Aluminum intake
 

Does any know who sells stock style aluminum intake manifolds for '65 389 Bonneville. also I need a plug & run electronic distributor for the same.....Larry

1965 and and up all use the same intake bolt pattern. The closest thing to stock would be an Edelbrock Performer intake. I can sell you one, but my question would be why do you want an aluminum intake? The stock cast iron intakes work so well in a big heavy street car.

My cast iron one has corosion , deeply pitted in the ports and leaking.Thinking that I have to replace it I thought I'd go with the lighter aluminum just so long as the stock AFB carb fits with no problems.....Larry

My advice would be to post an ad in the appropriate 'Parts Wanted' forum and get yourself another good 1965 stock intake. That way everything goes together the way it should, just like it came from the factory.

Otherwise you end up with the headache of trying to hook up a choke, throttle bracket, etc to a Performer intake. You'll find it ends up being a lot of work and the results are not all that clean looking, plus it won't run any better than the stock intake.

You won't notice any difference by removing a measly 20# pounds off your heavy car, so a lightweight aluminum intake really offers no advantage in that respect.

B-man's on the right track about just finding another stock intake. The time and effort to put an aluminum one on there aren't really justifiable for your car and combination. If you are interested in putting another stock intake on and have problems finding one, I could probably help you out.

I'll throw my nickels worth in as well. Stick with the stock intake and carb. Mine runs better and pulls harder the way Pontiac built it.

I am curious as to why you guys feel the cast iron works better than an aluminum intake? I put an Edelbrock ep4b on my 64 389 GP and noticed an improvent in performance. Is there something I am missing?

dennis, the 65 up intakes have better flow than the 64/ down units. rocky rotella did a flow test in hpp a while back and the comaprision between the performer and the oem unit were almost identical in numbers.

Denis, your car would run even better without that cheesy 'Buick style' decal on the air cleaner. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.

Jerry H, I am with you on this one! And again Denis do not take it personal! I am 54 years old and have worked on Pontiacs since I was 15. The only cars I remember seeing in those days with those decals on the aircleaner were Buicks. Even my wife knows this!! I see a lot of Pontiacs these days with those decals and it just makes me wonder when they were made and why people started using them on Pontiacs. I wish someone could come up with an old an original picture to substantuate the proof that Pontiac used them!! Like Jerry H said "just a personal peeve"!

You know, I thought I would catch some grief from someone because I had that cheesy sticker on the air cleaner! That photo was taken last year. But just to put your minds at ease, the sticker is long gone. And believe me, no offense taken.

as to the second part of the question does any have a opinion on Plug and run electronic distributor,I had a Pertronix breakerless unit,which gave 5yrs and about 50,000mi trouble free operation before it burned out.I just thought that complete distributor would be better as I don't care for originality points I am more concerned with efficient operation and trouble free cruising....Larry

mushie, are you looking to convert to HEI? If so, ProForm's 66953 is an excellent choice.
