78 TA carb
 

I am in the process of strocking my 400 with alot of $$$$$$ go fast parts from BUTLER. I went with a aluminum intake and was told that I should go with an early 70's carb to get rid of the smog junk. Would this be worthwhile or just keep what I have? Thanks

After reworking the idle circuits Cliff Ruggles prefers the late models.

Use what you have. In my opinion they are a better carb as far as the range of tuning ability. They also feature a part throttle adjustment that the early carbs don't.

Recommend the book, "How to rebuild and modify Rochester Quadrajet carburetors" by Cliff Ruggles. Great explanations and photos.

Personally, I think its worth the money to have a guy like Cliff set up your carb. There is a guy like Cliff here in Green Bay, that set up the quadrajet for my 68. He used all the specs of my engine, & has all the right equipment to set it up right. That engine could not run better. From what I understand, the carbs are fussy about vacuum, but when they are set up right for your engine, they are fantastic. I think the term "quadrajunk" came from people that never got them right.
