Time for new front disk brakes. What brand?

I think it is time for me to put on new front disk brakes. I think I would feel a lot safer driving in it.

Question:
What is a good brand for front disk brakes kit?

Did you do the work yourself? I would like to give it a try.

Would NAPA sell anything like that?

How much does it cost.

Is it the same bolt pattern as original drum brakes?

Here's a good starting point for you.

I did mine myself using parts supplied by Ol' Pinion Head. The hardest part was the lines. Despite several attempts to get pre-bent lines I wound up fabricating all the lines myself. They have probably gotten the problems with line fitment worked out since I did mine.
You could get all the parts from a salvage yard if you have the time to look and probably do it for less than $500.
If you want a self contained kit I'd go with one from SSBC or MP Brakes.
Yes, the bolt pattern will be the same as long as you use GM style rotors.

dbones, What kit do you get? The standard or the most expensive kit? I will only be driving the car. I will not be doing any extreme road racing.

I think I will go with a new kit and not one from a salvage yard. There are not a lot of good salvage yards aroung here.

FB,
I kinda pieced mine together - bought parts separate, fabricated brake lines, etc. From what I can see, SSBC (the link I orignally sent) has the complete kit. Our host also offers a kit. You should be able to do the work yourself.

I guess I would compare my set-up to the standard kit. I do not have power brakes, and I occasionally take the car down the track. It runs 12.2's and I haven't crashed thru the fence at the end of the track yet.

FB,

One more thing - I'm not 100% sure, maybe someone else can jump in - but I think you need 15" rims on the car for disc brakes to clear. If you have 14"s better check first.

I have 15" cragar ss rims. Did you put new bushings on while you did the brakes. I need new bushings also. This sounds like a good time to do it.

I only have a jack and jack stands. Is this all you used to do the work?
I do not have access to a auto lift.

Is there a good web site or book on how to do this process? Do the brake company you buy from have good instructions?

Stay away from The Right Stuff Detailing, they are sold through PY. I had nothing but problems with their kit and dealing with them. If you like parts that don't fit and you enjoy shipping parts back and forth several times, go ahead and use them! Oh yeah, they didn't supply any directions, not that men need them mind you....

DBONES152 03-19-2006 12:07 PM

FB,

Nice Looking Car!! Never put 2 & 2 together that I was the one that asked you about the 15x8 Cragar with 5" backspacing.

Yes I did all the work with jackstands. Considering retrojoe's post, I think the smart thing for you to do is give SSBC a call and find out from them what kind of instructions and exactly what parts come with the kit.

Fullback66 03-19-2006 06:56 PM

thanks for the advice.
Retrojoe, I saw the disk brakes in PY. I am glad you told me.

Bones, I think I have been hit in the head to many time. I thought I wrote you back before about the rims.

I think I will give ssbc a call before I order anything.
thanks

I used the SSBC kit on my '69. Their instructions were pretty good. I bent my own lines, which I think made the job easier. Almost everyone I've heard of that tried to use prebent lines on a conversion had to send them back or rebend themselves.

Yes, it is a great time to redo the whole front suspension, including bushings- it's almost all the way apart anyhow. ;)

When I did mine I only had a gravel floored carport, so yes it is something that can be done with the car sitting on jackstands- just remember- SAFETY!

I would say the front disc conversion was the biggest improvement I've done as far as drivability.

I did both a fron suspension rebuild and a disc brake conversion last winter on my 67. I got the brake kit from ebay and the suspesnion stuff from perfomancesuspension.com. I did all work myself with the excpetion of taking the car to the local Midas to bleed my brakes and align the front end.

yep, the repro dust sheilds apparantly will not clear 14" rims. They are also junk. buddy of mine was torquing down the upper mounting bolt and ripped the metal.

as far as instructions, if you don't have a chassis service manual, you shouldn't be doing work on your car. it will have everything you need pertaining to brakes, along with just about every other aspect of your car. get one, the price won't break the bank and you will learn something about your car

66 gto front disc brakes

the guys are right. i changed my 66 over and used a kit from lisbon bowtie in lisbon ohio. the entire kit was like $675.00. the instructions were good and they have a tech line that you can call and actually talk to someone that knows what you are referring to.i to ordered prebent stainless lines. this is a no no unless you have the body off,i had just put mine back on,so we sent them back and made our own.
yes,you definetly need 15" rims or the wheel will lock up on the caliper.i'm speaking from actual experience. however, the instructions told me this but as someone said instructions are not for men.
good luck

I did mine myself with the car on jackstands. The kit i pieced together from NAPA as I went along. Do the front suspention bushings while you have everything apart. I just got a prebent line kit for a 67 GTO disk and had to swap two fittings, nothing major. I have 14 inch tires and everything fits, but you have about an 1/8 inch clearance

Is there any modifing? Or, Is it a straight bolt off and bolt on without having to cut or drill any new holes?

66 GTO DISC BRAKES

THE KIT I GOT FROM LISBON BOLTED RIGHT UP. THE ENTIRE CHANGE OVER INCLUDING THE MASTER CYL AND SPINDLES TOOK ABOUT 3 HRS.NO HOLES TO BE DRILLED ETC. I WILL SAY THAT IT WAS THE ONLY THING THAT DID BOLT RIGHT IN.

Fred,
Do you have a web site for Lisbon? Were did you get the brakes from?

that would be nice. i live near scarebird and have heard great stuff. i was having second thoughts tho about using factory stuff but then remembered how awesome my 6000 pound truck stops now with 4wdb that are factory parts. i am going to go ahead and get the brackets from scarebird and then buy the rest at napa or where ever. my truck stops on a dime and my tempest should give back change. and it should be cheap cheap cheap.

ps. when i did my brake conversion i read to just saw/break off the protective "dust sheild" or whatever it is as it just collects crap. i have been running my truck off road in all kinds of crap and have never had an issue as disc brakes are self cleaning anyway. throw them away or dont waste your money buying them
