I am looking at buying a 70 Trans am and have been researching it a little and have some unanswered questions.
- green interior on a t/a with white body, is this common?
- it is advertised as an automatic car with 3.90 posi gears in it, was that an option?
- the first numbers in the vin tag says it is a trans am but on the body tag it says it is a regular firebird, the car is from the NOR plant. I have heard that the cars that came from this plant had all the body tags saying that they were firebirds, no matter what. Has anyone else come across this?

From what I know, all T/As in '70 had blue or black interiors.

FWIW - My 1970 Trans Am came out of the Norwood plant with a T/A tag.

My Van Nuys 70 TA has red interior and my friends Van nuys lucerne blue car has sandalwood interior...a phs verified 70 with green interior would be interesting to say the least.

#1 Green interior on a Trans Am would be pretty rare. You could get any color you wanted but most people opt'ed for black, blue, or white.

#2 With the 12 bolt rear end you could get some pretty high(numerically) rear end gears. The PHS dealer invoice would tell you if the car came from the factory with 3.90 gears.

#3 Norwood, OH cars the Fisher body tag has the basic Firebird 22387 code and WS4 code below for Trans Am. Keep in mind that sometimes the assembly line worker was lazy or goofed up so everything on the cowl tag is not foolproof.

So you're saying the cowl tag on your Norwood,OH built '70 Trans Am starts out "ST 70 22887NOR" instead of "ST 70 22387NOR" and doesn't have the WS4 code below?

I know the 70-71 Van Nuys cars have a slightly different cowl tag and T/As had 22887 VIN numbers and no WS4 code but I have never seen a Norwood car like that.

- A green interior was one of the available colors for 1970. There was a car like the one
you are looking at for sale around here a while back. It was a white car with a green interior
and reported to be documented as original. I have seen white with brown interior and white with red interior. While non of these were common, it certainly was possible.

-Performance gearing was an option, 3.90 could
certainly been one of those options.

-All of the Norwood cars I have owned showed a
Firebird VIN and then WS4 to denote a Trans Am on the cowl tag.

I have seen a couple of white T/As with green interiors.

One was a 71 4-spd car, another was a 72 auto with a/c, and the third was a white column shift auto with no a/c.

I have not seen a 70 T/A with green, but I have seen a white Formula with dark green interior and column shift.

Never have run across 3.90's in a '70 1/2 T/A. Early magazines tests of a 70 1/2 RAIV T/A showed a 3.90 gear, & the car prob had that oddball 12 bolt ratio as it was a preproduction-engineering prepped car. 3.90's in a 70 1/2 T/A housing, would have to see the dated original GM gears & a buildsheet to believe it...

Colorwise, have ran across one green interior auto '71 T/A, one red interior-column shift auto '70 1/2, bunch of 70 1/2 sandlewood interior T/A's.

I will verify this tonight. Could be that I misread the '223' as '228'. The cowl tag had been painted over and a 'drip' may have me all messed up (amongst other things) http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_razz.gif I'll let you know.

The 3.90 was N/A on a production 70 T/A

The factory had 6 - 70 T/A's with green interior. 9 with brown interior those two are the rarest. Sandlewood was next, etc.

Hey Breed, where did you get the info on the numbers of specific colored interiors? You said Sandlewood is the next rarest after green and brown, any idea how many sandlewood interiors? Mine is a 70 T/A, lucern blue with the deluxe sandlewood. Also, any idea how many of the 4 speed cars came with factory a/c?

[I'm told 11 cars had blue / sandlewood ,right now 3 good vin's out there on that color.
