will 342 gears fit on a 410 carrier?
 

got a 12 bolt in my 69 gto. want to change the gears to 342, or 355. will they fit this carrier? thanks, mike.

Probably not unless you have a ring gear spacer now or have a 3 series gear. The factory used a 2 3 and 4 series carrier, basically in the obvious range as stated. If your carrier casting is 30140 yes, 30174 no. I believe there is a 3.90 gearset made for a 4 series carrier.

There is a "thin" 3.73 that is made for a 4 series carrier. Maybe also a 3.90, I haven't looked.

This is what I did with my 12 bolt. I had put a 4-series spool in the rearend with 4.10 pro gears. After changing direction with what I planned on doing with the car, the best solution was to buy the 3.73 gears for a 4-series carrier.

Seriously what I meant to say was that when everyone else said I couldn't do it, Tom's had a spacer and saved me a fortune.

Spacers have been around forever and most people know about them, no secret there. Spacers are generally frowned upon in the trade. The ring gear bolts are in double shear and depending on the carrier, the width of the ring gear piloting diameter is marginal with a spacer to properly center the ring gear on the carrier.
