What is the proper setting for points on a 64 326 tempest? I have never had a car with points before so its all new to me.

use dwell meter and adjust to 28-30 degrees.

With a feeler gauge set them to .013 - .019. GM engines with points have the benefit of being able to set the points with a dwell gauge with the car running. That's what the trap door is in the distributor cap, access to an allen set screw. Setting with a dwell is much more accurate.

Thanks alot!! seems that my guess of .017 with a feeler guage was a good start until i get a dwell meter.

Generally points right out of the box will be close enough to get the car running. Once you are ready to dial it in closely, a dwell meter/tach combo is a fairly inexpensive piece.

You really don't need a dwell meter or feeler gauge to adjust the GM style externally adjustable point. Here's how my dad showed me to do it many years ago:

Start the car up and let it idle. Then use a screwdriver or allen wrench and slowly start turning the adjustment screw in. Continue until the engine starts to misfire. At that point the engine may die, if so don't worry about it. Then turn the adjustment screw out exactly 1/2 turn and your points will be set.

Then you can go out and buy that tach/dwell meter and see that you will be right close to the 30 degree desired dwell setting.;)
