VOE with R.A.R.E. oversized HO manifolds?
I'm planning exhaust solutions for my project 1970 GTO.
I was thinking about getting the Waldron VOE, but I think the mufflers are 2 1/4" which doesn't jive with my 2 1/2" oversized R.A.R.E. HO manifolds. How can you make this combo work? Has anyone run into this issue? Thanks, Matt |
Call Waldron Exhaust and talk to Joe Tontiello. He's the "Pontiac VOE guy" there. I met him at this year's GTOAA convention, where he displayed and demonstrated his GTO with the reproduction VOE system. I'm sure he'll have some suggestions for you. If needed, I could e-mail you a phone# for Joe.

Matt, use the flowmaster reducer tubes at the mufflers. I had them on my 3" x 2.5" system.

Matt,
As Jack said, have Joe make them for you with 2.5" in and 2.25" out. He can do it. It will work fine with 2.5" manifolds. Or if you want the stock size for later usage, Larry's idea is good. Tom |
Jack, Larry, and Tom:
Thank you all for your suggestions. It sounds like I should talk to Joe. Tom, thanks for all your hard work on this project. I think this is a really cool idea and if money permits, I'd like a set on my car. In your opinion, can the VOE mufflers be made with 2.5" In and Out? If that is not possible, do you feel that 2.25" Out hurts performance any? It seems like I remember this not being a huge issue on performance. |
IMO, if money is an issue, you can't beat the reducer solution to solve your problem.
|
Larry, money is always an issue. However, I spent a pretty penny on the ceramic coated R.A.R.E. oversized manifolds, and the VOE setup is just under $1,000.. saving a little on a system like this seems a penny wise and a pound foolish.
I'll be surprised if I don't have close to $2K in the exhaust alone by the time it's done. I'd really like to keep the 2.5" setup, at least to the mufflers. It seems like I read somewhere (Maybe Jim's book) that reducing after the mufflers doesn't really hurt much at all. |

Keep the 2.5" system; nothing wrong with that at all. Use the reducers just in front of the 2.25" mufflers and the 2.25" tailpipes on the outlets. Jim is correct on the smaller tailpipe senario and his testing pretty much proves that. Spending $2K on the exhaust? Can't you buy just the VOE mufflers without the system.? |
Ask Joe to make them with 2.25" outlets and the true 2.5" inlet pipe. I think he can do that 78 Ghost. Should not be too much more, if any.

they list the DCE muffler in 2 1/2" in and out. why not use that with your aftermarket exhaust? add a factory style control unit, best of both worlds. |
I did what Larry stated and it worked fine.

ok, i've been looking for a while. no, not since my last post. very near the bottom of the page they list part # VOE-2A. this is a 2.50 inlet and outlet muffler for a 70-72 GTO. |

very interested in this.i have a 72 lemans/gto that will have a +.030 455-ported 197 HO heads-comp XE288HR cam-2.5ram air manifolds.was thinking(i know dangerous)that the mufflers would be okay just cruising around and open them up when wanting more performance.just wondered how they would do with about 525hp and 575lbs torque?
|
Thanks everyone for all the replies. I think the solution I'll go with is to have the mufflers made in 2.5" IN and 2.25" OUT, so I don't feel like I'm losing anything upstream of the mufflers.
I know the money sounds like a lot, but the DCE system is about a grand, the R.A.R.E. manifolds coated were probably well north of $500, then the remainder of the system is going to eat up at least $500. That is going to be one expensive set of pipes. The cool thing is the R.A.R.E. manifolds look great, and so far the ceramic isn't wearing off at all. |
71 Warbird, they will cost HP as compared to good straight through mufflers but compared to chambered mufflers, it will be basically a wash when they are open. But, you are already giving up some HP for the manifolds as compared to headers anyway so I would not get too overly concerned. :):)
They will be really loud on that engine when opened and should be very quiet when closed..the big 455s really crackle when open. :) Tom |
thank you Tom.i ended up with a pair of hooker supercomps pretty cheap,so i may run them for awhile, then go to the 2.5 ram air manifolds.

We have different internal tube diameters for higher-output applications. Send me an email or call me at the shop (800) 503-9428 to discuss the application. Since every system is built to order, we can pretty much make whatever you need. Inlets and outlets are available up to 3". We've built several 2.5" systems for connection to 2.5" RA manifolds. I'd recommend at least 2.5" inlets and tailpipes for your 455, with the "oversize" internal tubes. They will sound like turbo mufflers in quiet mode. Open = loud. :D Joe Tonietto |

Thank you Joe.i will be in contact later for a system, seems like just the ticket. Joe |
Oh, man, I sure mangled your name Joe! So much for my "memory like a steel trap"...
