I have a 3 speed manual transmission out of a '67 LeMans Sprint and I need to identify it.Is this the only 3 speed manual trans. that came out in 1967?It has a large C-4 cast on the outer caseing.I was told there were Dearborn and Saginaw transmission made that year.Thanks Tim

If it has a sheetmetal plate on top it is the Dearborn toploader, fully synchronized and made by Ford.

And yes, a Saginaw was available. The Dearborn was the "heavy duty" option, from what I've read.

I thought the ford 3 speed was only used with a HO option. Maybe it was ordered special for the 326 ?!
Hang on to it, if it is the ford 3 speed.

The manual shows the Dearborn as the heavy duty option and it is obviously the Ford toploader. The Saginaw is the other 3 speed available, standard design. I had a '67 Sprint and it had the Saginaw.

OK guys..I found out for sure its not the heavy duty Dearborn 3 speed trans!My Restoration Guide states that they made 3 speed Muncie transmission also?

I will try to find some more codes on the tranny as I clean it up.So far here are the date codes and part numbers I found.

GM 6
Part # 3858988 or its 3858986 (the last number is hard to read).date code of C216 on the housing.
Part #3873886 on the tail shaft with date code of C236

3-Speed trans ID

The Hurst catalog has a nice section on transmission identification. If you go to:

and select the Hurst transmission ID chart link you will get an excellent pictoral and text description of various autos, 4-speeds, and 3-speed transmissions.

This allowed me to identify my 67 Lemans 3-speed as the Ford version

Thanks Steve....I went to the Hurst Site,but could not pull up any links to identify different transmissions!I have Web TV and it's limited to what can be pulled up so thats probably why I can find the link your talking about?So far I know its not a Dearborn trans.,just not sure if it is a Saginaw or a Muncie.

As far as I have been able to find out & all of the sprint manuals I have parted out over the years (approx 12 or so) They all came with saginaw's eather the 3-speed or the 4-speed styles.
The only exeption to this is the 69 4-speed Lemans & Tempest's that came with an M-20 Muncie and I have only seen 2 of these. The 69 Sprint Firebird's 4-speed's still had the saginaw.
So if it is the original trans, and it has a cast irom case, 99% chance it is a saginaw. But I have learned to never say never over the years.
Hope this helps, there is not very much info on sprints out there. I had to prove the muncie in my 69 tempest was stock years ago to a very unreceptive GTOAA judge back in the 80's

From the link I posted select "on line catalogs" and select the Hurst link. That will allow you to get either catalog sections or the entire PDF catalog.

The section you want is 5 fron the top, "Hurst Transmission ID Chart"

Dearborns were put behind V8s with floor shifts. Not needed in OHC6s or column shifts.

Hurst made aftermarket linkage kits(rod & levers) for all of the transmissions that the Pontiac A-body cars used.
