I hope someone here can give me some guidance. My brother found a '73 Formula 455 HO car today for sale and he is very interested in buying it. I didn't get many details but it is supposed to be a clean car, probably a 4-speed, and it is white. He is going to look at it in the next day or so.

Can anyone give me some idea of what this car might be worth? I know I didn't provide much information (and he hasn't seen the car yet - this is all information from the seller) but I wanted to at least give him some ballpark numbers before he gets there to look at it. Things are changing too fast with these cars and I haven't really kept up with the current selling prices lately to offer him my opinions.

Also, does anyone have the production numbers for this car?

There was no 455 HO in 73. Either standard 455 or the SD455.

I don't think there is a breakdown between the engines for the Formulas other than for the SD engine.

Being a 455 and 4 speed it is probably rare.

Thanks for the information. I wasn't sure about the 455 HO but that is the info my brother passed on to me so I just repeated it here. I knew someone would let me know if that was not correct and I will be sure to let my brother know that.

I believe there were 730 formulas built in 73 with the standard 455, and 43 sd cars. You might try the formula source web side! I haven't heard what these cars are going for but would like to know myself since I have one. Saved it from certain death!

You are right about production. There were 10, 166 Formulas built in 1973. Here is the breakdown:

<LI>43 of them were SD's
<LI>730 were Y code 455 engines (250 hp/370 ft lbs)
<LI>9,393 were Formula 350 or Formula 400[/list]
I bought my '73 Formula 455 last summer for $12.5k. It is a rust free CA car with automatic, AC, PW and deluxe interior. I would think that a range of $10k to $15k for a #2 or #3 car would be reasonable. I have seen people ask $25k for a #1 car but I doubt they got it.

Depending on condition (I assume it is a running driver at least, not a basket case) I would GUESS somewhere between 5-7K upwards to 25-30K for a flawless model.

The owner told my brother that the car recently had a complete restoration though we don't know specifically what was done. The car was supposed to have been garage kept most, if not all, of the time since new so I am expecting it to be in very good condition.

Based on this my guess is a price somewhere in the teens to low 20's is probably realistic?

That sounds about right to me price-wise, but the word "restoration" can have wildly different meanings depending on who you ask.

Definately check it out and check for the correctness of everything.

I was told years ago that only around 250 of the 730 Formula 455's made in 73' were 4-speed cars. Let me know if Im off on that figure? Mines a 73' 455 was 4-speed, now TH400.

Make sure you check the 5th digit in the vin# for a Y for 455 & X for SD455. I've seen a few Formula 400's with a 455 that tried to go as a Formula 455 in the last 2 years.

I thought the real catch (and this as why '73 W66/455 production was so low), was that the 455 could only be had with a th400??

On the sad side, there was a '73 W66/455 car crushed here a couple years ago - by the same idiots responsable for crushing a '70 455 'HO' GTO (at/coupe)... but I understand the '73 Formula's tags still exist!?
