Need help with fuel pump
 

Alright, here is my dilema. My '66 Tempest has a chevy 350 in it. It was running rough, so I decided to change the fuel pump. The fuel pump rod was stuck down and I tapped it back up with a hammer. I installed the new pump, but the carb is getting no fuel.

It appears that the fuel pump rod is not going up and down.

Did I ruin the Cam Eccentric or possibly the motor?

Would it be better just to go with an electric fuel pump? Thanks

Also, the casting number on the motor is 3970014

It is a 1970 truck engine, maybe a C-30

This may seem pretty OBVIOUS,but did you make sure that you have enough gas in the tank? As I recall,if you disconnect the fuel line from the pump,you SHOULD have gas running out.

If you DO have fuel there,double check to make sure that the pushrod didn't drop before you installed the pump.

A vaccum gauge/fuelpump tester can be used to measure pump output pressure (if you know the arm is working)

Thanks for the reply. I think I found the problem. The fuel pump pushrod was bent, so it wasn't hitting the fuel pump. Instead, it was getting stuck up in the hole. I bought a new push rod and I will try it this weekend. If it doesn't work, then I'll get an electric fuel pump

on the front side of the block, between the timing cover and the fuel pump, u will find a bolt with a 9/16 head, if u remove that bolt, u can put something in there to hold fuel pump rod in up postion while installing fuel pump. use a screw driver or something of that nature to hold rod up through hole. But remember to reinstall bolt after or u will have an oil leak.

if you are replacing the pump rod all you have to do to hold it up in place is to put some heavy grease (wheel bearing) on the end of it that goes aganist the cam and that will hold it up in place while you install the pump. When I install a pump I like to get the bolts started and then you can push on the pump and rock it up and down to check to see if the pump is working

Did you make sure you have the fuel line coming in from the tank and the line going from the pump to the carb right? Make sure they are not switched around. We did that on accident while installing my new pump and did not realize on the bottom of it said "In" "Out" If it is like this you would not get any fuel it would just drive it back into the tank.

Well, I successfully installed the new fuel pump pushrod that I bought from Autozone for 5 bucks and it runs great. I held up the rod in place using wheel grease, just like you guys said.

glad to hear you have it fixed. there is another way of holding the rod in place but if your removing the plate and rod then the grease is the easyist way to do it
