I have a 76 Firebird with a 400 ps, a/c and the 'big' 100 amp Alternator. But seems to have alignment issues. Looks to be rigged by the previous owner. Does anyone have pics and part number's that are on the pulleys and brackets to get this back to stock. Also has some sort of adjustable idler located on the pass head to adjust the belt for the alt, ps or A/C ????

Idler pulley is for the alternator belt. I believe the pulley numbers are, Crankshaft Pulley 481038 YB (for A/C) and 480509 XS (A/C belt pulley) and Water Pump Pulley 481040 XT. I only see a casting number on the aluminum piece 485991 (I have the complete set off a '73 motor).

The idler is the same.
The #30 bracket I have doesn't have the adjustment slot. It's a non adjustable bracket. Also missing the #13, but have seen one of those somewhere in my storage extra parts bin.
My #20 bracket is different too?

I guess it's the 80 amp. Just that the brackets on the car are different then the pics he shows. Of course, that's probably the GM 'one size fits all' pic GM supplies.

OK, Ken. Do your brackets look like this? Of course, one bracket is missing, as well as all the bolts, spacers, alternator, etc. so I can't mock it up.

Thanks, looks like what I got. Just that the person that had this 76 I bought before me must have lost the spacers and had a bunch of washers where spacers should be. etc, etc.
No back brace for the alt. but then it had a performer intake and that bracket might not bolt to that manifold and he left it off.

Need to check the pully #'s too as the washers might have had the pulley alignment off.

Formulafr, it was a joke. You had typed "rear defrogger" instead of rear defogger. And he really was asking if you had the blower motor type or the electric grid type.

The 1st pic Held for Ransom showed is the same stuff he shows in his other pic.

You will need that #30 bracket if you don't need it.
They mounted the alternator sideways instead of 'up and down'.

John. The pic #30 shows an adjustable alt bracket.
His personal stash shows the same bracket I got. Non adjustable.
Once the Big alternater is bolted in place there is no way it will move. Have the engine out and fixing a pan leak in the car when I bought it so When I go back together I will check to see if the idler will line up with the alt. It was in the trunk with the A/C parts & brackets.
The way I got the car the belt was around the crank/water pump and alt with no adjustment and a bit sloppy.

Ken. I assume you know the obvious, the idler bracket has the adjustment arc in it. As with the #30 bracket being incorrect, I also wonder if the #13 bracket is correctly pictured (if even needed).

Yes I assumed that the arc in the idler will be used to adjust the alt. Like I said, I have to get the engine back in the car. I noticed all this on dis-assembly and wanted to make sure I had all the pieces when I put it together. Didn't want to do it twice or wait 2 months to find parts and info. Thanks.

Joe, saw your other post on needing brackets. Are you looking for the 80 amp brackets or the '71-75 or '76 normal brackets/pulleys? This set I'm keeping for now, unless I have another set with the spacers and such. I will keep you in mind if I do find another set around here.

Finally set the 400 back down in the chassis and got all the brackets and pulleys lined up.

I got a 75 Factory maunal with a 76 supplement and a CD disc with pics and info. But they only show the length for 2 and both are wrong for the 80 amp deal. At lease to line up my pulleys.

I think there are 4 spacers used? Does anyone have the overall length of these spacers and there location for future reference and to make sure I got them all?

BTW: the 76 Firebird 80 amp alt doesn't have the adjustable bracket shown in the pic, just a hole to lock it in place at that locqation. The idler does the adjustment. Thanks for the help.
