Tire size Help Needed on 70 GTO[PLEASE]
 

I bought 16x7 and 16x8 rally 2s from wheel vintiques the backspacing is 4 1/2 for the rear and 4" for the fronts I only want To put Radial T/As on the car. What size tires will fit to fill the wheel wells up.

You'd be doing your car and you a diservice with Radial TA's....those tires suck.


I'm guessing you'll only be driving it in the summer and fall and spring, and sometimes in the rain.

I would say 245/50/16 would work well.

Unless you spend all your time on a dragstrip or riding around in the snow, the T/A's are fine and have everything else covered looks wise.

Sadly, Radial T/A's aren't made in sizes that will work for the wheels you bought for your car.

If your looking for rwl or blackwall? the only rwl bfg 16's are 265/60, 275/65 and 285/60 all of which are way to tall (28.5-30.1").

255/55-16's would be about the right size, but they're only available from a couple of manufacturers. No T/A's in a good size for 16's on your GTO :(

Probably 245/50 front, and 265/50 rear. You might be cutting it close with the 245s (measure, measure, measure), but your only other choice is 225, and that is mucher shorter than stock, so it might not look right.

When chosing rims and tires:

1. Decide what brakes your using for your minimum rim. General rule of thumb brake rotor plus 4. Meaning if you have 13" brake rotors, a 17" rim should clear. Always verify with rim and brake manufacturers.
2. Look at the tire height. Do you want them the same or staggered?
3. Determine the maximum width tire that will fit. Assume around a 1/2" clearance on each side for suspension movement.
4. Determine the availabilty of sizes that fit your needs. Best to pick a very popular size so that many choices are available should a tire brand discontinue that size. For example a 245/50/16 was production on many cars (80s-90s camaros, firebirds, etc). For example, a 305/40R16 once was available only through Michelin and was later discontinued.
5. Starting with your existing rim and tire for baseline, determine what the new width and backspace is needed to get the tire placement correct.
6. Some manufacturers only allow for 1/2" backspacing increments, so you may have to compromise tire location. Adjust your tire size accordingly. In other words, if you calculated needing 4.75" backspace and only 4.5" is available, you're pushing the tire out more and you'll need to pick a width that is about one or two sizes narrower to avoid rubbing.

LOTS OF CHOICES WITH THE 15 IN RIMS.. OUR COMBO IS 15X7 WITH 4 IN BACK SPACE ON THE FRONT. TIRE SIZE 235X60X15. THE REARS ARE 15X8 WITH 4.5 BACK SPACE AND 275X60X15. IF I HAD TO DO AGAIN I WOULD DO WHAT YAKKER DID. PUT 275X50X15 ON THE BACK. WE PUT COOPER COBRAS ALL AROUND WITH RAISE WHITE LETTERS.

sounds good but wouldnt the combo yakker did make the front tires taller?

By .2". About the diameter of a toothpick. No one will ever notice. Done all the time.

Finally got my camera to work. Pics of our tires. 235x60x15 up front and 275x60x15 in the rear. Should have gone with a 275x50x15 in ther rear. The 60 is just too tall

I have 275/50-15's on my lemans and they are about perfect.. if i had an aftermarker wheel with less backspacing, i could most likely go another inch or so wider. I had 275/60's on it before ,and like you just said, i think they were too tall, and i also like the 50's being about an inch wider than the 60's

I got the 15s and went with the 235s in the front and 275/ 50s in the rear on 8s and the fit was Purfect. Thanks alll who posted
