Well, you figure a well built powerglide, is an awesome bracket racing tranny, since you only have one shift point, low to drive. I had one in my 65 malibu and used to wind the first gear up to about 60MPH, then chirp to second, and be clear up to 115MPH, which was sadly it's top speed...
TH350 is a standard 3 speed, I have never hurt one, but I have seen many of them fry at the drag strip.
TH400 is a strong 3 speed, that with a kit can be ran pretty dang hard. <I heard if you want to use a line lock, to use a TH400, that a line lock can grenade a TH350, but not sure if it's true, I've never used a line lock>
