, I hadnt checked it since I put it together. I guess I got a bad one or something. I havent replaced it, but Im sure thats the problem..
