Wanted: 3.23 to 3.55 posi for 1968 GTO

I presently have a '68 GTO with a 400 and a 2.76 posi 10 bolt (posi not always works). I am in the process of building a fairly strong 455 and I want to upgrade to either a 3.23-3.55 gear. I was told by a drive train rebuilder the parts to rebuild the rear are no longer available and the adapter to go from a 2- series rear end to a 3- series rear end makes the already weak (he said the 8.2 rear end is one of the weakest GM makes) even weaker.

Any ideas? Is this guy right? Anyone have a good posi they want to sell? I could do a partial trade for parts (I have bare cast #13 heads, armasteel crank, new-in-box (NIB)Autometer 6809, NIB Torquer II, nice original Torquer, 850 Holley DP, etc. to trade or I can buy outright.

Thanks for the use of this great site.

Tony

hmm, thats odd because I just bought a complete Yukon Gear rebuild kit. Also bought a brand new Eaton posi and Richmond 3.90 gears. I plan on getting the axle assembly (69 GTO 8.2) out of storage this weekend and begin the rebuild process.

Strength of the 8.2 10 bolt

AND as for the guy saying that it is one of the weakest rear GM everproduces is TOTALLY nonsense...lol. I can name a ton more weak than that rear...lol.
The pontiac 8.2 has bolt in axles making it very safe if something were to go wrong inside the diff. The axle shaft will stay intact in the housing not to ruin the rear 1/4 of the vehicle.

For the street most rears all the way to the 7.5 will do the job just fine AS LONG as maintenance is kept up...Most unfortunately are 30+ year old containing the same fluid from 1960...lol. JUST not fair to evaluate or compare rear that are not in tip top shape form the beginning. :) anY NEW DIFF WILL WORK LONGER AND BETTER THAN A 40 YEAR OLD out of spec low on fluid diff no matter the size. Jim

Hope some of this info helps
