who has read this and who thinks its worth a try?

please read and tell me, i think i might do this so that i can have at least something rather than PRIMER.

I read it.....got the mag in the mail the other day. Its pretty interesting, sounds like a lot of work.
Here is a basic rundown.........
They used Rustoleum Stops Rust (quart cans, not spray cans) and rolled it on using the high density foam rollers. They mixed it roughly 50%-60% paint and 40%-50% thinner............consistency of whole milk or a little thicker. Roll on one coat....looks like crap, some runs and a lot of little bubbles. You can use low air pressure, blowing on it or whatever to get rid of the bubbles. The first coat must dry before adding coat #2. Then you wet sand with 600 grit to get all of the imperfections out because there will be some small runs etc. Then you repeat......2 more coats then wet sand.......then again with 2 coats and wet sand. Repeat the process until you have ample coverage....could be 6 coats could be 10.......they used 6 coats total. After the final coat wet sand with 600 grit and then with 1500 grit. After that you have to buff and polish it out.

no need for spray booth
easy cleanup
easy way for your kids to help
good conversation later
easy to touch up

Cons......
time consuming
labor intensive
only a basic enamel finish
no metallic colors


Im going to try it myself just to see the result. Im just going to try it on a small piece of sheet metal.

Oh......EACH coat must be dry before you apply the next coat. Can recommends 24 hours.
Duplicolor has a new system out.......a laquer I believe. Ready to use right out of the can, supposed to be fairly easy for the DIY people. They have the primer, paint and clear. Its available at most parts stores like Autozone, Advance etc. Advance has it for $19 per quart......and there are some decent colors. I may end up trying that as well.

Im curious about the roll on deal........Im going to use an old fender I have in the shop and try it. If anyone is interested I will start a new post in the Body SHop section. I will post the steps and pics of each step as I go. Since the paint has to dry for 24 hrs between coats it will be a LONG process. I figure I will do a coat each day after work.......so it will be 2 days of paint and a day of wet sanding times 3 or maybe times 4 depending on how many coats I will need to use for ample coverage.

im down because i think i might go this route. at least i wont have the ugly primer look. it will make the car look as if it has a paint job, but that is like 10 years old an needs to be redone. thas ok with me.

A factory paint job is about 1.5 to 2.0 mils. The roll on stuff sounds like it would be very thick, which could lead to cracking and crazing on down the line............

never paint a car with a brush and roller.

I open to anything.If you wet sand it you can make anything smooth.I painted my car myself never did before.I just used a sears cheapy gun.Painted mine polar white.Just don't try to spray a metellic the first time you paint.If you use a solid color and the block sand it,it looks great.The paint from PPG was 160 total.It was a one part paint,no clear.It beats driving with primer.

If you guys read on the thread over on Moparts, alot of them are using Brightside boat paint, the gloss qualities are better with less work.

Hey Colin, can you do a dark color rather than white.

I've been reading that thread for about a year. I can't wait to try it on one of my projects. If you read through all the posts at once it will take about 24 hours of time.

As everybody knows paint and bodywork are by far the most expensive steps in a restoration. Guys like me who just have a daily driver are down for this type of thing. And really how bad can it be? Henry Ford painted millions of Model T's and A's with a roller too. :)

I may just skip the Rustoleum and Brightside and go to Tractor supply and get some tractor paint. They have over 20 differant colors. I'll stay away from the J.D. green for sure.

I will probably use dark grey.

By the way, I read some other magazine article, right before the one with the guy using a roller and rusty paint who used brushes and a special paint. Something about a tractor paint and wet sanding it which looked really pretty nice when he was done. Where is this article? I've been looking for it since the day after I read it. Anyone know which one I mean??? Thanks.. Mike

Stop it I resemble that remark!!!!!! seriously I did that when I was a kid. painted my Sprint with tractor paint. took FOREVER to harden up. Case gray IIRC. That roller thing has been going around the internet for a few years now.:ranger:

Primer all the way!

I don't want to say the painting is the easy part, but compared to the body work it is. If any of you guys are going to do this, put a lot of time & attention into smoothing out your panels first. What you were able to hide with low luster/flat primer will stand out like a sore thumb with high gloss paint. The more shine you have the more imperfections you will see.
That Buick looks very good considering.
