Possible to (temporarily) link a 2-speed column shifter to TH400?

Yes I know it's absurd, but I just want to get the damn thing on the road after 17 years of not running. Spent all my money on engine/tranny/exhaust--just want to drive it for awhile and delve into the console/shifter later. Anyway, its a 1967 LeMans with shift on the column. Any hope?

i want to say that i dont have a lemans

but i would think that you could cobble something together, and just not be able to use the 1 st gear setting you should have

i would just make sure you get all the lever legnths correct so that when the shifter says drive the trans is actually all the way in drive, same with park and reverse and the rest

I think it would work, you just wouldn't have low or second on the tranny.
Drive would work along with reverse and park.

Oh man my 1st venture into the world of hotrodding without 1st gear??? Ok forget it, another month of work and more money I don't have. damn.

OK I'm being an idiot--just put it in Drive and let it go--just wont be able to shift through the gears myself.

It worked for me.

been there, done that

The 2-speed linkage bolts right up to the TH400, the only gear you won't be able to grab manually would be first. No biggie, she'll drive just fine.

Half-Inch Stud 01-12-2006 06:22 PM

Well sure. With the adjustment favoring Park, it might not reach the 1st gear slot on the TH400 internal detent.

b-man got there before me...I really ought to read the responses before responding.

When we put a 389/ TH 400 in my friends 68 Lemans, the column shifter would go through all the gears. Low position was 2 and "below low" was 1. I guess if he had a shift indicator from a column shift 68 GTO, everything would have been perfect.

In my 67 with TH400 I can go through all the gears, and it started off as a 2 speed on the column. Drive is just as far a it will go to the right.

Worked for me...like B-man says, 1st binds some, but I had headers.

I put a TH 350 in my column-shifted '67 Cutlass convertible that originally had a 2 speed automatic. I have no problem manually shifting to all gears. (I just haven't found a bracket and linkage set that will let me connect the kickdown cable to my '67 Quadrajet throttle shaft, but that won't be a problem with a TH 400...)

Wow thanks for all the experience and support; its good to know every little problem I come across, there's been a hundred others been there first.
