Painting Advice
 

Not a Pontiac fender, but....

I have purchased a couple of new fenders for my Jeep CJ7. They have the black pimer (e-coat?) on them. Do I need to sand this stuff completely off then re-prime? Or do I need to scuff it, them prime over that before painting? Or do I need to scuff the ecoat and paint right over that?

I have never heard that it needed to be sanded off I have always heard that the primer is a good rust inhibiter, may want to rough it up and spray your choice of primer I am a very strong believer that you want to use the same kind of primer and paint if you can. hope this helps

Leave the e-coat. You have a multiple choice regarding paint proceedure.

You "CAN" scuff the e-coat with a red scotch brite and paint right over it, but not best choice. Cheapskate method.

Normally - shops scuff the e-coat with a red scotch, remove imperfections with some 220 or 320 paper, then use a non-sanding primer sealer, then follow with selected paint products.

"BEST" and most expensive, you can sand e-coat then follow with a catalyzed primer surfacer. Wait a day, sand again, begin selected paint process(es).

I'm guessing you are going to paint it entirely before installing it. If not - at least paint the jambs before installing.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Probably will go with the non-sanding primer. The fenders will be the best part of the Jeep at this point of the build-up.
