61-62 FRONT BRAKE DRUM STUD REMOVAL

Does anyone out there have the answer on removing and replacing the front brake drum wheel studs on 61-62 cars? This is not easy. In the past I've tried to smack them out with a hammer and ruined the drum. Also tried heating with the same result. Apparently years ago, there was a specialized tool to cut around the stud to remove. Any help would be much appreciated... Bill

Removing wheel studs fromdrums/axles, etc.............

Heat and a hydraulic press works the best. I have also used my $50 Harbor Freight 1 1/2 ton arbor press for this task. Use a short piece of thick wall pipe to support the area around the stud.

The thick wall pipe is important. The first one I did unsuported bent like melting butter under the press.

Back in the good ole days there must have been a trick in getting these out. A couple of years ago, I ruined two perfectly good drums. Someone told me a while back to grind off the head of the stud and it will drive out with a punch. Any other ideas out there. Thanks... Bill

cut off tool or angle grinder cuts flush with drum and then punch is the easiest.
